The integrated LAN works well, once setup (moderately tiring), the integrated sound is acceptable if you use external speakers, once setup (fairly difficult). The graphics cause various problems with kernels using the nVidia drivers, though not with the nv driver. Both are easy to setup. However, the graphics drivers are perfectly acceptable for watching DVD's with either driver. If you plan to do anythng requiring a large amount of fps, I would suggest you look for a board with the nforce2 or nforce3 chipset. This board also has issues with more than one drive per ide. One combo drive (cdrw/dvd), one HD, no need to play graphics intensive games, then this is the board for you. I've had to remove the optical drive to get access to a 2nd HD at times. If you want to put more than 1 HD on your system, along with an optical drive, and you want 3D capabilities, this is not the board for you. So far no problems, installation showed no difficulties except for the keyboard: After the boot loader prompt it was "lost". Workaround: Select option: 6. Escape to loader prompt then enter: set hint.atkbd.0.flags="0x2" and boot: boot To make this persistent you must set this value in /boot/device.hints later on. Besides this minor issue, everything went smooth for us. I guess 4.9 will work on it as well, it does for Dell's 1750. Not being a kernel debugging guru, it's been slow. Turns out when pci_alloc_resource issues a call to resource_list_alloc (kern/subr_bus.c), it calls resource_list_find, which fails (returns null). The call is for a type of 04 (SYS_RES_IOPORT) and an rid of 0x10 (PCI_CBIO). Instead of adding the resource when it is not found in the list, the call fails and the device is effectively disabled. Interestingly, this has the side effect (somehow) of preventing at least one other network driver from working in my case, although ifconfig shows them functioning. Not sure why this is so; removing the card allows the other cards to function properly. My question is, what is the design philosophy regarding calls to resource_list_find from resource_list_alloc? When should resource_list_add be called? Should it have been called at some prior point to set up all the resources a driver will be using? Is there a particular driver I can look at to see how things *should* be coded? I know the cards work, and have worked under freebsd. I had one working with an eth0 serial device installed for a leased line. That device came out when I switched to dsl. I suspect that the eth0 driver somehow added the resources to the list properly, so that when the de driver went to allocate some more for itself, the find actually found something. The chipsets in question are: Intel 865G, 865PG, 865PE. I did some searching on the mailing lists earlier and found a couple of posts detailing problems between the 865G chipset and FreeBSD 5.1. I am working on the assumption that the motherboard manufacturer isn't too important, but I am expecting to buy from Gigabyte as they've worked fine in the past. Can anyone shed any light on whether these chipsets will work with FreeBSD 4.9? Should I use Vinum to acheive the Raid 5 bit, or whats this new Geom thin= gy, also I would prefer a RAID adapter card providing they are cheap enough (because the performance is better in hardware, isnt it?) ? Also what is the support for SATA like, Ideally I would like to have SATA= Hard Disks. I had consulted the HCL for FreeBSD 5.2.1 but it seems incomplete = as it doesnt list the Intel ICH5 SATA controller yet I know this works fine! I own a Promise FastTrak S150 SX4 myself and i have killed my old raid5 array some days ago. i now use 4x 120gb as raid 0+1 with ataraid. It's sad, that Promise still advertises his FastTrak SX4 with future FreeBSD support. I spoke with an technician of Promise on Cebit 04. It's highly unlikely that Promise itself will release any bsd drivers. They have a linux-driver. I received a copy of it, too. Regrettably the Promise driver is only partly open-source. I provided Soeren with one copy, but he said it doesn't help him, as the relevant parts of the code are closed... so, at the moment i'm running CURRENT with raid 0+1 on my Promise SX4 till ataraid will handle raid5. Looking forward to that. It depends on what features you're expecting to work. For the most part, everything works with the exception of most ICH5 SATA RAID implementations (for now). I think you're going to find more opinions about various motherboards and onboard peripherals then you would about the chipsets proper. > The chipsets in question are: Intel 865G, 865PG, 865PE. 865G means built in video 865P(E) means discreet video (you add your own) 865PG doesn't exist as far as I know as the G means built in video and the P means no built in video - not possible to have both in one chip. > I did some searching on the mailing lists earlier and found a couple of > posts detailing problems between the 865G chipset and FreeBSD 5.1. Probably X related as the G specifies the onboard video. Taking a stab in the dark at it, you'd want to check X compatibility here unless you're planning on adding an AGP card of your own. In which case, do not buy an 865G based board. > I am working on the assumption that the motherboard manufacturer isn't > too important, but I am expecting to buy from Gigabyte as they've worked > fine in the past. I prefer the Intel boards myself, just because they tend to be more consistent and stable, but I'm sure someone here would disagree. =) -Sam From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Sat May 22 10:00:41 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1365D16A5E7 for ; Sat, 22 May 2004 10:00:41 -0700 (PDT) Received: from dd2626.kasserver.com (dd2626.kasserver.com [81.209.184.189]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7EC7743D49 for ; Sat, 22 May 2004 10:00:40 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from outi@bytephobia.de) Received: from duality.bytephobia.de (pD9E4B45B.dip.t-dialin.net [217.228.180.91]) by dd2626.kasserver.com (Postfix) with SMTP id F118B5CC03; Sat, 22 May 2004 19:00:09 +0200 (CEST) Date: Sat, 22 May 2004 19:00:09 +0200 From: Patrick Hurrelmann To: adam@otterycomputers.com, freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Message-Id: <20040522190009.33d110a5@duality.bytephobia.de> In-Reply-To: <1085158935.40ae36176ba6c@oocltd.gotdns.org> References: <003301c43f36$a78c7340$0b02a8c0@justin> <40AE18E8.90302@outi.echsi.de> <40AE1A29.8080300@outi.echsi.de> <1085153225.40ae1fc973ff9@192.168.0.253> <40AE2906.20304@bytephobia.de> <1085158935.40ae36176ba6c@oocltd.gotdns.org> Organization: private X-Mailer: Sylpheed version 0.9.10claws (GTK+ 1.2.10; i386-portbld-freebsd5.2) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Subject: Re: RAID 5 Adapters and FreeBSD 5.2.1 X-BeenThere: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: outi@bytephobia.de List-Id: General discussion of FreeBSD hardware List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 22 May 2004 17:00:41 -0000 hi again, thats quite funny :) i spoke to mr. zegers at cebit and had some mail-exchange afterwards. i tho= ught i did explain him, taht freebsd is no linux and that is wont run any l= inux-kerneldrivers. and that i don't thinbks its true that some linux-guy p= orted this to freebsd. hm ;) as already said, we'll have to wait till ataraid handles raid 5 or promise = builds freebsd-drivers what never will happen (in my opinion)... promise europe says: take linux-drivers, port them because efforts for free= bsd drivers have been stoppen, because some developper quit... promise usa says: we're working on it... hehe since almost one year? very funny is that they still do advertising with freebsd-drivers :) if you have a close look at promise' marketing presentations, especially at= comparision to other raid-controller, you will notice that they use some v= ery recent firmware revision (2.07 or something like that) while the most a= ctual firmware is 2.04. same thing with windows drivers used in benchmark ;= ) and that presentation are out some month now. i own several promise controllers now, but support is getting worse... mayb= e these were my last. I need a 802.11(prefarably g but b is ok) PCI NIC for my FreeBSD server to bridge to an ethernet network and a cable modem. What did you end up getting (just interested in what you got for the FreeBSD server)? Were you sucessful? (This is directed at anyone in a similar situation) >I have a quick question for you guys.
