All worked well enough to install FreeBSD 5.1 with the gymnastics described here: http://imlpld1.berkeley.edu/~bob/FreeBSD/ On booting the 5.2.1-RC floppies (fdformatted first, all md5 sums are correct) written on the boot drive the usual prompts are presented and the loader prompt invites device.hints: those are set hint.aha.0.disabled=0 set hint.ed.0.disabled=0 set hint.ed.0.port=0x300 set hint.ed.0.irq=5 The changes are reflected (and unaffected by double quotes) in the "show" command, but a "boot" command does not probe aha0 nor ed0, ending with the: mountroot> prompt which accepts ufs:md0a as a reply. /stand/sysintall starts up, with a flock of errors related to failed module loads and an invitation to use the driver floppy. The sysinstall Main Menu comes up, but with no disks nor ethernet adapters found it's a fruitless venture. >How-To-Repeat: Try to reinstall again. >Fix: None at this time. >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Feb 9 09:30:21 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AA83016A4D1 for ; Mon, 9 Feb 2004 09:30:21 -0800 (PST) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 90C6B43D39 for ; Mon, 9 Feb 2004 09:30:21 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) i19HULbv070171 for ; Mon, 9 Feb 2004 09:30:21 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.10/8.12.10/Submit) id i19HUL13070170; Mon, 9 Feb 2004 09:30:21 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Mon, 9 Feb 2004 09:30:21 -0800 (PST) Resent-Message-Id: <200402091730.i19HUL13070170@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, Radim Kolar Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 40A0B16A4D0 for ; Mon, 9 Feb 2004 09:21:41 -0800 (PST) Received: from mail.tiscali.cz (stateless3.tiscali.cz [213.235.135.72]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DA45C43D1D for ; Mon, 9 Feb 2004 09:21:40 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from hsn@netmag.cz) Received: from asura.bsd (212.11.96.14) by mail.tiscali.cz (6.7.018) id 3FB969350158D24D for FreeBSD-gnats-submit@freebsd.org; Mon, 9 Feb 2004 18:21:38 +0100 Received: from hsn@localhost by asura.bsd (Exim 4.24_4 FreeBSD) id 1ApuXc-0000xL-Bu for ; Sun, 08 Feb 2004 20:24:28 +0100 Message-Id: Date: Sun, 08 Feb 2004 20:24:28 +0100 From: Radim Kolar To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: 3.113 Subject: i386/62595: npx.c do not compiles without ISA bus configured X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: Radim Kolar List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 09 Feb 2004 17:30:21 -0000 >Number: 62595 >Category: i386 >Synopsis: npx.c do not compiles without ISA bus configured >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: medium >Responsible: freebsd-i386 >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: sw-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Mon Feb 09 09:30:21 PST 2004 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Radim Kolar >Release: FreeBSD 5.2-RELEASE-p2 i386 >Organization: Sanatana Dharma >Environment: System: FreeBSD asura.bsd 5.2-RELEASE-p2 FreeBSD 5.2-RELEASE-p2 #2: Sun Feb 8 16:07:05 CET 2004 root@asura.bsd:/usr/src/sys/i386/compile/GENERIC i386 >Description: If you don't have 'device isa' entry in kernel configuration, kernel build will fail in npx driver. The NPX_ISA ifdefs in npx.c basically leave out isa-pnp, not isa, and some i386 kernels configured without isa can only be linked because not configuring it doesn't actually leave out all the isa bits. %%% Index: npx.c =================================================================== RCS file: /home/ncvs/src/sys/i386/isa/npx.c,v retrieving revision 1.144 diff -u -2 -r1.144 npx.c --- npx.c 3 Nov 2003 21:53:38 -0000 1.144 +++ npx.c 10 Feb 2004 01:30:35 -0000 @@ -1038,5 +1038,4 @@ static devclass_t npx_devclass; -#ifdef DEV_ISA /* * We prefer to attach to the root nexus so that the usual case (exception 16) @@ -1045,4 +1044,5 @@ DRIVER_MODULE(npx, nexus, npx_driver, npx_devclass, 0, 0); +#ifdef DEV_ISA /* * This sucks up the legacy ISA support assignments from PNPBIOS/ACPI. %%% Bruce From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Feb 10 08:44:43 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A1FA916A4CE; Tue, 10 Feb 2004 08:44:43 -0800 (PST) Received: from sccrmhc11.comcast.net (sccrmhc11.comcast.net [204.127.202.55]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 590D343D1D; Tue, 10 Feb 2004 08:44:43 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from RonDzierwa@comcast.net) Received: from comcast.net (esx132dhcp439.essex01.md.comcast.net[68.33.133.183]) by comcast.net (sccrmhc11) with SMTP id <2004021016444201100t8s7qe> (Authid: rondzierwa); Tue, 10 Feb 2004 16:44:42 +0000 Message-ID: <40290A81.E5C4EB26@comcast.net> Date: Tue, 10 Feb 2004 11:44:49 -0500 From: Ron Dzierwa Organization: Innovative Engineering, Inc. I saw the usb keyboard problem and that you were listed as the responsible person, so i thought i could send this description to you in hopes of learning some more about the state of the usb in 5.2. I am developing a kernel driver for the Cypress ezusb-fx2 chip. In order to set up a development environment, i tried to connect the prototype board to the system and use the ugen driver and ezdownload to load a version of test firmware just to see the basics work. I am using an old DFI K6 mobo with a VIA chipset. This whole rig works under 4.9 with no problem, but when i boot into 5.2 and try it i get the following: uhci0: port 0xc400-0xc41f irq 10 at device 7.2 on pci0 usb0: on uhci0 usb0: USB revision 1.0 uhub0: VIA UHCI root hub, class 9/0, rev 1.00/1.00, addr 1 uhub0: 2 ports with 2 removable, self powered ugen0: Cypress Semiconductor product 0x0081, rev 2.00/0.01, addr 2 ums0: Kensington Kensington USB/PS2 Trackball, rev 1.10/1.00, addr 3, iclass 3/1 ums0: 5 buttons and Z dir. all seems as it should be... I have written linux and windoze drivers for the same hardware, and have always been able to use the default interface that is set up when the chip first enumerates. So, I modified ezdownload to allow you to specify a flag that indicates that it should not set the interface, but just get on with the download. When i run it, the application hangs. (not the system, luckily, just the application), and it won't die when kill'ed. I can provide dmesg outputs for these problems if desired. If I remove the mouse, the system notices that its gone, then when i plug it back in, the system outputs volumes of dmesg at intervals of several seconds, but it never seems to be able to reconnect the mouse, since the /dev/ums0 device never re-appears. A similar problem happens with the Cypress device. This same system with the same devices works fine under 4.9. Are these problems that are already known about and are being worked on? If not, perhaps i could help in fixing them. I've done kernel and device development on various versions of unix over the last 15 years, so i feel comfortable helping out. I thought it best, though, to see what the state of things were and to see if anybody was already working on these issues before just diving in. any information you can give would be greatly appreciated. thanks, ron. From: Murray Baker To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: i386/62382: 'wi' driver Netgear MA311 (PCI) Prism 2.5, VIA Apollo chipset mobo, 'wi' crash during boot Date: Thu, 12 Feb 2004 00:06:57 +1100 I have diagnosed and solved the problem. PCI 2.1 mobo does not supply 3.3V power reqd by MA311. (3.3V power mandatory on PCI 2.2 mobo, optional on PCI 2.1.) Sufficient power was supplied by parasitic paths to get the MA311 partially working. I successfully ran the firmware upgrade flasher on this mobo. Confusing! MA311 is now in another mobo which does supply 3.3V power and I have had the WLAN working. FreeBSD 4.9-REL at both ends. Murray Baker. EXPECTED: Both a prompt to insert the second CD, and error checking to verify that the correct CD had been inserted before the installer attempted to use it. >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Feb 11 16:40:08 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C5EDD16A4CE for ; Wed, 11 Feb 2004 16:40:08 -0800 (PST) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 921F843D1D for ; Wed, 11 Feb 2004 16:40:08 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) i1C0e8bv065314 for ; Wed, 11 Feb 2004 16:40:08 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.10/8.12.10/Submit) id i1C0e8SO065313; Wed, 11 Feb 2004 16:40:08 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Wed, 11 Feb 2004 16:40:08 -0800 (PST) Resent-Message-Id: <200402120040.i1C0e8SO065313@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, abc@ai1.anchorage.mtaonline.net Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B05E316A4CE for ; Wed, 11 Feb 2004 16:39:07 -0800 (PST) Received: from ai1.anchorage.mtaonline.net (ai1.anchorage.mtaonline.net [12.21.201.252]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7AFB443D1D for ; Wed, 11 Feb 2004 16:39:06 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from abc@ai1.anchorage.mtaonline.net) Received: from en26.ai1.anchorage.mtaonline.net (root@printer [192.168.0.26]) i1C0d1LR089453 for ; Wed, 11 Feb 2004 15:39:01 -0900 (AKST) (envelope-from abc@ai1.anchorage.mtaonline.net) Received: (from abc@localhost)i1C0e8Vn032324; Thu, 12 Feb 2004 00:40:08 GMT (envelope-from abc@ai1.anchorage.mtaonline.net) Message-Id: <200402120040.i1C0e8Vn032324@en26.ai1.anchorage.mtaonline.net> Date: Thu, 12 Feb 2004 00:40:08 GMT From: abc@ai1.anchorage.mtaonline.net To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org Subject: i386/62717: ATA or similar read bug.
