We are using 4 nos of DAX 5016 switches with 16 ports .There are about 50 clients. All client machines have linux installed in them .Our network is using cat5 cables and has 100Mbps bandwidth.the server is having about 80 users accounts and their homes in it.The home is mounted using NFS. The problem is: During shift change when there is login from most of the machines ,the network hangs. The problem mainly occurs when users login to NIS server at shift change. The network is slow at that time.It takes 10 minutes to login. When we type a command (eg.#ls), result of the command takes 1 min to display. There is delay when we move from one tab to another tab of any browser(mozilla or opera). But the problem stops in about 30 to 45 min.(when every one has logged in).During this time the server load is 0.05,0.03,0.00 . When I check the logs there are 2 messages ypserve[115]:res_mkquery failed ypserve[115]:DNS query failed In the client[LINUX machines] the error is RPC:sendmsg returned error 22 lockd:RPC call returned error 22 We have recrimped the network replaced all switches ,but the problem has not been solved.I think it is the problem i\of NIS or NFS. what could cause this problem and how could I fix it? ---------------------------- Santosh >How-To-Repeat: >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Sep 12 22:22:44 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3BBBC16A4CE; Sun, 12 Sep 2004 22:22:44 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1FD0A43D31; Sun, 12 Sep 2004 22:22:44 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from linimon@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (linimon@localhost [127.0.0.1]) i8CMMilL041832; Sun, 12 Sep 2004 22:22:44 GMT (envelope-from linimon@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from linimon@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id i8CMMhKq041828; Sun, 12 Sep 2004 22:22:43 GMT (envelope-from linimon) Date: Sun, 12 Sep 2004 22:22:43 GMT From: Mark Linimon Message-Id: <200409122222.i8CMMhKq041828@freefall.freebsd.org> To: linimon@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: kern/60984: [nfs] NFS Server hang X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 12 Sep 2004 22:22:44 -0000 Synopsis: [nfs] NFS Server hang Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-i386->freebsd-bugs Responsible-Changed-By: linimon Responsible-Changed-When: Sun Sep 12 22:22:26 GMT 2004 Responsible-Changed-Why: This does not sound i386-specific. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=60984 From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Sep 13 11:02:14 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3061616A4CE for ; Mon, 13 Sep 2004 11:02:14 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0A60943D3F for ; Mon, 13 Sep 2004 11:02:14 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (peter@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id i8DB2EGj048768 for ; Mon, 13 Sep 2004 11:02:14 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: (from peter@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id i8DB2D6P048761 for freebsd-i386@freebsd.org; Mon, 13 Sep 2004 11:02:13 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Date: Mon, 13 Sep 2004 11:02:13 GMT Message-Id: <200409131102.i8DB2D6P048761@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: peter set sender to owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org Subject: Current problem reports assigned to you X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 13 Sep 2004 11:02:14 -0000 Current FreeBSD problem reports Critical problems S Submitted Tracker Resp. Mostly the cause of the problems was not keeping the kdb_pcb and the trap frame for the current thread in sync for the instruction pointer. Another problem was that gdb_rx_varhex assumes hex strings are for big endian architecture. This causes the val argument for gdb_cpu_setreg to be in network order. To keep the patch small gdb_cpu_setreg now uses __bswap32() to convert the value locally. Kgdb was not able to read some registers since they are not in the pcb. However for the important exception of the stopped thread important registers can be read for the trap frame. Please see the patch for details. Disclaimer: This is not a pretty patch and only meant as a temporary fix until a better solution is committed. >How-To-Repeat: Try using breakpoints in ddb or kgdb. With an similiar installation I was unable to reproduce your issue, did you marked two "bootable" partition during FreeBSD installation (say, two "A"s during you are creating the FreeBSD partition)? More technically: I have heard some complaints that when installing FreeBSD on a multi-boot configuration and mark two "bootable" partitions then system will go unbootable. This is because that the "bootable" flag is actually "activate" flags on partitions, which is only allowed on one partition or the partition table would be considered to be invalid. With a safebelt introduced in src/usr.sbin/sysinstall/disks.c,v 1.153 it's more likely that users wouldn't set two "active" partition at the same time, so if this was your problem, then we would likely to have an improved sysinstall(8) that won't cause an unbootable system. Please let me know if this is the issue so we can take more action on it, and thanks for supporting the release engineering of the upcoming 5.3-RELEASE! It just seems dead. The microfone device is actually alive hardware-wise, as there is a windows partition on this box, and that works. pcm0: port 0xee80-0xeebf,0xe800-0xe8ff mem 0xfebfb400-0xfebfb4ff,0xfebfb800-0xfebfb9ff irq 17 at device 31.5 on pci0 pcm0: [GIANT-LOCKED] pcm0: 'mixer' settings are fine, (rec,mic,etc..) all at ~75, and recording source is 'mic'. I have two inputs, line-in and mic, and i've tried both (obviously setting 'line' to a ~75 mark, too.) I've checked some archives, and a few others with similar setups have this problem. I found one with a mention of a patch, of which i added the diffed code to ac97.c to take advantage of the mentioned 20dB gain increase, but still no luck .. Mines a Cobalt XTR. It's an x86 Platform mines (1Ghz Intel PIII (coppermine, dual capable). Currently there are no BSD Platforms which will install on it. You can however install Linux Platforms, such RedHat/Slack/Gen ect ect. after you flash the BIOS with an after market Flash available from Sourceforge http://sourceforge.net/projects/cobalt-rom . The current problem at had with all of the Cobalt systems is that there is no Standard bios for it, allowing load from a MBR. Even though the ROM data from Sun and from Sourceforge is all open source. For those of you that don't understand why you can't just pop in a CD disto of BSD or Net Boot, its because the systems have the kernal in Flash. Using a kernal to load rather then a normal Bios. Makes things a pain. If you want to update the kernal you have to update the flash. Does anybody out there know of anything new? A way to do it? I've read a lot of posts, on server after server of just ideas. I've tried a few with no luck. Any info of real justice on this issue would be great, to help a lot of people bring them back out of the closet. (On a smaller note, Cobalt was bought out by Sun Microsystems (then dropped them), Symantec also used Cobalt XTR's for Internet Appliences, under the name Velociraptor 1300, if that helps.)
