It hangs seldomly. If I check the server, it has message like following rl1: discard oversize frame (ether type 61a6 flags 3 len 22786 > max 1514) I guess it's the problem from rl adapter's code of FreeBSD. Because, I didn't have any problem when I use the server hardware on other OS. And, beside, I might be wrong, I don't think there is ether type of 61a6. It seems that the code got the packet wrong in the middle of some other packet. I searched through Google and many other forums, but couldn't find the answer. >How-To-Repeat: Maybe you can repeat this problem by dhclient-ing from above client's network configuration to the FreeBSD DHCP server from above. Worked fine no problems with sk driver. Today I can upload at a good rate (30 mb in less than a minute over FE.) I can not download. The faster the connection, the less I get. FE (100mb/s) gets me about 90kb downloaded. Sometimes reboots (panics) the system. 768 kb/s DSL gets me around 2 to 3 megs before the connections stalls so bad it fails. With tftp I could download a 30 mb file in 10 to 15 minutes that failed after 5 hours of "fetch." I added a rl0 driver/card to get reliable network access for now. >How-To-Repeat: Get an Asus motherboard with an onboard 3C940 gig ethernet chip and install 5.3 stable. >Fix: March 2004 SK driver does not seem to have any issues. OpenBSD: if_sk.c,v 2.33 2003/08/12 version seems to have issues causing buffer overruns? I assume that is the reason for the Corrupt MAC on input error? >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Dec 14 06:50:29 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9826716A4CE for ; Tue, 14 Dec 2004 06:50:29 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8258B43D53 for ; Tue, 14 Dec 2004 06:50:29 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id iBE6oTxw054301 for ; Tue, 14 Dec 2004 06:50:29 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id iBE6oTJM054300; Tue, 14 Dec 2004 06:50:29 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Tue, 14 Dec 2004 06:50:29 GMT Message-Id: <200412140650.iBE6oTJM054300@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org From: "Keith Kelly" Subject: Re: i386/61890: [fdisk] FDisk uses incorrect calculations for disk geometry gues X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: Keith Kelly List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 14 Dec 2004 06:50:29 -0000 The following reply was made to PR i386/61890; it has been noted by GNATS. Imagine that -- sticking your head in the sand and pretending a problem doesn't exist doesn't actually fix anything! Amazing! I dumped FreeBSD in favor of adding more file storage space to my existing Windows XP system, and haven't looked back. - Keith F. Hi there,

Yes it is extremely frustrating because I’m a big fan of FreeBSD. =

I can install FreeBSD = with weird disk geometry, but it makes FreeBSD really = unstable:

like doing a cvsup and = the computer shuts down without any = warning/logs/reason.

My hardware may be = cheap, but it’s not rare at all.

MSI 845GVM-V with = Intel Celeron 2.0ghz, 80G WD Hard disk (WD800JB).

I wonder why the = FreeBSD team is taking so long to fix such a serious problem, because it IS A VERY = SERIOUS problem.

You can install = FreeBSD with whatever disk geometry Fdisk thinks is good, and end up having unusual = problems and bugs,

and make FreeBSD an = non-stable OS.

After Googled this = problem up, I see a lot of people having this problem, and others that probably = have it but don’t even know about it except = that

their FreeBSD system = is not stable at all. I can see someone in 1999 reporting this bug. = What’s up with that?

Please fix this up. If = you want people to have FreeBSD, it must install itself = correctly!

The bug is triggered by a PCI EXPRESS DMA Controller on soda's motherboard. It has a bad resource, which is (properly) disabled. However, FreeBSD (improperly) enables it without checking that the resource is a happy one, causing physical page 0 to go to lala land, vm86 mode to screw up, keyboard not be initialized and a complete hang on boot right in the middle of keyboard initialization. You can also prevent any resource from being enabled by means of setting hw.pci.enable_io_modes to 0 before booting the kernel. Note that due to an unrelated bug (discussed elsewhere), an UP kernel will not boot on soda. - Vadim --LyciRD1jyfeSSjG0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Description: pci.c.diff Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="pci.c.diff" --- /usr/src/sys/dev/pci/pci.c.vsave Tue Dec 14 21:39:20 2004 +++ /usr/src/sys/dev/pci/pci.c Tue Dec 14 18:56:00 2004 @@ -688,6 +688,7 @@ cfg->mfdev); printf("\tcmdreg=0x%04x, statreg=0x%04x, cachelnsz=%d (dwords)\n", cfg->cmdreg, cfg->statreg, cfg->cachelnsz); + printf("\tlattimer=0x%02x (%d ns), mingnt=0x%02x (%d ns), maxlat=0x%02x (%d ns)\n", cfg->lattimer, cfg->lattimer * 30, cfg->mingnt, cfg->mingnt * 250, cfg->maxlat, cfg->maxlat * 250); @@ -792,6 +793,16 @@ } /* + * If base is 0 or is all 1s, then we have problems.
