Eventually, system panics. Tried only 1 drive on a cable (IDE controller), it;s actually worse, also get READ-DMA errors, UDMA ICRC errors, etc. Both drives on one IDE cable (Master/Slave) runs for around an hour before panic. I see lots and lots of other people with similar problems. Apparently, many of them run fine with FreeBSD 4. I do not have a 4 box. I tried numerous permutations of BIOS settings to no avail. Only solution is hw.ata.ata_dma="0" to disable DMA. This hardware worked fine on an ASUS A7V133 motherboard running 5.2.1, and, when updated motherboard to a ASUS A7V600-X, problems occurred. Thinking it might be hardware (motherboard), went to a A7V880. Same issues. I thought my laptop doesn't support el-torito standard, so I downloaded Free BSD 5.3 and in fact it passes that point. when I get to the 'Welcome to FreeBSD' black screen I click on enter for the 'default' option and it goes: /boot/kernel/acpi.ko text=0x3fbfc data=0x1c04+0x112c syms=[0x4+0x72f0+0x4+0x97c7] Then the cursor keeps blinking and after 1 minute the system powers off! If I choose boot without ACPI it waits a minute and it powers off again! I'm lost. Do you know why it's happening? Thanks for any help I might get. Again, xl1 and xl2 can be brought back to= =20 life by doing ifconfig xl{1,2} down and ifconfig xl{1,2} up. =46rom this I guess that the problem is not related to fxp or xl drivers, b= ut to=20 the kernel interrupt management system. It seems that on SMP systems IRQ=20 sharing may cause some of the interrupts to be lost. I am building on my Pentium 3, though that doesn't seem to have anything to do with the issue. I've used different combinations of CPUTYPE=i486, CPUTYPE?=i486, NO_CPU_CFLAGS=true, and NO_CPU_COPTFLAGS all with the same result. The kernel panics at cpuid in the random_ident_hardware function in /usr/src/sys/dev/random/probe.c. The issue is that my processor doesn't support the cpuid opcode, just as many 486's don't. I found nothing in UPDATING regarding the issue. I also inquired about it on the mailing lists 3 times, so I believe it's not my error. >How-To-Repeat: Compile a 5.3 kernel on a 486 processor that doesn't support the cpuid opcode and try to boot to it. >Fix: Edit the code so it doesn't use the cpuid opcode on processors that do not support it.
