In the normal x86 installation, sysinstall first create the Slice in the selected Disk and then it will goto DiskLabel Editor to create partitions on the slice. I couldn't see this step in IA64 install. It skips the Slice creation and directly Goes to Partition creation Screen. What is the reason behind this?=20 2. In the current partition creation(disklabel editor) screen, I can see only EFI partition as 100MB size. Actually I already has RedHat AS 2.1 installed on this machine. But that ext2 & swap partition are not displayed at all. Will sysinstall/IA64 doesn't understand Linux & other Oses(windoz)?=20 In other way, how can I dual boot Linux & FreeBSD on PE3250? Last week while doing autopartitioning it corrupted my existing Linux Partition (ie: It occupied the entire disk except the EFI partition). At that time I didn't noticed it, so I was wondering what went wrong. Now I got the glitch. Any pointers? Thanks. --T. There are no slices on ia64 or put differently, there's no need for a secord level partitioning scheme if you have all the space in the GPT. So where on i386 you need two levels (MBR + BSD disklabel) for various reasons, on ia64 this can all be handled by the GPT. > 2. FreeBSD doesn't do anything yet with foreign partitions. Unfortunately, the sysinstall tool destroys foreign partitions. This clearly is a bug. (this stop installing FreeBSD and taking me back to initial Install Menu) But If I do autopartition and press 'Q' button, it works fine.=20 But it doesn't create EFI partition If one is not there. Also=20 it doesn't make entries in the EFI Boot menu. How can I add boot=20 entry to EFI menu? With minimal install I can able to install=20 FreeBSD using AutoPartition but EFI is not there. So I couldn't=20 boot FreeBSD. There is no facility to change the partition types in DiskLabel editor=20 (like toggling the SoftUpdates). I have to delete the partition and I=20 have to recreate it with desired type. So better we can replace it with FDISK=20 For FreeBSD/IA64. So sshd startup fails. The issue is that our syscons(4) driver and related hardware driver have too much PC specific code that breaks on machines that don't have any PC legacy compatibility. The net effect is that no HP machines work when syscons is enabled. Hence, syscons is not supported by default. > > But I cannot get the login: prompt on the serial console. What is the > problem? True. But doesn't a rfi instruction restore RSE.BOF, and thus preserve the virtual to physical register mapping? Note also that we have the EPC syscall path (sys/ia64/ia64/syscall.S), where we also switch stacks, but we do not have the rfi on our way out. This could mean that we actually do need an invala in that case. I do not know under which conditions RSE.BOF is preserved... -- Marcel Moolenaar USPA: A-39004 marcel@xcllnt.net From owner-freebsd-ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Thu May 13 01:10:56 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6B2EA16A4CE for ; Thu, 13 May 2004 01:10:56 -0700 (PDT) Received: from lists.suse.com (lists.suse.com [195.135.221.131]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 0526E43D49 for ; Thu, 13 May 2004 01:10:53 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from suse-security-return-@suse.com) Received: (qmail 26531 invoked by alias); 13 May 2004 08:10:50 -0000 Mailing-List: contact suse-security-help@suse.com; run by ezmlm Date: 13 May 2004 08:10:50 -0000 Message-ID: <1084435850.26530.ezmlm@suse.com> From: suse-security-return-@suse.com To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Delivered-To: responder for suse-security@suse.com Received: (qmail 26521 invoked from network); 13 May 2004 08:10:50 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO hermes.suse.de) (195.135.221.8) by 0 with SMTP; 13 May 2004 08:10:50 -0000 Received: from scanhost.suse.de (scanhost.suse.de [10.0.0.5]) by hermes.suse.de (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7E54668DA3 for ; Thu, 13 May 2004 10:10:50 +0200 (CEST) Received: by scanhost.suse.de (Postfix, from userid 0) id 7362945012; Thu, 13 May 2004 10:10:50 +0200 (CEST) Delivered-To: virus-quarantine Received: from Cantor.suse.de (ns.suse.de [195.135.220.2]) (using TLSv1 with cipher EDH-RSA-DES-CBC3-SHA (168/168 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by hermes.suse.de (Postfix) with ESMTP id 422C868930 for ; Thu, 13 May 2004 10:07:11 +0200 (CEST) Received: from suse.com (unknown [213.157.209.152]) by Cantor.suse.de (Postfix) with ESMTP id ED43B599F61 for ; Thu, 13 May 2004 10:05:15 +0200 (CEST) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Subject: ezmlm response X-BeenThere: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the IA-64 List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 13 May 2004 08:10:56 -0000 Hi! It straightaway goes in by displaying the /etc/motd and then displays the shell prompt. But I remember that I had given the password for root, while installing FreeBSD. Then remount the root partition as read-write mode and started the sshd server successfully. But I cannot login either from another another machine in the network or using 'ssh localhost' Command on the same m/c. It throws the "Permission denied (publickey, keyboard-interactive)" error. Why Password is not accepted while logging in? What is the issue with the SSH daemon? Thanks. --T. There's no issue. The server is simply configured to disallow passwords on FreeBSD. Change the configuration of the server or create a public key. Please understand that if people are new to FreeBSD, they very often have the wrong expectations. What automaticly works on some other OS may not work on FreeBSD without changing the configuration first. My guess is that you dived in the deep end by trying FreeBSD for the first time on a new platform. That's fine, but that also means that you have to work at least 3 times as hard to make sure the problem is not pilot error or generic FreeBSD before reporting problem. There are basicly 3 lists that you can or should use: questions@FreeBSD.org - Generic questions like the SSH issue. current@FreeBSD.org - Platform independent issues related to using development code. ia64@FreeBSD.org - ia64 specific issues like the sysinstall behaviour. The bottom line is that I cannot and will not answer every question that's posted on the ia64@ list, simply because I don't have the time for it nor want to give up important work to make time for it. Please keep the above in mind when you run into something, -- Marcel Moolenaar USPA: A-39004 marcel@xcllnt.net From owner-freebsd-ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Thu May 13 15:42:42 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B725C16A4CE for ; Thu, 13 May 2004 15:42:42 -0700 (PDT) Received: from hermes.sc.intel.com (fmr03.intel.com [143.183.121.5]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 38A2D43D54 for ; Thu, 13 May 2004 15:42:42 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from arun.sharma@intel.com) Received: from petasus.sc.intel.com (petasus.sc.intel.com [10.3.253.4]) 1.15 2004/01/30 18:16:28 root Exp $) with ESMTP id i4DMh2rh022571; Thu, 13 May 2004 22:43:02 GMT Received: from unix-os.sc.intel.com (unix-os.sc.intel.com [143.183.96.244]) major-inner.mc,v 1.10 2004/03/01 19:21:36 root Exp $) with ESMTP id i4DMhQ8I011077; Thu, 13 May 2004 22:43:26 GMT Received: from intel.com (adsharma-desk.amr.corp.intel.com [143.183.130.155]) by unix-os.sc.intel.com (8.11.6/8.11.2) with ESMTP id i4DMgbF27152; Thu, 13 May 2004 15:42:39 -0700 Message-ID: <40A3F9DD.8080201@intel.com> Date: Thu, 13 May 2004 15:42:37 -0700 From: Arun Sharma User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 0.5 (Windows/20040207) X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Marcel Moolenaar References: <40A2A0A2.8040004@intel.com> <20040512232827.GB45389@ns1.xcllnt.net> <40A2D3D7.4030804@intel.com> <20040513053053.GA4487@dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net> In-Reply-To: <20040513053053.GA4487@dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Scanned-By: MIMEDefang 2.31 (www . roaringpenguin . com / mimedefang) cc: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: invala X-BeenThere: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the IA-64 List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 13 May 2004 22:42:42 -0000 On 5/12/2004 10:30 PM, Marcel Moolenaar wrote: > On Wed, May 12, 2004 at 06:48:07PM -0700, Arun Sharma wrote: >> On 5/12/2004 4:28 PM, Marcel Moolenaar wrote: >> >> >On Wed, May 12, 2004 at 03:09:38PM -0700, Arun Sharma wrote: >> >> >> >>I noticed that the code in exception.S:TRAP() doesn't invalidate the ALAT >> >>on a register backing store switch. But the SDM vol2 section 4.4.5.3.2 lists three other reasons, one of which happens to be: - Software changes virtual to physical mapping So if you have code that looks like: ld.a r6=[Y] // Stores physical register and a physical address tag in the ALAT ... >> An exception here can change the virtual to physical mapping << st8 [Y]=Z // Doesn't invalidate the ALAT chk.a.clr And the chk incorrectly thinks that the speculation succeeded. Obviously, the above has nothing to do with whether the kernel itself has been compiled with data speculation or not. The possibility I'm looking at is: ld.a r6=[Y] ... st8 [Y]=Z // Clears the ALAT >> external interrupt + kernel data speculation leaving stale ALAT entries << chk.a.clr // Speculation succeeds incorrectly To remedy the first example, the OS needs a invala on entry and for the second situation it needs an invala on exit. -Arun From owner-freebsd-ia64@FreeBSD.ORG Thu May 13 15:51:05 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 07E7D16A4CE for ; Thu, 13 May 2004 15:51:05 -0700 (PDT) Received: from caduceus.sc.intel.com (fmr04.intel.com [143.183.121.6]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BADCF43D5A for ; Thu, 13 May 2004 15:51:04 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from arun.sharma@intel.com) Received: from talaria.sc.intel.com (talaria.sc.intel.com [10.3.253.5]) major-outer.mc,v 1.15 2004/01/30 18:16:28 root Exp $) with ESMTP id i4DMpmH4006367; Thu, 13 May 2004 22:51:48 GMT Received: from unix-os.sc.intel.com (unix-os.sc.intel.com [143.183.96.244]) major-inner.mc,v 1.10 2004/03/01 19:21:36 root Exp $) with ESMTP id i4DMpOeB000586; Thu, 13 May 2004 22:51:24 GMT Received: from intel.com (adsharma-desk.amr.corp.intel.com [143.183.130.155]) by unix-os.sc.intel.com (8.11.6/8.11.2) with ESMTP id i4DMoxF27316; Thu, 13 May 2004 15:50:59 -0700 Message-ID: <40A3FBD3.501@intel.com> Date: Thu, 13 May 2004 15:50:59 -0700 From: Arun Sharma User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 0.5 (Windows/20040207) X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Marcel Moolenaar References: <20040513160130.GC6572@dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net> In-Reply-To: <20040513160130.GC6572@dhcp01.pn.xcllnt.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Scanned-By: MIMEDefang 2.31 (www . roaringpenguin . com / mimedefang) cc: Muthu_T@Dell.com cc: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Mountroot panic trace X-BeenThere: freebsd-ia64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the IA-64 List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 13 May 2004 22:51:05 -0000 On 5/13/2004 9:01 AM, Marcel Moolenaar wrote: > On Thu, May 13, 2004 at 05:01:41PM +0530, Muthu_T@Dell.com wrote: >> Hi, >> Just pressing the enter key in the mountroot> prompt leads to kernel >> panic. > > This is normal behaviour. You need to login via serial console and edit /etc/sshd_config to allow PermitRootLogin. You don't really want to invalidate the ALAT just in case a VM mapping might change. In practice I don't expect this to happen other than when the process has been swapped out before and is now being swapped in. > Obviously, the above has nothing to do with whether the kernel itself has > been compiled with data speculation or not. I agree that we need to pay attention to it, but I'd like to have a more detailed analysis before we add invala instructions. I feel that invalidating the ALAT on entry into the kernel and on exit from the kernel is too much of a pessimization. I can easily be wrong... -- Marcel Moolenaar USPA: A-39004 marcel@xcllnt.net
