Well, I'm not a commiter so that won't be me. Added the fact that I am working on bsd.java.mk-2.0 for now. Anyway, as soon as it is commited, I will investigate various other FreeBSD/Java issues, such as: - This current issue: JAVA_PKGNAMEPREFIX - INSTALL_JAR: a macro to install a JAR file with right permissions in the right place (JAVAJARDIR) and fill the plist accordingly. - USE_ANT: Apache Ant support in bsd.java.mk (a PR is underway: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=59997) - JAVA_BUILD/JAVA_RUN: macros to specify JDK/JRE dependencies - WANT_JAVA_{VERSION|OS|VENDOR}: macros to specify prefered JDK - ...and many more (such as the Java porter handbook) The list is quite long but that should not stop us from discussing this current issue. Anyway, I would really like to have bsd.java.mk-2.0 commited before we start over another set of major changes. > On the other hand I think stating for which JDK it is compiled > is going a bit too far from my perspective. I think one should > assume to always compile it with the latest stable release, > and otherwise state it in a message a make time that it requires > a specific version, thus making it an install issue. I agree this may be a little too complex indeed. But having a JAVA_PKGNAMEPREFIX set by bsd.java.mk would allow us to quickly change this behaviour so we could go for 'java-' for a start as this is probably enough for now, but then switch to a versioned prefix if people find it necessary. Still left is the issue whether Java ports should be compiled from source or just installed using binary releases... and I haven't got a clue on this one. However, we have only three opinions here and we all agree that /java- is a nice place for a Java port. I have some stuff that I would like to port, such as IBM aglets, JXTA and some Jakarta libs but I have yet to decide whether or not I will adopt this convention... I think we need more feedback from the other Java porters to decide. The JDK is = jdk-1.4.2p5. Since the user surge, the main thread has been dying = repeatedly during peak hours at ServerSocket.accept() with the following = message: Exception in thread "main" java.net.SocketException: Too many open files at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.socketAccept(Native Method) Now, here comes the weird stuff: My system is _not_ running out of file = descriptors when this happens (kern.maxfiles =3D 16384, kern.openfiles = =3D ~630), _nor_ is the per-process file descriptor limit being reached = (it's set to unlimited). The heap is not full, either; its maximum size = is set to 128 MB and it's under 60 MB when the thread dies. And there's = plenty of both physical and virtual memory left. I have written a small program that attempts to open 2,048 concurrent = connections to the server in oder to reproduce this. On my FreeBSD box, = the thread dies with the above exception at 500-600 open connections. = When running the server application on Win32, on the other hand, I'm = able to open all the 2,048 connections without a hitch. In a nutshell, I'm getting a "Too many open files" error message but the = message appears to be lying. The system-wide file descriptor limit is = far from being reached, the per-process limit can never be reached, the = heap is far from being full, and there's a reasonable amount of free = physical and virtual memory. And the problem does not occur when the = server application is run on the Win32 version of the JDK. Has anyone run into this problem before, or does anyone know of a fix or = whether it's been fixed in jdk-1.4.2p6? I could just go ahead and = compile p6, but it would take many hours and I can't stress the old = server that much while running this service. Any input will be greatly appreciated. I complained about something similar in the diablo 1.3 JDK package in a message about a week ago and got no replies: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-java/2004-March/001810.html the crux of the problem seems to be that there is a max file descriptor setting within the JVM that is set to be very low in the FreeBSD native JVMs but interestingly enough, not in the linux ones which I can run under emulation in FreeBSD. This might not be the particular bug in question, but the test program does give similar results: http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4189011.html I'd be interested in finding out a solution to this before 1.5 as that bug suggests. Seems like the 2048 on Win are some arbitrary limit as well (didn't someone benchmark a tuned 4-STABLE with some 1,6 MILLION concurrent connections to a dummy server? So one would guess more than 2K connections should be possible when the system is configured properly). I think the default hoovers somewhere around 1024 file descriptors, so 500 to 600 is reasonable considering that the system and daemons will chew up a few of their own. My CURRENT box says: #sysctl -a | grep files kern.maxfiles: 7560 kern.maxfilesperproc: 6804 Best regards, Gabriel From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Mar 18 15:12:54 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6C72E16A4CF; Thu, 18 Mar 2004 15:12:54 -0800 (PST) Received: from Bastion.VanValzah.Com (Bastion.VanValzah.Com [64.81.228.180]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9D82A43D2D; Thu, 18 Mar 2004 15:12:52 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from Bob@VanValzah.Com) Received: from Relent.VanValzah.Com (Relent.VanValzah.Com [10.168.60.2]) i2INCqdv097983; Thu, 18 Mar 2004 17:12:52 -0600 (CST) (envelope-from Bob@VanValzah.Com) Received: from [127.0.0.1] (localhost [127.0.0.1])i2INCod3067151; Thu, 18 Mar 2004 17:12:51 -0600 (CST) (envelope-from Bob@VanValzah.Com) From: Bob Van Valzah To: Java@FreeBSD.Org, Ports@FreeBSD.Org Content-Type: text/plain Message-Id: <1079651570.78067.31.camel@NewStorm.War.Tibco.Com> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Ximian Evolution 1.4.5 Date: Thu, 18 Mar 2004 17:12:50 -0600 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: Why No jsvc Jakarta Commons Daemon Port? I need to do virtual hosting for several web sites with Tomcat, so operation on port 80 is a must. Running Tomcat as root is not an option from a security point of view. Port forwarding with with IPFIREWALL is not an option because I don't want to muck with the firewall every time a site comes or goes. I've played with mod_jk and mod_jk2, but it's been a struggle to configure them and they didn't fare well under some load testing I did. So it seems like the commons daemon is the obvious choice for me. I know that the daemon source is installed as part of the Tomcat5 port, but it's been a struggle to get it running and I'm not there yet. Are my requirements and/or experiences that unusual? Advice appreciated. I may submit a port if there's interest from others and no good alternative. I really do apologize if its been covered before (in a bikeshed manner). I'll still be open to abuse if its constructive, I may well have missed out on a few months worths of discussion. I'm not really apologizing about that though, some ppl are getting too hung up on things lately. Java Libraries -------------- I personally feel better following some sort of BSD scheme with libraries, so I'm proposing all shared Java libraries get installed under: /usr/lib/java/* (and here I show neophyteness, should that be /usr/local/java/lib/* or something) The important point here is versioning... I think each library must strictly obey a versioning scheme, my personal preference if a four point one: ___ in terms of versioning names... Java could care less about the names, but we can... they should get picked up in the classpath by making sense of the versioning. That's really been about the only trouble I've had with Java (its various libraries), the different JDK's are another matter and I think that needs rationalising... e.g. hopefully we'll get to an endgame where the Linux JDK is totally redundant. Anyway, these are all just random thoughts, I hope I haven't offended anyone thats already put in a large amount of work, and slainte :) Cheers, Joe > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-freebsd-java@freebsd.org > [mailto:owner-freebsd-java@freebsd.org]On Behalf Of Joe Shevland > Sent: Friday, 19 March 2004 11:10 PM > To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org > Subject: RE: tomcat41 producing 28 java daemons > > > I guess my latest bugbear (bikeshed? Not sure, but I think they are targetting for a mid year release and that would mean the API should approach a freeze these days. Anyway, once one SWT is ported, it should become possible to build the thing much more easily and further updates would become easier, too. There is one other major alternative - mod_proxy. The problem with mod_proxy is that Tomcat will not be aware of the proxying, which will make web applications unaware of the *actual* address used by the web browser to contact the application. But on the other hand mod_proxy is pretty much guaranteed to work with whatever version of Apache you're using, while mod_jk can be a pain to get running/compiled sometimes. -- / Peter Schuller, InfiDyne Technologies HB PGP userID: 0xE9758B7D or 'Peter Schuller ' Key retrieval: Send an E-Mail to getpgpkey@scode.org E-Mail: peter.schuller@infidyne.com Web: http://www.scode.org From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Mar 19 05:06:49 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2CE2616A4CE for ; Fri, 19 Mar 2004 05:06:49 -0800 (PST) Received: from smta11.mail.ozemail.net (smta11.mail.ozemail.net [203.103.165.150]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 619D343D2D for ; Fri, 19 Mar 2004 05:06:48 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from joe.shevland@e-wise.com) Received: from AMADAN ([203.102.246.65]) by smta11.mail.ozemail.net with SMTP id <20040319130532.EMPX23967.smta11.mail.ozemail.net@AMADAN>; Fri, 19 Mar 2004 13:05:32 +0000 From: "Joe Shevland" To: Date: Sat, 20 Mar 2004 00:06:55 +1100 Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook IMO, Build 9.0.2416 (9.0.2911.0) Importance: Normal X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1165 In-Reply-To: <886651906.20040319135520@buz.ch> cc: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Subject: RE: Re[4]: tomcat41 producing 28 java daemons X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 19 Mar 2004 13:06:49 -0000 OK, I'll dig in, and hopefully I haen't bitten off more than I can chew. Yes. The linux emulator emulates the clone() based threads of Linux kernels from 2.2 through 2.4 (NPTL of 2.6 would only show up as one thread). In that approach each thread shows up as a separate process. If you don't want this then switch to the native 1.4.2 JDK and you'll only see the one process. -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Web : http://www.eyesbeyond.com Information Technology FreeBSD : glewis@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Mar 19 08:09:33 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 285C316A4D0 for ; Fri, 19 Mar 2004 08:09:33 -0800 (PST) Received: from iota.root-servers.ch (iota.root-servers.ch [193.41.193.195]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 1906843D3F for ; Fri, 19 Mar 2004 08:09:32 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gabriel_ambuehl@buz.ch) Received: (qmail 86042 invoked from network); 19 Mar 2004 16:09:30 -0000 Received: from 217-162-135-163.dclient.hispeed.ch (HELO ?10.2.2.3?) Sure, I've been running 3.0 since M5. Building the native SWT and launcher is a mess each time. I had to hack a few Makefiles and build.{c,}sh scripts. I always wanted to share my patches, but never got around. Guess it would be more easy (timewise) if I shared the *.so's. I'll find out how I create a homepage with my provider. Maybe tomorrow :-) -- Regards, Georg.
