Once again, Project Evil Laboratories has a new victim^Wsubject to contend with: the Intel Centrino 2200BG 802.11b/g wireless card. This is a companion to the Intel 2100 802.11b card, which already works with the NDISulator. Unfortunately, the 2200BG does _not_ work: currently, the card will be detected correctly but trying to ifconfig the interface up leads to a panic. I suspect this has to do with calling the ndis_ticktask() routine too soon after MiniportInitialize() routine has completed, but I can't be sure what's going on since I don't have a sample card to experiment with. This is where _you_ can help. Yes, you. Over there. With the computer. If you have one of these cards then Project Evil needs you! The only way to really debug this problem is with console access to a machine that has one of them (this is because one of the required tools is the kernel debugger, DDB). This means one of two things: 1) If you have a laptop with one of these NICs and can somehow manage to set up a serial console, it would be nifty if you give me ssh access to it for a couple of hours. In theory, the presence of an actual wireless net is not required (I just need to make sure the interface comes up and doesn't crash). The laptop should be running FreeBSD 5.2-RELEASE or later. 2) If you can bear to part with your NIC for a while, put it in a box and send it to Project Evil Laboratories: Attn: Bill Paul Wind River Systems 500 Wind River Way Alameda, CA. 94501 USA Offers to help test stuff won't do me any good: I don't know where the problem is yet, so I can't begin to suggest what to test. Also, for those who have been wondering, this is where things stand right now with Project Evil's wireless NIC support: - Intel Centrino 2100 -- works - Atheros 5212 cardbus (LinkSys WPC55AG) -- works - Atheros 5211 miniPCI (IBM) -- works - RealTek RTL8180 (with driver from RealTek website) -- works - ADMtek ADM8211 (with driver from ADMtek webside) -- works - AMD Am1771/1772 (with SMC 2602 v3 driver) -- works - Broadcom 43xx cardbus/PCI/miniPCI -- works - Cisco 340 PCMCIA card -- works - InProcomm IPN2120 -- untested, but should work - Intel PRO/5000 wireless (atheros chip) -- unknown, didn't work last I heard, don't have one - Prism 54G -- doesn't work, don't have one, don't know where to get one - 3Com 3C154G72 -- doesn't work, don't know what chip it is, don't have one, don't know where to get one - Cisco 350MPI - doesn't work, might be getting one on loan soon Note that there are a couple of badly designed laptops out there which require the use of a Windows utility to enable the power and/or antenna for their built-in wireless NICs. Supporting these is tricky since these utilities are outside the scope of the NDIS spec. There exist some Linux utilities for dealing with these laptops which can be ported to FreeBSD without too much trouble (they just frob a couple of I/O ports). Note that Project Evil would also appreciate loans/donations of cards listed as "doesn't work" in the above list. :) -Bill -- ============================================================================= -Bill Paul (510) 749-2329 | Senior Engineer, Master of Unix-Fu wpaul@windriver.com | Wind River Systems ============================================================================= you're just BEGGING to face the moose ============================================================================= From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Mar 15 10:30:14 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 39C1316A4CE for ; Mon, 15 Mar 2004 10:30:14 -0800 (PST) Received: from mailhost.stack.nl (vaak.stack.nl [131.155.140.140]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 518B043D2F for ; Mon, 15 Mar 2004 10:30:13 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from jilles@stack.nl) Received: from turtle.stack.nl (turtle.stack.nl [2001:610:1108:5010:2e0:81ff:fe22:51d8]) by mailhost.stack.nl (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4055F634#179AA1F006; Mon, 15 Mar 2004 19:30:12 +0100 (CET) Received: by turtle.stack.nl (Postfix, from userid 1677) id E8DE51CC2E; Mon, 15 Mar 2004 19:30:11 +0100 (CET) Date: Mon, 15 Mar 2004 19:30:11 +0100 From: Jilles Tjoelker To: Alejandro 'lanjoe9' Valenzuela Message-ID: <20040315183011.GA45612@stack.nl> References: <3fb4643d.f3.3c30.21812@prodigy.net.mx> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <3fb4643d.f3.3c30.21812@prodigy.net.mx> X-Operating-System: FreeBSD 5.2.1-RELEASE-p1 i386 User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.6i cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Problems with a Toshiba 503 Satellite X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 15 Mar 2004 18:30:14 -0000 On Thu, Nov 13, 2003 at 11:12:29PM -0500, Alejandro 'lanjoe9' Valenzuela wrote: > One last question: how do I "rescan" the USB ports so the > computer can detect when I plug in a generic mouse after > FreeBSD has started? The usbd(8) daemon is required for USB hot-plug to work. I know of at least one other problem: Probably, your machine has more than one USB bus. By default (FreeBSD 4.x), only the device node for the first bus (/dev/usb0) is created and usbd(8) will only service that first bus. To solve that, use MAKEDEV(8) to create the device nodes for the other buses (you can see in dmesg how many you need). -- Jilles Tjoelker From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Mar 15 11:56:20 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0FE1416A4E7 for ; Mon, 15 Mar 2004 11:56:17 -0800 (PST) Received: from mail3.speakeasy.net (mail3.speakeasy.net [216.254.0.203]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B697743D48 for ; Mon, 15 Mar 2004 11:56:17 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from jhb@FreeBSD.org) Received: (qmail 7124 invoked from network); 15 Mar 2004 19:56:16 -0000 Received: from dsl027-160-063.atl1.dsl.speakeasy.net (HELO server.baldwin.cx) ([216.27.160.63]) (envelope-sender ) encrypted SMTP for ; 15 Mar 2004 19:56:16 -0000 Received: from 10.50.40.205 (gw1.twc.weather.com [216.133.140.1]) by server.baldwin.cx (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id i2FJt42D059716; Mon, 15 Mar 2004 14:56:12 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from jhb@FreeBSD.org) From: John Baldwin To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Date: Mon, 15 Mar 2004 11:34:14 -0500 User-Agent: KMail/1.6 References: <4054DD00.8080504@clope.net> In-Reply-To: <4054DD00.8080504@clope.net> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Disposition: inline Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-Id: <200403151134.14407.jhb@FreeBSD.org> X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.63 (2004-01-11) on server.baldwin.cx cc: Alexandre Ahmim-Richard cc: njl@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: ACPI & pcmcia problem X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 15 Mar 2004 19:56:21 -0000 On Sunday 14 March 2004 05:30 pm, Alexandre Ahmim-Richard wrote: > Hi, > > I'm experiencing the problem of acpi which is disabling the pcmcia > support... > Here is my dmesg : > cbb0: at device 8.0 on pci0 > cardbus0: on cbb0 > pccard0: <16-bit PCCard bus> on cbb0 > pcib0: _PRS resource entry has unsupported type 2 Hmm type 2 is: #define ACPI_RSTYPE_START_DPF 2 #define ACPI_RSTYPE_END_DPF 3 It may be that an IRQ is hidden down inside the DPF (whatever that is) so perhaps we need to add DPF support somewhere in the ACPI code? I haven't been able to install FreeBSD 5.x or correct the sound card problem, and very much like you, I use FreeBSD 4.9 which works nicely. I'd like to solve a detail though: I once found in one of these lists a patch to work around a bug in the laptop's keyboard (when using X server, sometimes keypressess get duplicated, which can be veeryy annnoooyiiing when typing passwords), which involved patching atkbd.c or a similar file. If you've got it, ¿Could you forward it to me, please? Although I don't have any problems once I log in and use the "slow keys" feature, I'd like to correct it to avoid annoyances with GDM.. Thank you again very much for your reply Hopefully these issues may be corrected when FreeBSD 5.3/Stable comes out... I have a well working Dell Latitude D600 running with 5.2.1-RELEASE It runs perfectly when on ixnt's own, so to say. When I place the machine in the Dell D/Port Advanced Port Replicator i.e. their docking module, the machine responds to the external keyboard but very strangely. There is some kind of delay from when I touch a key and until it appears on the external screen. And randomly keys are doubled, and sometimes there is no output at all from a key. I've only tested booting when the machine is in the dock. Not placing it there already booted. -- Gunnar Flygt SR Datadrift Sveriges Radio From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Mar 16 03:04:41 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E902016A4CE for ; Tue, 16 Mar 2004 03:04:41 -0800 (PST) Received: from srv-interscan (pools1-134.adsl.nordnet.fr [195.146.234.134]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 368A443D54 for ; Tue, 16 Mar 2004 03:04:40 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from thomas.delemer@crous-lille.fr) Received: from webmail.crous-lille.fr ([192.168.1.252]) by srv-interscan with InterScan Messaging Security Suite; Tue, 16 Mar 2004 12:10:00 +0100 Received: from thomas ([10.247.218.101]) by webmail.crous-lille.fr with Microsoft SMTPSVC(5.0.2195.6713); Tue, 16 Mar 2004 12:05:49 +0100 Message-ID: <00f901c40b46$78716490$65daf70a@thomas> From: "Thomas DELEMER" To: Date: Tue, 16 Mar 2004 12:04:33 +0100 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1158 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1165 X-OriginalArrivalTime: 16 Mar 2004 11:05:49.0750 (UTC) FILETIME=[A3D55560:01C40B46] Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.1 Subject: realtek + laptop acer X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 16 Mar 2004 11:04:42 -0000 Ok. I think it arises from this dmesg snippet cbb0: mem 0x20822000-0x20822fff at device 2.0 on pci0 cardbus0: on cbb0 pccard0: <16-bit PCCard bus> on cbb0 : ROUTE_INTERRUPT failed. cbb: Unable to map IRQ... device_probe_and_attach: cbb0 attach returned 12 cbb0: mem 0x20821000-0x20821fff at device 2.1 on pci0 cardbus1: on cbb0 pccard1: <16-bit PCCard bus> on cbb0 : ROUTE_INTERRUPT failed. cbb: Unable to map IRQ... device_probe_and_attach: cbb0 attach returned 12 I am posting to this list after lightweight search on other forums/threads for people experiencing the same thing. The 770 was flashed to the latest IBM provided bios about 10 months ago. Also, I am aware that this is fairly old and relatively specialized hardware, so since it is being used as a baby firewall machine, i have left out any ACPI or APM functionality. The system was working fine (with no/zero/nada loader.conf or pccard.conf/devd.conf tweaking) and tracking cvsup under freebsd-current up to and including its last successful kernel build February 4th, 2004. On March 10th, in response to the TCP d.o.s. security advisory I rebuilt kernel/world. On reboot pf caused the machine to panic, when I turned off pf the cause of the panic was traced to the ep0 network interface not existing anymore. It had prior to the rebuild. I was and am using very lightly modified GENERIC without OLDCARD. After a fruitless cursory search of the lists to see if this was a well known issue, and hoping that I had just hit a "moment" in 5-current, I waited a week for stabilization. I rebuilt again 20040313 - and there seemed a fair amount of code updated - and a sizable number of changes when running mergemaster. The machine came back up without issues - but still without ep0. And still with all sorts of pci issues in dmesg. I believe the issue originates from cbb not getting an IRQ (see dmesg below). Although I have an ee background I have strayed from the true path and have only a very vague idea of what this means. I see a lot of traffic about ACPI issues and BIOS pnp in the lists, the closest I can find to my specific issue is this thread http://www.bsdforums.org/forums/sho...8&highlight=cbb which does not resolve the specific or a general issue. In conclusion, 1. Does anyone have any ideas on a quick fix? 2. Or where I should drag my sorry ass to find the not-so-quick fix 3.Worst case scenario where - can anyone suggest a robust pcmcia NIC that works OOTB on generic 5-current on a thinkpad 770?
