I've never really bothered with power management (apm, acpi, etc...), since I always use it plugged in. That may change, however. I'm wiping the hard drive and installing FreeBSD 5.2.1 from scratch, I want CardBus and Wi-Fi. I may also start fiddling with ACPI. I've read that some laptops use special partitions to store the contents of RAM when hibernating, sleeping, coma, whatever... Does anyone know anything about this? Should I make a special partition for this kind of thing? Where? (first? last?) How big? What kind of partition? (FAT32? FAT16? UFS?) As I recall, when I got the laptop, it did NOT have any special partitions (I wiped it the day that I got it and installed FreeBSD). Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!! -- Michael A. As far as I know, FreeBSD currently is unable to suspend to disc, as I can't find any notes where to tell it about suspend/resume partition (I wish it to be like "acpi_resume=/dev/ad0s3" in loader.conf, for example). Correct me if I am wrong. But you can try suspending to RAM, however, currently my vaio laptop goes to bed happily but it can't wakeup after it, so I'm unhappy with suspending at all. However, I remember it supports handing the s.t.d. over to the system bios if your `sysctl hw.acpi.s4bios` is "1". To achieve that, you have to have your hibernation partition configured. You can then s.t.d. using `acpiconf -s 4`. I haven't tried it yet because (and here comes the other advise) the tool which creates the hibernation-partition ("HDPREPEZ") needs to reside in the first 8 GBs of the disk. Unfortunately, this is where FreeBSD is sitting and I was too lazy to move my F'BSD installation so far. So, just to answer the question "where?": at the beginning. Dunno what partition type, I recommend using your BIOS manufacturer's software tools. The enhancements of laptop support is rapidly progressing and is much better today than it was when 5.2.1 was released. Many laptops have a suspend to disk capability built into BIOS and FreeBSD can use this. IT requires the creation of a special partition (slice) which is normally done using a utility from the computer maker. I can't say whether Sony has one. Even if it does, it must be near the beginning of the hard drive (can't remember just how close). I could not create one on my laptop because the NTFS partition with XP was too big. :-( Suspend/resume are now working for many systems, but FreeBSD still seems to have problems with some Sonys . Suspend is a low-power state. Basically, only RAM keep-alive is maintained. My laptop can last for several days when in this state. Hibernation or suspend to disk completely powers down the system. Some systems also support a light sleep which only stops the CPU and turns off the display. This one still drains the battery pretty quickly. > As I recall, when I got the laptop, it did NOT have any special > partitions (I wiped it the day that I got it and installed FreeBSD). Probably not as recent versions of Windows have their own, built-in suspend files and don't rely on the BIOS capability. They save to a file in the Windows partition. It's possible that your laptop BIOS does not even support it. -- R. Kevin Oberman, Network Engineer Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) Ernest O. I guess you won't see 800x600x4 there. AFAIK, ATI doesn't support 800x600x4bpp since Mobility M1. So there's no chance to get VESA_800x600. If you are running CURRENT, John Baldwin has added VESA DPMS to the acpi_video kernel module. I suspect that this will work on you system, but I am never positive of anything on any other laptop. google on acpi_video_dpms.patch in Google Groups. I believe that is the time in seconds between updates to the life and time entries. That lets you know how fast it is possible to poll the information. If you are not aware of it, you can get quite a bit of additional information on your batteries with the command 'acpiconf -i n', where 'n' is the battery number starting with 0 for the first battery. -- R. If it's all about VESA_800x600 - there's no chance - check out my post from May, 11th answering "why i can not set VESA_800x600." I do use 80x30 mode - that's the best what ATI Mobility M1 can do fine. (I don't like 80x50/80x60 and for some reason these modes are unstable). > Aside from that, it seems that ACPI is not running very well, since I > cannot make my laptop wake up correctly after a sleep. I'm not sure why, but wake up doesn't turn video on. Except of that (e.g. networking) everything seems fine.
