But I have a little trouble with this work. First: my computer is running a FreeBSD 5.2 and I have a WinTV PVR 250 (Rev.2) Card. Let me tell you, what was wrong. John worte: 1) Use patch to apply Patch.iicbb It was working by me, but I found by patching: Hunk #4 failed at 361 Ignoring this, and taking it from hand (writing the Line "DRIVER_MODULE(iicbb, cxm_iic, iicbb_driver, iicbb_devclass, 0, 0);" by hand into the file /sys/dev/iicbus/iicbb.c) all this stuff worked - only Johns meaning for # cp cxm/cxm.ko cxm_iic/cxm_iic.ko /modules is'nt running. On FreeBSD 5.2 it must be # cp cxm/cxm.ko cxm_iic/cxm_iic.ko /boot/modules. Next, John wrote: your console should say something like: cxm0: mem 0xd8000000-0xdbffffff irq 12 at device 10 .0 on pci0 cxm_iic0: on cxm0 iicbb0: on cxm_iic0 cxm0: Philips FI1236 MK2 tuner And I found: cxm0: mem 0xe8000000-0xebffffff irq 5 at device 10.0 on pci2 cxm_iic0: on cxm0 cxm_iic0: could not attach iicbb uaaaah :-( As I said "kldload cxm.ko" in a terminal on KDE, my computer crashed completely. As next I started without the X-Server, and typing at new "kldload cxm.ko" from the console. Ok, he did anything, giving the information: iicbus0: on iicbb0 master-only cxm0: unknown tuner-code 0x30 cxm0: could not initialize tuner smb1: detached and, unfortunately, he falls out to the "db>"-prompt. So, my question is: what the hell is the stuff with "tuner-code 0x30"? Where have I to write the right ones in Johns big and nice shar-archive? What must I do, to become informations about that foolish "0x30" and how to repair it in the Code? Or, maybe, anyone has another idea, to become my PVR 250 working at FreeBSD 5.2 ... Christoph S. I have a machine running FreeBSD 4.9-stable and XFree86 4.3.0. It has an Intel 845GV chipset, so when I connect it to my TV (and no other displays), I get console output (and X) on the TV. However, the output is in NTSC mode, not PAL (which is the "normal" TV standard in most of Europe). My TV handles NTSC, but this gives me black borders above and below the picture. Therefore, I world like to switch the TV output to PAL mode. I can't find anything in BIOS related to this. I have searched the web, but so far haven't found a solution there either. Changing console mode isn't required (though it would be nice), but getting XFree86 in PAl is needed, because I'm going to view TV on this box. Does anyone have a clue on how to change from NTSC to PAL on this chipset? -- Regards, Torfinn Ingolfsen, Norway From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Feb 18 23:32:35 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7B3B916A4CE for ; Wed, 18 Feb 2004 23:32:35 -0800 (PST) Received: from ftp.ccrle.nec.de (ftp.netlab.nec.de [195.37.70.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E4F6143D31 for ; Wed, 18 Feb 2004 23:32:34 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from lars.eggert@netlab.nec.de) Received: from netlab.nec.de (tokyo.netlab.nec.de [195.37.70.2]) by ftp.ccrle.nec.de (Postfix) with ESMTP id A844DF5A9; Thu, 19 Feb 2004 08:37:18 +0100 (CET) Message-ID: <4034668D.8090008@netlab.nec.de> Date: Thu, 19 Feb 2004 08:32:29 +0100 From: Lars Eggert Organization: NEC Network Laboratories User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 0.5 (Macintosh/20040208) X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Torfinn Ingolfsen References: <20040219005421.141380e0.torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no> In-Reply-To: <20040219005421.141380e0.torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no> Content-Type: multipart/signed; protocol="application/x-pkcs7-signature"; micalg=sha1; boundary="------------ms070005020206040607060509" cc: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Intel 845 and TV-out: how to switch to PAL mode? My TV handles NTSC, but this gives me > black borders above and below the picture. This won't solve your problem, but I see a similar issue on an Asus box with a SiS graphics chip. Console output is b/w with black borders, no matter whether I set the TV norm to PAL or NTSC in the BIOS. However, X output is fine. I assume you've tried X and it's also b/w? Lars PS: This may also be due to your TV and/or cabling. My oldish TV only takes composite input, with s-video input I get b/w output only. -- Lars Eggert NEC Network Laboratories --------------ms070005020206040607060509 Content-Type: I know that, for exemple, Hauppauge WinTV or the Miro PC TV are supported, but these are software compression capture cards. I also know that Zoran cards (like Pinnaccle DC10+) are NOT supported... Not that I'm not looking for DV capture, but regular video (composite or S-Video). Thanks in advance. As far as I know, the only cards with hardware mpeg encoder that are supported under FreeBSD are the PVR-250 and PVR-350 cards from Hauppauge. And, you will need to get the cxm driver which is under development. The newest snapshot was posted to this mailing list in January. Except for the fact that I can't change mode (NTSC / PAL) in the BIOS (at least I haven't found a setting for that yet). Do you use specific options for TV in your XF86Config file? > I assume you've tried X and it's also b/w? Yes. The reason I would like to change to PAL is to see if this would give me a color picture, and to get rid of the black borders (naturally). > PS: This may also be due to your TV and/or cabling. My oldish TV only > takes composite input, with s-video input I get b/w output only. Yes, i am aware of that. My (old) TV only has composite and SCART input (and RF / antenna of course). I have tried the following combinations: 1) s-video out from pc, via an s-video to composite adapter, to composite input on TV. 2) s-video out from pc, via a s-video to SCART adapter, to SCART input on TV. 3) composite out from pc, to composite input on TV. All combinations result in a b/w picture, both in console and in X. -- Yours, Torfinn Ingolfsen, Norway From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Feb 19 15:32:10 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 459D316A4CE for ; Thu, 19 Feb 2004 15:32:10 -0800 (PST) Received: from digger1.defence.gov.au (digger1.defence.gov.au [203.5.217.4]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8CAC943D1F for ; Thu, 19 Feb 2004 15:32:09 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from wilkinsa@squirm.dsto.defence.gov.au) Received: from ednmsw503.dsto.defence.gov.au (ednmsw503.dsto.defence.gov.au [131.185.2.150]) by digger1.defence.gov.au with ESMTP id i1JNVjZl013739 for ; Fri, 20 Feb 2004 10:01:46 +1030 (CST) Received: from muttley.dsto.defence.gov.au (unverified) by ednmsw503.dsto.defence.gov.au (Content Technologies SMTPRS 4.3.10) with ESMTP id for ; Fri, 20 Feb 2004 10:01:56 +1030 Received: from ednex501.dsto.defence.gov.au (ednex501.dsto.defence.gov.au [131.185.2.81]) by muttley.dsto.defence.gov.au (8.11.3/8.11.3) with ESMTP id i1JNQ8o20970 for ; Fri, 20 Feb 2004 09:56:08 +1030 (CST) Received: from squirm.dsto.defence.gov.au ([131.185.40.211]) by ednex501.dsto.defence.gov.au with SMTP (Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service Version 5.5.2653.13) id DLFVBZ78; Fri, 20 Feb 2004 09:55:59 +1030 Received: from squirm.dsto.defence.gov.au (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by squirm.dsto.defence.gov.au (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id i1JNQ9Kq045882 for ; Fri, 20 Feb 2004 09:56:09 +1030 (CST) (envelope-from wilkinsa@squirm.dsto.defence.gov.au) Received: (from wilkinsa@localhost) by squirm.dsto.defence.gov.au (8.12.10/8.12.10/Submit) id i1JNQ9B2045881 for freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org; Fri, 20 Feb 2004 09:56:09 +1030 (CST) (envelope-from wilkinsa) Date: Fri, 20 Feb 2004 09:56:09 +1030 From: Alex Wilkinson To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20040219232609.GA45864@squirm.dsto.defence.gov.au> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i Subject: sound card blocking X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 19 Feb 2004 23:32:10 -0000 Hi all, I have a strange problem. I am using xmms 1.2.8 to play mp3's and a very 'weird' thing happens. Whilst an mp3 is playing, xmms randomly will stop playing and a message will pop up that states: "Please check that: 1. You have the correct outplut plugin selected 2. No other programs is blocking the soundcard 3. Your soundcard is configured properly. " I also get these errors: esd: Esound sound daemon already running or stale UNIX socket /tmp/.esd/socket This socket already exists indicating esd is already running. This becommes *very* frustrating because I can just hit the play button on xmms and it starts playing again. Then in 30 mins or so it gets blocked again. Apparently it is in this chip that you would change from NTSC to PAL mode. Now, if I just had a FreeBSD program to do that... Intel's developer pages for "Intel Extreme Graphics" lists selection of wrong TV standard (NTSC / PAL / SECAM) as the most likely cause when you get a black and white picture on your TV. I know nothing about the Intel 845, but can offer a few hints about S-video and SCART connectors: - S-video provides two video signals: 'Y' and 'C'. The Y signal is the luminance and syncs, so is equivalent to a composite video signal for a b/w picture. The 'C' signal carries the colour sub-carrier. - It would theoretically be possible to build a passive converter to make composite from S-video (by adding the two signals together with a couple of resistors), though I've never seen one, and it wouldn't work wonderfully well. However, I HAVE seen a converter (supplied with Hauppauge PCI cards) which adapts a single RCA-phono connector for composite into an S-video connector. This is purely a mechanical adaptor, connecting to the 'Y' terminals on the S-video connector, and assumes that you have configured the card appropriately. This type of converter does not do any kind of signal conversion. - SCART connectors provide 4 video input signals to the TV. In normal use, these are composite plus R,G,B. When using RGB, the composite signal is still present and used to provide syncs. The TV will normally switch automatically between composite and RGB under control of another signal ('fast blanking'). SCART connectors can also be used (with some TVs only) for S-video. SCART to S-video adaptors are purely mechanical adaptors which have no effect on the signals. In this case, the 'Y' signal is fed on the composite pin on the SCART connector, and 'C' on the red pin. There is nothing on the connector itself to switch into S-video mode: it can only be used if the TV has been manually configured to do S-video rather than RGB. Many TVs don't accept S-video at all. - You should be able to tell the difference between a b/w picture due to wrong PAL/NTSC/SECAM selection and a b/w picture due to connecting an S-video output to a composite input. Look at a picture with some areas of solid colour. If it's an S-video 'Y' signal, the vertical edges of coloured areas will be just as sharp as the edges of black/white areas. If it's a composite signal of the wrong type for the TV, the edges of coloured areas should be noticeably fuzzy compared to white areas which will be sharp. You may also be able to see a 'grainy' appearance to areas that should be coloured which is not visible in areas which are supposed to be grey.
