am somewhat limited to inferior application due to the fact that FreeBSD cannot implement JACK. Although a port does exist, it is marked as knackered. I have read many mail ilst posts where people have been asking similar questions, but no joy. The application I really really wish to run on my 5.2.1 box is ardour. It looks like the leading DA studio software availible and reminds me of nuendo (just looking at shots). I am going to try it out on a slackware pc soon (temproarily) and Im guessing I am going to have to use linux to run this app. Just wondered if anyone is working on porting JACK to FreeBSD (currently) before I take this route. Also the linux community have decided to ditch OSS in favour of ALSA. Why was this? was there someting wrong with OSS? If so shoudl teh FreeBSD community look at a new and improved audio system? If I cannot run ardour on FreeBSD, then what apps can I? I have tried audacity, but there are some latency issues here, also editting is limited. If you have ever seen a studio engineer play with a commercial multitrack editor then you will see exactly what I mean. I have looked into using rosegarden, but this requires ALSA. Sweep is a very nice audio program, but it does not multitrack. snd is old fashioned. There must be someone out there doing thier pro audio tasks on FreeBSD, if so Id love to hear from you . Thanks all! I'm supposed to be working on the FreeBSD midi project but a new job and spring fever (and work on usb audio) has distracted me. My mentor intends to write a serial pass-through once I get around to commiting the midi driver. I would like to ask why you want to use a serial port? My understanding of the situaion is that serial ports have to be hacked to get the timming right for midi and most soundcards have midi ports (via the gameport). You can find patches posted for my midi work. I hope you stick around until we complete midi :) --Mat ps. I was under the impression that the MIDI UART (gameport) was not yet supported, at least on most cards. Was I mistaken? That would be great! If so, what would I need to do to use it? Is all the necessary kernel stuff already in place? I tried using my MIDI keyboard under Windows once via the serial port, just as an experiment (back when I still occasionally used Windows), and it worked fine, so I don't expect there should be any serious problems doing the same under FreeBSD. > You can find patches posted for my midi work. Hello Conrad, This is a late nate reply after a work party. > > I was under the impression that the MIDI UART (gameport) was not yet supported, > at least on most cards. Was I mistaken? That would be great! The uarts on gameports are the easiest to support! At the moment I think we support emu10k1(soundblaster), cmi80xx and es1371. The actual url for the patches should be in the archive, I really don't remeber at the moment. > > If so, what would I need to do to use it? Is all the necessary kernel stuff > already in place? (In regards to windows+serial) Cool. I didn't known. At the moment, MIDI and a serial UART just won't work because the code hasn't been written (it has before but we are know in the third generation). Cool, an es1371 just happens to be what I have. > The actual url for the patches should be in the archive, I really > don't remeber at the moment. OK, I'll do a hunt for it. Well, the keyboard (a Yamaha S03) came with a serial driver for Windows. It's not like Windows had intrinsic support for it or anything. I'm sure, given the superior performance of FreeBSD in general, it would work even better here. I'm anxious to try this under FreeBSD; been waiting a *long* time (since the removal of the old Voxware drivers what seems like eons ago). And I don't even have a Windows installation here anymore, threw in the towel with Windows a long time ago. :-) Is there anything I can do to help? I'm pretty handy at coding, myself. :-) -- Conrad Sabatier - "In Unix veritas"
