As you noted in your followup mail, it's actually the mode page headers that are different lengths. In theory the mode page layouts in the scsi_modes file should be correct for 6 or 10 byte commands. > Could someone more knowledgeable about the inner workings of CAM and > SCSI in FreeBSD than I advise how we could go about teaching camcontrol(8) > to fetch and display mode pages in a human-readable manner? > (i.e. without necessarily implementing a new utility right away) Conceptually, I'd rather specify a minimum CDB size rather than a "force 10 byte" flag. That's especially true if we end up doing a global flag. That would go along with the idea in the scsi_mode_{sense,select}_len() and scsi_read_write() functions of having a minimum command size. e.g., with a read or a write, the user might specify a minimum command size of 10, but would actually need a 16 byte CDB to handle the lba or length they requested. Right now, mode sense/select are the only commands directly supported by camcontrol(8) that have different length CDBs. It might make sense to do a flag that would work for more than one command, though, to support something like read capacity or sync cache as well as mode sense and mode select. Let me think on it a bit and see what I can come up with. For now, folks can use your patch to deal with devices like this. > This is necessary in order to extract the geometry for a USB floppy > drive in order that track-by-track format may be implemented; the > FORMAT UNIT command for USB floppy drives requires such behaviour > as per the UFI Specification (usbmass-ufi10.pdf). I'm mostly happy with these, but it's been a long time since I've gone shopping, so I'm in the dark as to what else is out there. Currently I'm putting together a shell/userweb server with about 3000 accounts on it. Disk activity will be fairly random and I expect very little to be cachable. The 2110S is OK, but not really a great performer, and I'm not very thrilled with the cli "raidutil" tool. Money is tight, I'd like to keep the card under $500. Any suggestions? What's new out there? What consensus is there on which drivers are most mature/stable? Should I even think about 3Ware IDE or SATA RAID cards? (yeah, this is -scsi, but if I recall the 3Ware stuff is treated more like a scsi device) Any input is appreciated. Well, for page 0x1b, that'll probably be okay. I hope at some point to put device type information in the mode page database so that we can distinguish between pages with identical numbers that are different for different device types. As for page 0x1c, though, we have a problem. If you look at SPC-3, it is not a per device type page, but rather a general SCSI page (Informational Exceptions Control mode page). My guess is that the USB folks stole a reserved mode page number, and now it is used for something else. In order to make that work, we'll have to come up with a way to have different mode pages with the same number, and then automatically figure out which page format goes with the device we're talking to. The pieces of information we'll need to do that are likely: - device type (direct access, sequential access, CD, etc.) - transport/protocol information (I wouldn't have put this in the list before now, but we'll have to use this or some other similar method to distinguish between UFI devices and everything else.) - inquiry information for vendor-specific mode pages > --- /usr/src/share/misc/scsi_modes Sun Feb 24 05:27:57 2002 > +++ scsi_modes Fri Oct 8 00:26:13 2004 > @@ -291,6 +291,28 @@ > {Reserved} *i4 > } > > +# Removable devices > +0x1b "Removable Block Access Capacities Page" { > + {System Floppy Type Device} t1 > + {Supports Reporting Format Progress} t1 > + {Reserved} *t6 > + {Non CD Optical Device} t1 > + {Single or Multiple LUN Supported} t1 > + {Reserved} *t3 > + {Total Logical Units Supported} t3 > + {Reserved} *i8 > +} > + > +0x1c "Timer and Protect Page" { > + {Reserved} *i1 > + {Reserved} *t4 > + {Inactivity Time Multiplier} t4 > + {Reserved} *t6 > + {Disable Media Access until Power Cycle} t1 > + {Software Write Protect until Power Cycle} t1 > + {Reserved} *i3 > +} > + > # CD-ROM (and CD-R[W]) devices > 0x2a "CD capabilities and mechanical status page" { > {Reserved} *t4 Ken -- Kenneth Merry ken@kdm.org From owner-freebsd-scsi@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Oct 8 16:39:34 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BC74C16A4CE; Fri, 8 Oct 2004 16:39:34 +0000 (GMT) Received: from hub.org (hub.org [200.46.204.220]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8FED943D53; Fri, 8 Oct 2004 16:39:34 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from scrappy@hub.org) Received: from localhost (unknown [200.46.204.144]) by hub.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D554E70DCDF; Fri, 8 Oct 2004 13:39:22 -0300 (ADT) Received: from hub.org ([200.46.204.220]) by localhost (av.hub.org [200.46.204.144]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 81542-03; Fri, 8 Oct 2004 16:39:22 +0000 (GMT) Received: from ganymede.hub.org (blk-222-46-91.eastlink.ca [24.222.46.91]) by hub.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 53F8670DCE6; Fri, 8 Oct 2004 13:39:12 -0300 (ADT) Received: by ganymede.hub.org (Postfix, from userid 1000) id BE8443B3BD; Fri, 8 Oct 2004 13:39:01 -0300 (ADT) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by ganymede.hub.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B96BB3A762; Fri, 8 Oct 2004 13:39:01 -0300 (ADT) Date: Fri, 8 Oct 2004 13:39:01 -0300 (ADT) From: "Marc G. I'm going to do a rebuild/reformat of the server tomorrow, but am curious about the 'active disk' thing ... am I run in guessing that it is because of how I had originally set it up with the hot spare, so even though slot 5 wasn't being used, the controller thought it was?
