What totally confused me was the piece of code that the old patch for f86Events.c put under a #ifndef __sparc64__ (revision 3.156 in XFree). I now see what I missed, in revision 3.147 this was moved inside the code that's skipped if the keyboard is a Sun keyboard (and in case the code that's now under the #if defined(__sparc__) && defined(__linux__) is compiled in). So my patch was right and additionally the #ifndef __sparc64__ added in 3.156 can be removed again. Thanks for your help! The last time I tried (5.1-R, and I read that the situation has not improved much with either 5.2 or 5.2.1), there was no keyboard/mouse/floppy support and you had to install FreeBSD using a serial console. Has that (or will that) change with 5.3-RELEASE/STABLE? I would like to use one of the Blade 100s as a dedicated workstation, and if 5.3-R works fine, I'll buy a nice LCD display for it. Anyone care to shed some light on this? P.S. Please CC me a reply, since I'm not subscribed to the list. This has an hme(4) attached to it but when I try to test in OFW I get some error about no cable connection. I've checked the cable and it's ok (the cable is working with onboard netcard under NetBSD). Should I do some "magic" in OFW in order to get it to work? I've been told the card worked before I've got it. Thanks, G. I'll look into why it's trying to boot the wrong thing and I'll do a test of a bootonly CD to make it functional but in the meantime I'd suggest you switch to using a miniinst CD for the install. Even when this problem with it booting the wrong kernel gets fixed I don't think you can use the bootonly CD for doing an install with. --=20 Ken Smith - From there to here, from here to | kensmith@cse.buffalo.edu there, funny things are everywhere. | - Theodore Geisel | From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Sep 16 13:50:25 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 53FA816A4D0 for ; Thu, 16 Sep 2004 13:50:25 +0000 (GMT) Received: from vhost109.his.com (vhost109.his.com [216.194.225.101]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C07C543D48 for ; Thu, 16 Sep 2004 13:50:16 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from brad@stop.mail-abuse.org) Received: from [10.0.1.3] (localhost.his.com [127.0.0.1]) by vhost109.his.com (8.12.11/8.12.3) with ESMTP id i8GDoEoc007561 for ; Thu, 16 Sep 2004 09:50:15 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from brad@stop.mail-abuse.org) Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Sender: bs663385@127.0.0.1 Message-Id: Date: Thu, 16 Sep 2004 15:49:35 +0200 To: FreeBSD SPARC64 Mailing List From: Brad Knowles Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" ; format="flowed" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Subject: Hardware for sale? Please keep in mind that the seller is interested primarily in selling the whole lot, so it would be best if all interested parties could pool their money so that we could buy the whole thing ourselves, and sell or donate any excess. The hardware is mostly U5s and Blade 100s/150s, with some other various excess bits. Last I spoke to him, the best offer he had for the lot was 1200 UKP, but that number may have gone up since then. Checking on eBay, Blade 100s are selling for $500-1000, while Blade 150s are selling for $1000-1500. However, U5s seem to be going for around $50. It shouldn't take too many people getting together and putting money into the pot for the more expensive hardware before we could afford to buy the whole lot. If you were to put in money, you'd need to cover both the cost of the hardware itself, as well as shipping, handling, import duties, taxes, etc.... If you're interested in any of this stuff, please let me know, especially how much you'd be willing/able to put into the pot up front, so that we could arrange a suitable group purchase. I've already got one person who has indicated interest in a Blade 100, another who wants an U5, and I am personally interested in putting together as many U5s as I can (I'm trying to get experience building clusters). But three people isn't going to do it -- We need more. And this stuff is likely to disappear quickly, so please get back to me as soon as you can. If you have the same problem booting miniinst as you had booting the bootonly CD then try: boot cdrom /boot/kernel/kernel to see if that helps. It is not a problem on UP machines or on SMP machines that 'printf' in a kernel thread before the second CPU is started. Is "openfirmware" SMP capable? Can "openfirmware" be executed on CPUs other than CPU #0? This kills any SMP debugging for me because I use printf's frequently in a multi-threaded environment. cd -- ___________________________________________________________ Sign-up for Ads Free at Mail.com http://promo.mail.com/adsfreejump.htm From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Sep 17 18:18:51 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3958216A4CE for ; Fri, 17 Sep 2004 18:18:51 +0000 (GMT) Received: from newtrinity.zeist.de (newtrinity.zeist.de [217.24.217.8]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 99ECD43D1F for ; Fri, 17 Sep 2004 18:18:50 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from marius@newtrinity.zeist.de) Received: from newtrinity.zeist.de (localhost [127.0.0.1]) i8HIIj1a049079 for ; Fri, 17 Sep 2004 20:18:49 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from marius@newtrinity.zeist.de) Received: (from marius@localhost) by newtrinity.zeist.de (8.12.10/8.12.10/Submit) id i8HIIdS9049078 for freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org; Fri, 17 Sep 2004 20:18:39 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from marius) Date: Fri, 17 Sep 2004 20:18:39 +0200 From: Marius Strobl To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20040917201839.A47291@newtrinity.zeist.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5.1i X-AntiVirus: checked by AntiVir Milter 1.1-beta; AVE 6.27.0.10; VDF 6.27.0.65 (host: newtrinity.zeist.de) Subject: Testers for Netra X1 RTC driver wanted X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 17 Sep 2004 18:18:51 -0000 While going through some OFW device tree dumps lately I noticed that FreeBSD doesn't support the time of day clock on Netra X1 and probably other models without an EBus, yet. Could those with such models please give a driver for the 'rtc' device a try? For testing you'll need a 5.3-beta or 6.0-current. If you want to try to get it working on an older version see below. How to test: - get the patch from: http://alchemy.franken.de/~marius/sparc64_rtc.diff_test - `cd /path/to/sys` - `mkdir dev/mc146818` - `patch < /path/to/sparc64_rtc.diff_test` - add 'device "mc146818"' and 'device rtc' to your kernel config file, like the patch does for the sparc64 GENERIC - build and install the kernel (don't forget to run config(8) and `make depend` when using an existing build dir) - turn of ntpdate(8) or whatever you used as a workaround - reboot with the new kernel - look at /var/run/dmesg.boot; did a rtc0 successfully attach? if not you can stop here... - if yes, send me the lines in dmesg.boot talking about 'rega' and 'regb' - was there a line in dmesg.boot saying "dow invalid"? if yes, send me that line - look at the output of `date`; if the date in the clock was ever set it should still be reasonable; in any case tell me what OS the machine was running before FreeBSD - set the current date via date(1) or `ntpdate -b ` - reboot with the new kernel again - look at the output of `date` again, is it ok? If you are using a FreeBSD older than 5.3-beta you can try the following: - after applying the patch open sys/sparc64/isa/rtc.c - find the line '#include ' and remove it - find the line with 'ofw_bus_get_node' and replace this with 'ofw_pci_get_node' - save the changed rtc.c - if patching sys/conf/files or sys/conf/files.sparc64 failed take a look at the patch and do the changes manually, should be fairly easy - proceede like above If the kernel compiles the driver should work...or not... Hello, I like many other out there have a Sun system known as a Cobalt. = Mines a Cobalt XTR. Its an x86 Platform mines (1ghz PIII dual capable). = Currently there are no BSD Platforms which will install on it. You can = however install Linux Platforms, such RedHat/Slack/Gen ect ect. after = you flash the BIOS with an after marker Flash available from Sourceforge = http://sourceforge.net/projects/cobalt-rom . The current problem at had = with all of the Cobalt systems is that there is no Standard bios for it, = allowing load from a MBR. Even though the ROM data from Sun and from = Sourceforge is all open source. I know you at FreeBSD have put a lot of = time in to the Sparc versions of BSD. But, is there any chance you could = lend a helpful hand to the few of us people with Cobalts that haven't = given up on them, and maybe give the people who have a reason to pull = them out of the closet? I'm not a asm or C programmer or I'd help. :( = But I'd be willing to do anything to help.
