I'm running 5.2.1 systems with a vinum mirrored swap this way: - prepare a vinum mirrored drive - create an UFS filesystem on it - create a large file of ~90% of the file systems size - swap to that There is a performance penalty when swapping to plain files instead of a dedicated disk, but IMHO a properly sized system should rarely swap at all. I am not a RAID expert, but here are just a few thoughts: 1. My chipset is hpt374 not 372! 2. Is it acctually possible to BUILD/CONFIGURE/ETC RAID arrays in the card's BIOS if the RAID is software implemented in the driver? I do this while the computer is booting by entering the card's setup thus not using the OS at all! 3. I believe that if the RAID was software I'd notice that big file transfers would have taken more cpu time. My tests showed insignificant cpu load when copying large files! Anyway I still may be wrong :) The fact is that I like this card. It has a reasonable price and so far it is rock solid under FreeBSD 4.x. There is one line in your sample program which I can't understand. What's the purpose (question for you) and actual action (question for fs gurus) of the following line: device=/dev/da1s1e ... fsync "$device" & ??? I thought fsync() call is for regular files, not for special ones, does it still stand? When I remove this line or replace it with sync & crash no more happens. So, can we call it "foot-shooting"? Of course, bug should be fixed if possible, but it seems that only root can fsync device, so the main question, can regular user activity create similar conditions (again question for fs gurus)? I have just got some binary executables for a piece of software for which no source code is available (blast.wustl.edu). The executables seem to have been made on FreeBSD-5. I am running FreeBSD-4.9 (RELENG_4_9) and see this error when trying to run any of the provided binaries: /usr/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: Shared object "libc_r.so.5" not found A search in Google turned up several mentions to a new? feature of FreeBSD-5 that has? been merged in FreeBSD-4-(STABLE?). They mention some libmap.conf(5) mappings and some note to UPDATING that is missing in my UPDATING file. Also, I don't have any libmap.conf file, and I can't find any man page for libmap.conf(5). My question is: is this only for -STABLE? -CURRENT? Is there something I can do to run the software without having to update to -CURRENT or -STABLE? If there is no trivial solution, I can ask the authors to provide binaries for FreeBSD-4 ... but I thought of asking here first. A straight boot hangs. If I break the boot at the 'hit any key message', the system boots fine. If I remove the NIC, a 3Com Megahertz card, model 3XXE589ET, the system boots fine. Thinking this was an irq 5 problem, I have configured the kernel to include 'device pcm' and loaded the correct sound driver in /boot/loader.conf. After all this the system still hangs during boot if the card is in. The card uses the ep driver. With the old kernel, adding pccard_enable="YES" did not change any of the above. That the background now the questions: 1) Is there any place I can go to figure out how to add an entry to pccard.conf from the dumpcis output? 2) Are there design reasons that pccardd can find the card in /etc/defaults/pccard.conf and the regular boot process does not? I also tried removing irq 5 from the pool of dynamically assigned irq's. Either I did that incorrectly or that too had no effect. Interrupting the boot process at the loader interface makes everything work (as does removing the card). I do not know enough about the boot process to make use of that information. The system (pc and NIC) all works in current, however I could not get XFree86 running and could not work around that problem at all as it was (effectively) a hard stop in the X server with no logging done at all. I am happy to supply more information. _____ Douglas Denault http://www.safeport.com doug@safeport.com Voice: 301-469-8766 Fax: 301-469-0601 From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 18 16:12:14 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BF16C16A516 for ; Tue, 18 May 2004 16:12:11 -0700 (PDT) Received: from mta7.pltn13.pbi.net (mta7.pltn13.pbi.net [64.164.98.8]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 71E1344036 for ; Tue, 18 May 2004 15:47:59 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from kris@obsecurity.org) Received: from obsecurity.dyndns.org (4874a51c285cd9737cd19affafa72818@adsl-67-115-73-128.dsl.lsan03.pacbell.net [67.115.73.128])i4IM7wjU023989; Tue, 18 May 2004 15:07:58 -0700 (PDT) Received: by obsecurity.dyndns.org (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 746E854947; Tue, 18 May 2004 15:07:57 -0700 (PDT) Date: Tue, 18 May 2004 15:07:57 -0700 From: Kris Kennaway To: Fernan Aguero , FreeBSD STABLE Message-ID: <20040518220757.GA38546@xor.obsecurity.org> References: <20040518180616.GG99674@iib.unsam.edu.ar> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="UugvWAfsgieZRqgk" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20040518180616.GG99674@iib.unsam.edu.ar> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i Subject: Re: Shared object "libc_r.so.5" not found X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 18 May 2004 23:12:15 -0000 --UugvWAfsgieZRqgk Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On Tue, May 18, 2004 at 03:06:16PM -0300, Fernan Aguero wrote: > Hi! >=20 > I have just got some binary executables for a piece of software > for which no source code is available (blast.wustl.edu). > The executables seem to have been made on FreeBSD-5.=20 >=20 > I am running FreeBSD-4.9 (RELENG_4_9) and see this error when trying to > run any of the provided binaries: > /usr/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: Shared object "libc_r.so.5" not found As you say above, this is a 5.x binary, and you cannot run it on 4.x Kris --UugvWAfsgieZRqgk Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFAqok8Wry0BWjoQKURAkaXAKChrlzD3nddCvRtPUr5g7FDYjtBQACgjCz8 gCVzdJt8gA0frL/UxGVgE7w= =aGSt -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --UugvWAfsgieZRqgk-- From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 18 16:12:29 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 60FD916A5BF for ; Tue, 18 May 2004 16:12:21 -0700 (PDT) Received: from odin.ac.hmc.edu (Odin.AC.HMC.Edu [134.173.32.75]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 58293440BF for ; Tue, 18 May 2004 13:31:12 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from brdavis@odin.ac.hmc.edu) Received: from odin.ac.hmc.edu (IDENT:brdavis@localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by odin.ac.hmc.edu (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id i4IKRGs0027033; Tue, 18 May 2004 13:27:16 -0700 Received: (from brdavis@localhost) by odin.ac.hmc.edu (8.12.10/8.12.3/Submit) id i4IKRGJT027032; Tue, 18 May 2004 13:27:16 -0700 Date: Tue, 18 May 2004 13:27:16 -0700 From: Brooks Davis To: Fernan Aguero , FreeBSD STABLE Message-ID: <20040518202716.GA25295@Odin.AC.HMC.Edu> References: <20040518180616.GG99674@iib.unsam.edu.ar> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="sdtB3X0nJg68CQEu" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20040518180616.GG99674@iib.unsam.edu.ar> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.4i Subject: Re: Shared object "libc_r.so.5" not found X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 18 May 2004 23:12:31 -0000 --sdtB3X0nJg68CQEu Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On Tue, May 18, 2004 at 03:06:16PM -0300, Fernan Aguero wrote: > Hi! >=20 > I have just got some binary executables for a piece of software > for which no source code is available (blast.wustl.edu). > The executables seem to have been made on FreeBSD-5.=20 >=20 > I am running FreeBSD-4.9 (RELENG_4_9) and see this error when trying to > run any of the provided binaries: > /usr/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: Shared object "libc_r.so.5" not found >=20 > A search in Google turned up several mentions to a new? > feature of FreeBSD-5 that has? been merged in > FreeBSD-4-(STABLE?). I made it after the questions in freebsd= -net@ and newsgroup fido7.ru.unix.bsd from Alexander Lunyov. Actually the problem= is that the file dev.db needs to be rebuilt more frequently than just during t= he startup (from /etc/rc). The changes in the /dev are making through the MAKEDEV. This is the standard de facto which is using by the thrird-party developers (what I've seen seve= ral times were patches to MAKEDEV and only then recomendation for _advanced_ us= ers how to do the same manually with mknod). Unfortunatelly sometimes happe= ns that people first rebbot the machine and _then_ run MAKEDEV. With some small probability the dev.db then remains in the wrong state and thus devname() a= nd ttyname() start returning wrong values. The simplest way to reduce the probability of this trouble is to rebuid dev= =2Edb =66rom MAKEDEV, and that what I am proposing in that PR. Also would be nice= to add the reference to dev_mkdb(8) at the end of MAKEDEV(8). -- Sincerely, Alex Semenyaka From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 18 19:30:28 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4A12716A4CE for ; Tue, 18 May 2004 19:30:28 -0700 (PDT) Received: from cashmere.blitzed.org (cashmere.blitzed.org [82.195.232.22]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DBB0043D39 for ; Tue, 18 May 2004 19:30:27 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from andy@freebsdwiki.org) Received: by cashmere.blitzed.org (Postfix, from userid 10000) id 40205112AEC; Wed, 19 May 2004 02:30:26 +0000 (GMT) Date: Wed, 19 May 2004 02:30:26 +0000 From: Andy Smith To: FreeBSD STABLE Message-ID: <20040519023025.GM457@cashmere.blitzed.org> Mail-Followup-To: FreeBSD STABLE Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="FX8H79VVjfzinewO" Content-Disposition: inline X-Uptime: 9 days X-URL: http://freebsdwiki.org/User:Andy User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.6i Subject: Which resource am I running out of here? Up until now I have been telling this application to limit itself to 1024 file descriptors at once, but today I thought I would let it rip and increase it to 4096. When I did this, I started noticing errors in other applications on the same machine, such as postfix: 9905D27F28 4026 Tue May 18 23:53:55 mark@example.org (connect to mail.example.com[67.15.16.50]: Can't assign requested addr= ess) kari@example.com Also emulating a HTTP connection: $ telnet babylon.otherwize.co.uk 80 Trying 212.13.198.54... telnet: connect to address 212.13.198.54: Can't assign requested address So I'm thinking, ah, file descriptor limit. I know the system's FD limit can be queried with pstat -T, but: $ pstat -T 4614/12328 files 45M/2047M swap space seems like there is plenty of room there. The ulimit -a for the user the application runs under shows that it has a hard limit of some 11000 FDs as well. So it's not FDs. Could someone point me in the right direction as to what resource I might be running out of here? If you could let me know how to list the current usage of that resource, and how to increase it in future, that would also be very useful, but any assistance would be appreciated. --=20 http://freebsdwiki.org/ - Encrypted mail welcome - keyid 0xBF15490B --FX8H79VVjfzinewO Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFAqsbBIJm2TL8VSQsRAjDFAJ9Nzk1/rnIOr6z87JIeVtVoIpK3NgCgpoA6 Nl608pb2632ALFAywjB3U7Q= =uRdy -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --FX8H79VVjfzinewO-- From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 18 19:45:01 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 60F7316A4CE for ; Tue, 18 May 2004 19:45:01 -0700 (PDT) Received: from alcanet.com.au (mail2.alcanet.com.au [203.62.196.17]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9C50943D5A for ; Tue, 18 May 2004 19:44:57 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from peter.jeremy@alcatel.com.au) Received: from sydsmtp02.alcatel.com.au (IDENT:root@localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1])i4J00liL020085; Wed, 19 May 2004 10:00:48 +1000 Received: from gsmx07.alcatel.com.au ([139.188.20.247]) by sydsmtp02.alcatel.com.au (Lotus Domino Release 5.0.12) with ESMTP id 2004051910004639:20015 ; Wed, 19 May 2004 10:00:46 +1000 Received: from gsmx07.alcatel.com.au (localhost [127.0.0.1]) i4J00kmZ079165; Wed, 19 May 2004 10:00:46 +1000 (EST) (envelope-from peter.jeremy@alcatel.com.au) Received: (from pjeremy@localhost) by gsmx07.alcatel.com.au (8.12.9p2/8.12.9/Submit) id i4J00iKs079164; Wed, 19 May 2004 10:00:44 +1000 (EST) (envelope-from peter.jeremy@alcatel.com.au) Date: Wed, 19 May 2004 10:00:43 +1000 From: Peter Jeremy To: Lefteris Tsintjelis Message-ID: <20040519000043.GA79139@gsmx07.alcatel.com.au> Mail-Followup-To: Lefteris Tsintjelis , stable@freebsd.org References: <40A0C3FC.2CDCA39D@ene.asda.gr> <20040511211714.GO95736@gsmx07.alcatel.com.au> <40A2E741.40ABFD0E@ene.asda.gr> Mime-Version: 1.0 In-Reply-To: <40A2E741.40ABFD0E@ene.asda.gr> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2i X-MIMETrack: Itemize by SMTP Server on SYDSMTP02/AlcatelAustralia(Release 5.0.12 |February 13, 2003) at 19/05/2004 10:00:46 AM,|February 13, 2003) at 19/05/2004 10:00:48 AM, Serialize complete at 19/05/2004 10:00:48 AM Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline cc: stable@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Digiboard PCI Xem driver X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 19 May 2004 02:45:01 -0000 On 2004-May-13 06:10:57 +0300, Lefteris Tsintjelis wrote: >Peter Jeremy wrote: > >> "struct thread"s back to "struct proc", fix the cdevsw initialisation >> and change the kld load path). Within last few days, I encountered two hangs of a system command, that I was unable to resolve. I could not kill the command, even a 'kill -9' did not work. 1. I had a 2.5 Gb disk mounted on /home/software. As root, I overloaded the filesystem, with negative percentage left on the device (from df command). So as root, I did a 'rm -rf' in /home/software, followed by a 'df -h'. But the df command gave no response and became unkillable by any means (ctrl-C, kill -9 ). Using 'ps', I found the df command in the 'sbwait' state. 2. I had a usb device mounted as /dev/da0s1 on /mnt. Mounting (as root) went all well, but when I unmounted it, as root, the umount command hanged, again the umount command was in sbwait state. In this case it was even worse: when I killed the xterminal where the umount command was hanging, the whole system froze. Only power off/on helped me out here. I don't know what happened; don't know how to further investigate this. Has somebody else similar experiences? Is stability going down for Stable kernel? Regards, Rob. I tried a few things and even tried a fresh new installation of -current with a couple of different results but there seems to be a problem with the driver. The behavior of the driver was very similar with -stable as well as with -current. -stable) when compiled in the kernel, kernel crashed on boot. when compiled as a module I got the following error: # kldload digi_Xem # kldload digi digi0 mem 0xe1800000-0xe1bfffff irq 10 at device 11.0 on pci0 . ( and about 5-10 seconds later on ) ... digi0: Cannot init without BIOS Seems that it can not load the BIOS into the card. -current) (5.2.1) had the same problem. Kernel crashed while booting with a very similar error with -stable but came up with a debug prompt. How can I help debug this one? Can anyone please advise? One said it might be mbufs, but netstat doesn't really confirm: $ netstat -m 139/688/26624 mbufs in use (current/peak/max): 135 mbufs allocated to data 2 mbufs allocated to ancillary data 2 mbufs allocated to socket names and addresses 86/370/6656 mbuf clusters in use (current/peak/max) 912 Kbytes allocated to network (4% of mb_map in use) 0 requests for memory denied 0 requests for memory delayed 0 calls to protocol drain routines Another suggested I was running out of ephemeral ports: $ sysctl -a | grep portrange net.inet.ip.portrange.lowfirst: 1023 net.inet.ip.portrange.lowlast: 600 net.inet.ip.portrange.first: 1024 net.inet.ip.portrange.last: 5000 net.inet.ip.portrange.hifirst: 49152 net.inet.ip.portrange.hilast: 65535 If my application is using first -> last then I can this would be quite likely: I'm opening over 4000 TCP connections at once. But I thought it used hifirst -> hilast. I also increased kern.ipc.somaxconn from 128 to 1024 but this did not appear to help. Are there any other resource limits which people think I should be changing? The connections are very short-lived, perhaps no more than 30 seconds each, and hardly any data goes over them. Okay, while writing this email I used lsof to see what TCP conections my app had. They do all seem to have source ports within the first -> last range. $ sudo sysctl net.inet.ip.portrange.last=3D20000 net.inet.ip.portrange.last: 5000 -> 20000 seem to have removed my problem. I saw a somewhat related discussion last March on "umass panic...", where USB VIA chipsets were considered to be troublesome: http://www.mail-archive.com/freebsd-stable@freebsd.org/msg60471.html I also have VIA chipsets, but slighltly different problems. It must be a FreeBSD problem, since the USB port worked just fine when previously Windows/XP was installed on this computer. (I also have tested it on another computer with Intel USB chips, and there things work flawlessly!). Boot up says (see below for full dmesg output): uhci0: port 0xc400-0xc41f irq 10 at device 7.2 on pci0 usb0: on uhci0 usb0: USB revision 1.0 uhub0: VIA UHCI root hub, class 9/0, rev 1.00/1.00, addr 1 uhub0: 2 ports with 2 removable, self powered And when pluging in the storage device: umass0: vendor 0x090a product 0x1001, rev 1.10/1.00, addr 2 umass0: Get Max Lun not supported (TIMEOUT) da0 at umass-sim0 bus 0 target 0 lun 0 da0: Removable Direct Access SCSI-0 device da0: 650KB/s transfers da0: 62MB (127945 512 byte sectors: 64H 32S/T 62C) Mounting this device with "mount_msdos /dev/da0s1 /mnt" is okay. The umass filesystem is there. Problems start when unmounting it. The umount command will hang and eventually the whole system will hang. Power off/on is only what helps then. Any ideas how to deal with this? Regards, Rob. Full dmesg output: Copyright (c) 1992-2004 The FreeBSD Project.
