The -s switch is documented in the mount_cd9660 man page. There are no examples that are specific to DVD's in the man page however. There are no PR's for this issue that I can find. It is odd though, I can't be the first person to ever mount a data DVD. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. So adding the suggested line, in that way, is not a good solution. Could you please look if your data DVD is correctly closed or written in multisession strategy? It uses special groupings called ``facility'' and ``level''. IPMON in -Ds mode uses local0 as the ``facility'' name. All IPMON logged data goes to local0. The following levels can be used to further segregate the logged data if desired: LOG_INFO - packets logged using the "log" keyword as the action rather than pass or block. LOG_NOTICE - packets logged which are also passed LOG_WARNING - packets logged which are also blocked LOG_ERR - packets which have been logged and which can be considered short To setup IPFILTER to log all data to /var/log/ipfilter.log, you will need to create the file. The following command will do that: # touch /var/log/ipfilter.log The syslog function is controlled by definition statements in the /etc/syslog.conf file. The syslog.conf file offers considerable flexibility in how syslog will deal with system messages issued by software applications like IPF. Add the following statement to /etc/syslog.conf: local0.* /var/log/ipfilter.log The local0.* means to write all the logged messages to the coded file location. To activate the changes to /etc/syslog.conf you can reboot or bump the syslog task into re-reading /etc/syslog.conf by running /etc/rc.d/syslogd reload (killall -HUP syslogd in FreeBSD 4.X). Do not forget to change /etc/newsyslog.conf to rotate the new log you just created above. **** To read as this ***** 24.5.7 IPMON Logging Syslogd uses its own special method for segregation of log data. Having said that, I think there is a lot to be gained by improving the documentation (including more attention to specifications (pre and post-facto) of the freebsd source. It is clean and easy to follow, and it contains at least as much probably more, documentation then average, but not nearly enough. More specification means more contributers, quicker contributions, improved ability to audit other's code, fewer bugs, and easier smoother redesigns. Frankly I don't know of any programmer who likes to document their code as much as they like writing it, and most (myself included most of the time) just like to add a comment here or there that begrudgingly gives a nod to the concept of documentation and then move on to the more interesting part about seeing results. This behavior isn't really going to change, so I'm not going to suggest that it does. ((btw all this could be made mute if there is some large resource for this sort of information that I haven't come across.)) The idea I have, though admittedly it is somewhat abstract at the moment, is for putting a formal system in place to make documenting the source easier for both the developers who are the primary contributers to a specific piece of code as well as other interested in enhancing the specification or documentation. "All right", your saying, "the guy just basically described what is already in place". I'm thinking about going beyond what is already in place, and doing so for the source code specifically, not as much the userland documentation which, as far as I can see, are doing just fine as things are. I'm thinking about a system that goes beyond incline code comments, allowing things like embedded graphs, diagrams, images, etc, hyperlinking, and so forth, and allowing for more verbose code documentation without fear of detracting from the readability of the functional code (by setting it awash with a flood of incline commentation). It'd also have the advantage of being a seperate project/package then the source itself, so not everyone who wishes to build world need bother with downloading it. Actions speak louder then words, but, as I'm going to be somewhat slow implementing a prototype, and as a newb freebsd hacker, i'm likely to get it all wrong, miss the point entirely, or otherwise waist my time if I don't at least get some feedback. What I'm thinking is: *Documents in the source documentation database are associated with either files or directories in /usr/src. *Document format supports embedded objects, hyper-links to other documentation objects, url's, emails, man pages, code source, or whatever else you can think that would be useful *there be an agreed upon set of formal specification languages and documentation-related tools and utilities (as there is already, but extended for this purpose), as well as a repository of freebsd specific extensions to those languages and tools. Of course, one is free to document in whatever way they think conveys the information best, but there should be some commonalities available. *people could add forum style comments to any given document, probably through a web interface. This way people could easily raise issues, make requests, point out flaws, or most importantly, record little tidbits of wisdom they have gained about the subject through experience. One "forum" associated with each documentation object. _derek (This message is paraphrased from an even longer post I made on -hackers a few days ago). Here goes... The system would be very wiki-like, but it would have explicit support for binding pages to arbitrary path names in FreeBSD (and maybe some other name spaces, as well). The system would allow some of its pages to be mechanically created, rather than hand-edited. This would allow interested folks to write scripts which grovel over the tree and produce pages, diagrams, etc. FWIW, I recently created a set of Perl document mechanization scripts for a software project: http://www.slac.stanford.edu/exp/glast/flight/web/e_tut/docs.shtml http://www.slac.stanford.edu/exp/glast/flight/web/e_tut/doc_mech.shtml -r -- email: rdm@cfcl.com; phone: +1 650-873-7841 http://www.cfcl.com - Canta Forda Computer Laboratory http://www.cfcl.com/Meta - The FreeBSD Browser, Meta Project, etc. http://www.ptf.com/dossier - Prime Time Freeware's DOSSIER series From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Apr 5 16:46:03 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B54B316A4CE; Tue, 5 Apr 2005 16:46:03 +0000 (GMT) Received: from vsmtp14.tin.it (vsmtp14.tin.it [212.216.176.118]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E4DC843D41; Tue, 5 Apr 2005 16:46:02 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from molter@tin.it) Received: from gattaccio.codalunga (82.122.251.157) by vsmtp14.tin.it (7.0.027) (authenticated as molter@tin.it) id 4227B87800D392B0; Tue, 5 Apr 2005 18:45:33 +0200 Received: by gattaccio.codalunga (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 70567C640; Tue, 5 Apr 2005 18:44:23 +0200 (CEST) Date: Tue, 5 Apr 2005 18:44:23 +0200 From: Marco Molteni To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Message-Id: <20050405184423.52b38c0b.molter@tin.it> X-Mailer: Sylpheed version 1.0.3 (GTK+ 1.2.10; i386-portbld-freebsd6.0) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: Roland Smith cc: ws+freebsd-gnats-submit@au.dyndns.ws cc: ale@FreeBSD.org Subject: Easy PR to close: manpage for devfs.conf, devfs.rules X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 05 Apr 2005 16:46:03 -0000 Hi, if you look at http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=63808, you will see that in the follow-up, Roland Smith has been so kind to provide man pages for devfs.conf, devfs.rules. Recently, I was trying to get some legacy Linux programs running on my FreeBSD 5.4-PRERELEASE system. I could get some to work, but not others. A friend indicated that the programs that weren't working required the /proc filesystem to get command line arguments. After a fair amount of hunting around on the web, I found that by doing a mount_linprocfs -o rw linprocfs /compat/linux/proc/ They worked like a charm. I tried to find in the Handbook where I had missed this, and could not. The only documentation that I could find was in a Security Advisory from December, http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-security-notifications/2004-December/000037.html, that said: In its default configuration, FreeBSD 5.x does not utilize procfs(5) or linprocfs(5) and will therefore be unaffected by this vulnerability unless the configuration is changed. I'm writing to suggest that you add something about how FreeBSD 5.x doesn't enable any proc filesystem stuff (procfs or linprocfs), and that users may need to enable the Linux /proc filesystem from the command line as root via the above mount_linprocfs command, or show how it can be added to /etc/fstab. I'd write a section for the Handbook myself, but I realize I don't actually know the mysteries of the differences between procfs and linprocfs to write something authoritative. I hope this helps improve the handbook. Thanks again. -- Ross From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Apr 5 19:59:13 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BE2B616A4CE for ; Tue, 5 Apr 2005 19:59:13 +0000 (GMT) Received: from sccmmhc91.asp.att.net (sccmmhc91.asp.att.net [204.127.203.211]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 60A0643D3F for ; Tue, 5 Apr 2005 19:59:13 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from josh@tcbug.org) Received: from twinmp (12-218-21-193.client.mchsi.com[12.218.21.193]) by sccmmhc91.asp.att.net (sccmmhc91) with ESMTP id <20050405195922m9100q03kre>; Tue, 5 Apr 2005 19:59:22 +0000 From: Josh Paetzel To: doc@freebsd.org Date: Tue, 5 Apr 2005 14:59:10 -0500 User-Agent: KMail/1.7 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Message-Id: <200504051459.10874.josh@tcbug.org> Subject: /etc/defaults/devfs.rules X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 05 Apr 2005 19:59:13 -0000 The manpage for devfs doesn't have a FILES section which lists /etc/defaults/devfs.rules or /etc/devfs.rules I'm not sure what control or influence the docproj has over manpages...is this something I can patch? -- Thanks, Josh Paetzel From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Apr 5 20:03:53 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E26EA16A516 for ; Tue, 5 Apr 2005 20:03:53 +0000 (GMT) Received: from fed1rmmtao12.cox.net (fed1rmmtao12.cox.net [68.230.241.27]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 99F4243D5D for ; Tue, 5 Apr 2005 20:03:53 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jcamou@opensea.mephis.org) Received: from opensea.mephis.org ([68.0.141.123]) by fed1rmmtao12.cox.net (InterMail vM.6.01.04.00 201-2131-118-20041027) with ESMTP <20050405200353.SEXC13819.fed1rmmtao12.cox.net@opensea.mephis.org>; Tue, 5 Apr 2005 16:03:53 -0400 Received: from opensea.mephis.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by opensea.mephis.org (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j35K5CmW067464; Tue, 5 Apr 2005 13:05:13 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from jcamou@opensea.mephis.org) Received: (from jcamou@localhost) by opensea.mephis.org (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id j35K5CZC067463; Tue, 5 Apr 2005 13:05:12 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from jcamou) Date: Tue, 5 Apr 2005 13:05:11 -0700 From: "Jesus R. There are places where it's called /etc/ppp/ppp.conf 1.2.1.3.1 PPP and Static IP Addresses You will need to edit the /etc/ppp/ppp.conf configuration file. It should look similar to the example below. Other places it's simply referred to as ppp.conf Line 6 & 7: The dial string. User PPP uses an expect-send syntax similar to the chat(8) program. This patch > makes the usage "uniform" The current usage in the Handbook is not inconsistent. In the mentioned chapter the location of configuration files is clearly stated: "Both ppp and pppd (the kernel level implementation of PPP) use the configuration files located in the /etc/ppp directory." Then the 1st time ppp.conf is mentioned we have: "You will need to edit the /etc/ppp/ppp.conf configuration file." The following instances use both ppp.conf and /etc/ppp/ppp.conf, in the same way we do for rc.conf and /etc/rc.conf, sendmail.cf, GENERIC, and thousand of files. Since the reader must read the beginning of the section with important and "mandatory" explanations, he will know where is located ppp.conf If the reader starts to read a section from the middle of it, we cannot help... I will evev add that having full path often leads to a "bloated" text. Perhaps it was added to the document between 5.3 and 5.4 (come to think of it, a number of manual pages for sound drivers were added fairly recently).
