Well, to be honest, I was planning to port the first milestone that will have our submitted patches merged. If that seems to take forever though and we can't use eclipse at all with a current gnome, I'll certainly reconsider. >>but I would feel safer if we could preserve the cairo 0.4 libraries in /usr/local/lib/compat >>during the upgarde, as you suggested. > > > Another issue with eclipse 3.1 (built on gnome-2.10) and gnome-2.12: > with default gnome-2.12 skin (clear-look) it is impossible to see > current item in menu (it has gray foreground and gray background). > Probably it is just problem of building eclipse with recent gnome. Interesting, I see. I'll do the upgrade to gnome 2.12 to have a first-hand experience, when I get some free time (which is rather scarce these weeks). I sent the following message to `comp.unix.bsd.freebsd.misc' a few days ago, but didn't receive any replies. So now I'm sending my question to you. Thanks for any help you can offer. --- Eric.] I'm using Eclipse 3.1 from the FreeBSD ports collection, running on FreeBSD 4.11-STABLE. On occasion I get the following error, printed to the terminal from which Eclipse is run: Unhandled event loop exception Reason: No more handles (java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no swt-mozilla-gtk-3138 in java.library.path) Along with this comes a dialog box with an ominous warning that I should exit the workbench. But if I continue on, Eclipse seems to be fine. Searching around, I found that there are a bunch of similarly named libraries within the `org.eclipse.swt.gtk.freebsd.x86' plug-in: libswt-atk-gtk-3138.so libswt-awt-gtk-3138.so libswt-cairo-gtk-3138.so libswt-gnome-gtk-3138.so libswt-gtk-3138.so libswt-pi-gtk-3138.so ...but not the library that Eclipse is apparently looking for. My question is, is the port missing this library, or is my installation of Eclipse broken in some mysterious way? There were no apparently relevant errors during the installtion of the port. Thanks for any help! --- Eric. PS --- Here are the awful details of the error. Here is a reliable way to get the error: Install the Eclipse TPTP 4.0.0 feature by downloading it from `eclipse.org'. Then, run the workbench and select "Workbench->Preferences". In the preferences dialog box, select "Java->Review Preferences". Boom! >From the error backtrace, one can see that the reference to the `swt-mozilla-gtk' library is found in class `org.eclipse.swt.browser.Browser', which is part of the above-mentioned plug-in. Finally, below is the backtrace in Eclipse's log: !ENTRY org.eclipse.ui 4 0 2005-09-16 17:01:22.55 !MESSAGE No more handles (java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no swt-mozilla-gtk-3138 in If you have firefox installed, you could define WITH_MOZILLA=firefox and build eclipse. This should create the libswt-mozilla-gtk-3139.so library. The default build expects to find mozilla installed and if not, it installs it for you. Another thought came to me though, how do you start eclipse? You are supposed to use /usr/local/bin/eclipse, not /usr/local/eclipse/eclipse. The OS is running RELENG_5 btw. I did not have these problems on my old laptop, but that was before the nspr split and before the -mno-sse2 fix for the gtk20 port. Eclipse was built with WITH_MOZILLA=firefox, but I tried without that with the same result. The problem is window sizes and content. The progress bar window on startup is way to big, the same goes for the initial workspace selection window, the help->about window is empty, some windows pop up with no size at all etc. Sometimes eclipse even throws an exception (see bottom of mail) I don't know if this exception is the actual problem, or just a result of the real problem. I do know that this actually has made eclipse useless for me at the moment. I'm not even able to set up a project run configuration. I remember something about this window problem in an earlier message somewhere, but I have not been able to find this one. Anyone having these problems? -Tom Exception --------- Message: Problems occurred when invoking code from plug-in: "org.eclipse.jface". Doing this has fixed the problem for someone else. Or, equivalently, start eclipse with the -clean option. Furthermore, since this seems like a gtk thing, try removing your gtk/gnome preference files, or create a new user and try from his account. Another interesting thing would be to try to run eclipse with jdk14 instead of jdk15. The combination of these three tasks (a new user with jdk14 and no eclipse preferences stored) should at least be working. > Just out of interest what log file was the error logged to? The combination of these three tasks (a new user with jdk14 and > no eclipse preferences stored) should at least be working. Thanks for the advice, I have tried unsuccessfully your suggestion these are the steps I went through: When I was not having much luck with 1.5.0p2 I uninstalled it at least until 1.4.2 was working with eclipse again. These are the jdk packages on my system: jdk-1.4.2p7_1 Java Development Kit 1.4.2 linux-sun-jdk-1.4.2.08_2 Sun Java Development Kit 1.4 for Linux I deinstalled eclipse then removed the left over directory. I deleted all .eclipse and workspace folders I could find on this system. I deleted all gtk packages of my system and tried to find any left over config files. I commented out every line in my make.conf file. I then went to /usr/ports/java/eclipse and ran make install. I added a new user to the system, checked that his home directory had nothing but the default files (.cshrc, .login, etc). I then logged in with the new user, started x with a gnome session loaded eclipse and still had these difficulties. It does not log anything in the workspace metadata directory or in the .eclipse folder. I have started my laptop behaving the same way by starting up eclipse while logged into the root account. (to use the online plugin update facility). This system was originally installed using beta 4 with the 64-bit packages that were put on the cd by mistake I am pretty certain that I removed and rebuilt all the bad packages when the system was up and running. Now I have backed everything backed up, unless you can think of anything else to try I will perform a fresh install of FreeBSD 6 Beta 5 tomorrow with Gnome, KDE, cvsup packages then update the ports tree to the latest version. NFS mount the /usr/ports/distfiles directory install eclipse and see if I still have this problem. The combination of these three tasks (a new user with jdk14 and > no eclipse preferences stored) should at least be working. I have finally found what was causing the problems for me. A gtk library revision patch was dropped from the port that my freshly installed system seems to require. I have submitted how to fix it as a problem report: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=3D86538 >Category: ports >Responsible: freebsd-ports-bugs >Synopsis: java/eclipse builds with wrong gtk libraries >Arrival-Date: Sat Sep 24 22:50:15 GMT 2005 Thanks, Mark Hobden
