My attempts to understand, what's happening led me to believe, there was something wrong with the fontconfig library and removing the fonts.cache was the workaround. However, the workaround stopped helping upon my upgrade to FreeBSD-6.x. The patch below helps me use linux-firefox every time now, probably, because the latest releases of the browser are being built by Mozilla's Linux servers against newer version of the fontconfig. Either the old (2.1) version of fontconfig is not quite ABI-compatible with the new one, or the actual binaries inside RPM use CPU instructions unsuitable for amd64. My patch brings the library up to the 2.2.3, which is what the native fontconfig installs and they download the 32-bit version, which was built by RedHat for x86_64 (Linuxish for amd64). I'd stick to the native 64-bit self-built firefox, but there are no flash plugins for 64-bit-anything (not even Windows). Please, test this new RPM and consider comitting. Maybe, other RPM-installing ports should be similarly updated? Thanks! Are you using GNOME 2.12? It comes with a newer fontconfig which isn't compatible with linux-fontconfig. I'm using the 32-bit Linux emulation > on FreeBSD-6.0/amd64. Are you using a non-default linux_base? The default linux_base includes the X11 directory in the ld.so.conf, so we don't need the ldconfig part. Trevor failed to add it to his non-default linux_base versions even after I told him about the problem (I did it at least once, maybe more than once). The reason why the linux_base port has to have this in ld.so.conf instead of adding it when installing the linux-X11 bits is: the file is owned by linux_base and no port should modify the files of other ports if we can avoid it. Adding the directory in the linux_base port doesn't hurt and causes a less complex de-/installation procedure for the linux-X11 bits. That was the answer. It's odd, but someone else wrote that you need to make sure the ACPI module is not loaded if you "experience freezes on power on". I wonder if they meant "apic", although there is something called ACPI, and I was disabling it in /boot/loader.conf: "hint.acpi.0.disabled=1". I also discovered that the system that I thought was working, really wasn't. It did the same thing, but not until after Windows had started. The other system would get messed up as soon as I hit "Power On". Thanks again for your help. I don't know why I didn't run across this information during my searches. The documentation on the Fabrice's site http://fabrice.bellard.free.fr/qemu/kqemu-doc.html states that: "When using KQEMU on a Linux or FreeBSD host, QEMU will create a big hidden file containing the RAM of the virtual machine. For best performance, it is important that this file is kept in RAM and not on the hard disk. ..... You can use the QEMU_TMPDIR shell variable to set a new directory for the QEMU RAM file." Applying this to freebsd, does it mean that I have to use mdconfig + newfs to create new filesystem and then setenv QEMU_TMPDIR=/dev/md0? Regards, Lyubich,M. The FreeBSD port uses the MAP_ANON mmap flag, and doesnt need QEMU_TMPDIR (see files/patch-osdep.c which patches work/qemu-snapshot-2005-09-09_23/ osdep.c:qemu_vmalloc().) So you don't need to do anything. I don't use the port, I have all browser stuff in its own tree seperate from /usr/local, so I don't plan to update the port.
