Of course everyone's implementation of the RAID BIOS is different, but if there is on disk configuration thats written at the time of the RAID being enabled, I'd presume that'd hose you. Hmmmmm, it seems although specifications imply that the motherboard used in the Vintage barebone is the P4S800-MX it actually is a different one. I've tried to update the bios (to 1010c.awd) but this failed and produces the error message indicating the bios is not compatible in dos: "failed to find system bios hook". The Asus website supplies a specific bios for the Vintage barebone. I'm beginning to think that might be the origin of my reboot problem ;-( Thanks for your fast reply. If so, please warn me. :) I did some digging in here, and found the following thread, from last=20 January. Well, I have the exact same problem, but with a FastTrack S150=20 SX4 (not M), with chipset PDC20621 (identified by 5.4-RELEASE as 20622)=20 and 64MB ECC SDRAM. This board is installed in a HP ML 110 with an=20 embedded two-channel P-ATA and a (factory-disabled) two-port S-ATA. The=20 FastTrack is plugged to a factory-assembled 4-disk hotswap cage, and has=20 two SATA disks on it. Well, to cut it short, I=B4ll say that I already tried to pick the most= =20 recent sys/dev/ata drivers from FTP, but couldn=B4t find them at=20 current.freebsd.org, nor in .br mirrors. I was preparing to try CVS, but=20 I bumped onto another problem... The bigger problem is, I have no other disks but these S-ATA, and this=20 happens with P-ATA enabled or not (I would need it for the CD-ROM, but=20 doesn=B4t work even with P-ATA disabled and booting with floppies). I als= o=20 tried to "set hint.ata.0.disabled=3D1" (if such thing exists :P ), same=20 problem again. It also seems to be irrelevant if it=B4s RAID 0,1, or 5. I= =20 get this message right upon install. That prevents me from putting the entire output from dmesg, but if=20 necessary, I can try it on VMware, then maybe I could do a copy-paste. ;) So, what would you suggest? Is there any variable I could set upon=20 booting that could workaround it? Or *must* we plug an ordinary P-ATA,=20 install 5.x on it and then rework the drivers? (note: there=B4s no=20 phisical space for one more HD, since the cage takes all 4 bays.) Is=20 there any other alternative? :P Just to add, we have another identical ML-110 that we got to put to=20 work by changing the RAID controller to a Highpoint 1820A, but then the=20 LEDs on the cage don=B4t work, though this isn=B4t really an issue. Apart= =20 from that, it runs almost perfectly, booting right into a RAID 5 array -=20 "almost" goes to Highpoint=B4s daemon, which is slightly outdated: it=B4s= =20 for FBSD 5.2 and needs a few "adjustments". ;) We tried FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE and 5.4-RELEASE. Any ideas? Errrr... did=20 I forgot to mention anything? :) Anyway, thanks a lot for your time. Cheers, Tulio G. da Silva > Dave, > one last note. Here at work, we=B4re successfully using a Highpoint 1820A S-ATA RAID=20 controller on a HP ML110 server, this card is (at least apparently)=20 fully supported by FreeBSD by Highpoint itself, and works fine. There=20 even seems to be some drivers enhancements in version 5.4-RELEASE. One thing to note is that this 1820A supports up to 8 disks in RAID=20 modes 0,1,5, and JBOD, and (important) it=B4s 100MHz PCI-X, but there are= =20 simpler, standard-PCI versions for up to 4 disks. As for performance, we=20 haven=B4t done yet any serious testing, but rough calculations from commo= n=20 file transfers indicate something between 60MB/s and 80 MB/s on RAID 5. As for Promise controllers, we=B4re not being much happy with the S150=20 SX4, and we=B4ve got some trouble with integrated Promise chips, but thes= e=20 were last tested on FreeBSD 5.2.1. I don=B4t remember the exact chip=20 models, but they were from Asus P4P800 and P4C800. I didn=B4t test=B4em=20 after that, but there seems to have been various enhancements for pst=20 driver on FreeBSD 5.3. It=B4s not quite the platform you desire (Intel P4), but I hope this ca= n=20 add something. ;) Cheers, Tulio > Both 3ware boards are on similar based hardware: Tyan S5120AGNF (tomcat > i915g), PIV 3 ghz-HT disabled, 2GB of RAM. The first issue is: it runs toooooooo slow. Transfers with tar=20 (whithout -j, -z and such) or "cat file >/dev/sa0" go at about 800kB/s,=20 though it should be more than 10MB/s. This wouldn=B4t be a big issue, but= =20 then comes the second problem... Besides the speed, hardware compression seems to not being funcional=20 either. I already tried every 4 possible dip switch setting for=20 compression, but I am still not able to transfer a 180GB archive to a=20 (should-be) 260GB medium. And when I thought I could live with that... Third problem: tar does not (re)store all files, specially when I set=20 block ("-b") sizes. With -b 64 and upper, tar would end perfectly and=20 fast, but when trying to restore or list it ends prematurely; i=B4m now=20 trying to test with -b 10, but it=B4s already taking more than 20 hours t= o=20 complete the transfer, and I don=B4t know if it will end before this=20 weekend. :) There=B4s no change if I use tar or gtar. :( Now for the environment: HP ML 110 server, 2.8 GHz HT (enabled) 4x80GB SATA disks in RAID5 on a HighPoint Rocket Raid 1820A Adaptec 2940UW or Ultra160, doesn=B4t matter... I think i=B4m using correct cabling :) ; with the 2940UW I use a=20 standard flat-68 and termination on the device, or, the Ultra160 goes=20 with a terminated 2-device twisted flat cable on the card=B4s LVD=20 connector (not the SE). That=B4s what we use for other SCSI machines too. Is there any known issue with AIT-3 tapes? Am I missing or doing=20 something wrong? Should I change to another backup software? Well, thanks again for your attention. Ideas are *very* welcome. I can't help you with most of your problems, but regarding the "compression"... I would guess that if you have 180GB to backup, it's not all text. :) When I last used a tape drive years ago, when writing to a 2GB tape that would supposedly hold 4GB compressed, I could fit only about 1.9GB before the tape was full. Turning off hardware compression, I could fit 2GB. The problem was that I was saving already compressed multimedia files, and the tape drive's "compression" just added overhead and took up more space. So unless you're backing up text or similar files, don't believe the marketing hype about getting 2x the amount onto your tapes... That=B4s quite disappointing... :( We had already noticed this=20 kind of behaviour with DDS-* tapes, but we got some progress varying the=20 block size... and yup, I=B4m really using gzipped data. :S For AIT-3, however, i thought this hardware compression was something=20 about using lower tape=B4s phisical-rolling speeds or alikes, but I could= =20 never really find anything concrete about the methods... the only one=20 thing I found was they could use "variable block sizes", but that=B4s all= .=20 Again, not many details. Anyway, I=B4m giving up the idea of compression=20 for now. If something, I=B4m noticeing that (at least with -b 10) it becomes (a=20 lot) slower with time, but I guess this would be more of a question to=20 the -performance list. Add: while writing this message, I remembered to check the 700V=B4s=20 "Product Specification Manual", and they mention something about=20 dual-partitions, but it seems something that needs to be implemented at=20 driver level, since it includes SCSI commands. In this case, I would=20 need to format the tape as a 2-partition one... any clue about if and/or=20 how that works on FreeBSD? The MergedXinerama option (which you have enabled in the config excerpt above) should be getting you the Xinerama hints necessary for your WM, if your WM knows about xinerama. I didn't think you wanted the 2nd device section in this case of using MergedFB, but that would be my only suggestion. I haven't run any multihead system personally, and I know it's tricky from the one I've ever set up. -- Eric Anholt eta@lclark.edu http://people.freebsd.org/~anholt/ anholt@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Sat May 21 07:03:57 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 76BE316A4CF for ; Sat, 21 May 2005 07:03:57 +0000 (GMT) Received: from avocado.salatschuessel.net (avocado.salatschuessel.net [83.136.81.184]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6C4F943D8F for ; Sat, 21 May 2005 07:03:56 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from lehmann@ans-netz.de) Received: (qmail 13147 invoked by uid 89); 21 May 2005 07:03:16 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO kartoffel.salatschuessel.net) (83.136.81.185) by avocado.salatschuessel.net with SMTP; 21 May 2005 07:03:16 -0000 Date: Sat, 21 May 2005 09:03:53 +0200 From: Oliver Lehmann To: hardware@freebsd.org Message-Id: <20050521090353.5bfac838.lehmann@ans-netz.de> In-Reply-To: <20050520235332.2e46c9a4.lehmann@ans-netz.de> References: <20050520235332.2e46c9a4.lehmann@ans-netz.de> X-Mailer: Sylpheed version 1.9.11 (GTK+ 2.6.7; amd64-portbld-freebsd6.0) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: amd64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: radeon cards - xinerama in xfree X-BeenThere: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: General discussion of FreeBSD hardware List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 21 May 2005 07:03:57 -0000 Oliver Lehmann wrote: it looks like adding Virtual there helped me... now it works! yihaaaa! :) Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen1" Device "ATI1" Monitor "Targa" DefaultDepth 24 Subsection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1152x864" ViewPort 0 0 Virtual 2304 864 EndSubsection EndSection -- Oliver Lehmann http://www.pofo.de/ http://wishlist.ans-netz.de/
