So it seems that your 0.5 TB free space is very sufficient for some time since now. > I forgot to mention that I removed both 5.x package sets for ia64, > since 5.x is no longer supported on ia64 and ftp-master was out of > space. Ok. Please - if there would be any plans to upgrade disk space on ftp-master, do not forget to write about such upgrade here. And for me, it is much better to update things at the end of the year, whereas at the beginning it would not be very good idea. I'm not sure, who all is interested in this, but for me, it is sufficient to know the maximum possible used disk space, which means the size of disk space on ftp-master, so I can build bigger disk space on required machines. Information about sizes of uploaded packages (and uploaded packages at all, except that it is good warning, that I would check status of mirroring) is for me and for now simply useless - however I do not know about the others and I do not know about the future... Nope. Extending a striped volume by another stripe is impossible in about any system I've seen so far. (Extending a striped volume by concatenating another set of stripes is something different, and I guess GEOM's architecture would allow for that.) Extending file systems is something different. AIX can do it, yes, and can even shrink them (which is much more work), albeit it might take forever, depending on the load. Solaris' growfs isn't that much more capable than FreeBSD's growfs is, except Solaris has got the lockfs(2) syscall so they can grow a filesystem online, while FreeBSD requires the filesystem to be unmounted. Solaris with vxfs is about the same as AIX is (but you gotta pay a lot of bucks for that). I think vinum could be tricked into extending a stripe set by another stripe set (so a concetanation will result), but I'm not sure about it, and would generally be very careful with that. (Not sure about gvinum here, perhaps it can do it as well.) But that doesn't seem to be Dimitar's intention. See above, inserting another stripe row will completely change the topology, so the file system on top of the volume will become invalid. (I've seen a feature like that being announced in some hardware RAID array quite some time ago, but when we tried, it took forever due to the massive amount of copy operations needed, and then it crashed anyway.) ISTR someone once analyzed that striping doesn't make much sense with modern UFSes at all, as the UFS itself distributes the data already well enough, so a concatenation yields the same overall performance. Concetanetions are way easier to handle in any respect, and see above, once you've added something to the concat, you could use growfs to tell the file system to pick up the volume's new size. I've done this a number of times with FreeBSD (albeit with [g]vinum-based volumes), but I've also seen it fail occasionally. :-/ But then, I've also seen Solaris' growfs getting stuck, and trashing a volume, as well as vxvm trashing several hundred Megabytes of data. To quote a signature my colleague is using: ``Failure is not an option. It comes bundled with the software.'' -- cheers, J"org .-.-. --... ...-- -.. . To quote a > signature my colleague is using: ``Failure is not an option. It comes > bundled with the software.'' Let me turn the question this way. Curently we have done the stripe as follows: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ad2 bs=512 count=79 dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ad3 bs=512 count=79 gstripe load gstripe label -v -s 65536 data /dev/ad2 /dev/ad3 newfs -U /dev/stripe/data mount /dev/stripe/data /mnt/storage Everything works as expected. Then we run almost out of space of that /dev/stripe/data and we have 2 x 250 GB diska we want to add to this stripe. As far as I understand it we should umount the device and concat da4 and da6 to the existing da2 and da3 ones. gconcat label -v data /dev/da2 /dev/da3 /dev/da4 /dev/da6 growfs /dev/stripe/data The real question is: can we preserve the data already existing there or the new label command will trash the metadata already being on the disks last sectors ? If there is another way to add the spare disks to the existing stripe preserving the data there I'm all eager to hear about it. I'm not sure how to approach the gvinum in our case. I tried to look at the sources ( kernel: src/sys/geom/label/*; userland: serc/sbin/geom/class/label/*) but can't manage to find my way aroud ;-) Can you please be more specific about the exact commands we should issue/read about/consider. Thank you very much for your time. -- pub 4096R/0E4BD0AB 2003-03-18 fingerprint 1AE7 7C66 0A26 5BFF DF22 5D55 1C57 0C89 0E4B D0AB From owner-freebsd-hubs@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Oct 25 15:30:38 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: hubs@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-hubs@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 44B2216A420 for ; Tue, 25 Oct 2005 15:30:38 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from kris@obsecurity.org) Received: from elvis.mu.org (elvis.mu.org [192.203.228.196]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CF33E43D55 for ; Tue, 25 Oct 2005 15:30:37 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from kris@obsecurity.org) Received: from obsecurity.dyndns.org (elvis.mu.org [192.203.228.196]) by elvis.mu.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 96BEF1A3C29; Tue, 25 Oct 2005 08:30:37 -0700 (PDT) Received: by obsecurity.dyndns.org (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 410E7534EC; Tue, 25 Oct 2005 11:30:36 -0400 (EDT) Date: Tue, 25 Oct 2005 11:30:34 -0400 From: Kris Kennaway To: Rudolf Cejka Message-ID: <20051025153033.GA93337@xor.obsecurity.org> References: <20051023040637.GA5823@xor.obsecurity.org> <59adc1a0510222220o1ba49790k@mail.gmail.com> <20051023053217.GA36259@xor.obsecurity.org> <20051023112636.GA28054@fit.vutbr.cz> <59adc1a0510230714o540b194es@mail.gmail.com> <20051024083231.GA18592@fit.vutbr.cz> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="VS++wcV0S1rZb1Fb" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20051024083231.GA18592@fit.vutbr.cz> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i Cc: hubs@freebsd.org, Kris Kennaway Subject: Re: 6.0 package uploads X-BeenThere: freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: "FreeBSD Distributions Hubs: mail sup ftp" List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 25 Oct 2005 15:30:38 -0000 --VS++wcV0S1rZb1Fb Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On Mon, Oct 24, 2005 at 10:32:31AM +0200, Rudolf Cejka wrote: > Dimitar Vasilev wrote (2005/10/23): > > Would it be possible in the future to announce the size of packages > > being uploaded, so colleagues have more adequate reaction? >=20 > I'm not sure, who all is interested in this, but for me, it is sufficient > to know the maximum possible used disk space, which means the size of > disk space on ftp-master, so I can build bigger disk space on required > machines. At the current time ftp-master is: /dev/twed0s1h 311027802 270670054 15475524 95% /= ftpmaster We're pretty close to the limit here (I came within a few MB of filling it up the other day), so it may be that in the near future it will have to expand. Someone will let you know when that's planned, though. BTW, I upload updates to one or more of the packages-*-{stable,current} directories every day or two, i.e. only adding new packages and those that changed in the new build, and removing old ones while leaving unchanged packages untouched. So there's pretty much always new stuff to download on whatever schedule you can handle. It will create a concetanation of all four devices. My suggestion is that you can omit the striping completely (as it doesn't yield a significant performance gain), and instead initially set up a concat of da2 and da3. Then, when you run out of space, just concat more devices to it. This will grow the volume. You still need to grow the filesystem afterwards. Supposedly, GEOM is fully stackable, so you could also initially setup a stripe set, and if you run out of space, setup another stripe set, and concatenate both to a large volume. > The real question is: can we preserve the data already existing > there or the new label command will trash the metadata already being > on the disks last sectors ? data != metadata I think for my initial suggestion, no problems will arise, as simply each device has its own set of metadata, and the real data aren't affected by metadata changes. However, if you've initially got a stripe, and later want to change that into two stripes that are concatenated, you cannot use the "automatic" (i.e. "label" method), as I understand the documentation, as the new concat's label would trash the last (non-metadata) sector of the already existing stripe set. You have to use manual configuration then. Of course, if you use manual configuration for everything, you're always on the safe side, as no metadata will be written to disk. > Can you please be more specific about the exact commands we should > issue/read about/consider. Sorry, I haven't used GEOM for this kind of operations so far, so I can only guess based on the documentation (which is pretty clear though). I'm more used to full volume management (where you typically don't hand out all the available storage initially but rather keep all unused space available in the volume manager for later assignment), and all my experience comes from vinum and now gvinum (and other volume managers, like Veritas and Solaris VM). vinum (and Veritas VM) follows a completely different approach for metadata, as each physical disc added to volume management (which can be a slice and/or partition) stores its own copy of the metadata right at the beginning (which is a full redundant copy, i.e. each disc has the same full set of metadata). The remainder of the disc is then available for data assignment, and no metadata will ever be written there. That way, growing concatenated volumes is always without risk. -- cheers, J"org .-.-. --... ...-- -.. .
