I'm the one who filed the original bug report: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=75898 Since it hasn't been touched yet by anybody, my guess is that the problems persist. If you want to try for yourself, just recompile your kernel with CPUTYPE=pentium-m and see whether it boots or panics. > is it safe to compile the world with that switch on (and downgrade to > something else - pentium3? - for kernel&loader) ? I'd assume the answer to this one is yes - it's safe. Personally, I compile world and kernel as pentium3, but that's just out of laziness. As you can read in the bug report, the problem is that SSE2 instructions get used by the kernel and loader before they are enabled. Once the boot gets to the first userland programs, SSE2 is enabled so any world programs should run just fine when compiled as pentium-m. - Bartosz From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Mar 7 01:10:02 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7758F16A4CE for ; Mon, 7 Mar 2005 01:10:02 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2837E43D2D for ; Mon, 7 Mar 2005 01:10:02 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j271A28K022329 for ; Mon, 7 Mar 2005 01:10:02 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id j271A2C2022328; Mon, 7 Mar 2005 01:10:02 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Mon, 7 Mar 2005 01:10:02 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200503070110.j271A2C2022328@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, Andrzej Kukula Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CAFCE16A4CE for ; Mon, 7 Mar 2005 01:03:29 +0000 (GMT) Received: from www.freebsd.org (www.freebsd.org [216.136.204.117]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8331243D41 for ; Mon, 7 Mar 2005 01:03:29 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j2713TUe023133 for ; Mon, 7 Mar 2005 01:03:29 GMT (envelope-from nobody@www.freebsd.org) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id j2713Sae023132; Mon, 7 Mar 2005 01:03:28 GMT (envelope-from nobody) Message-Id: <200503070103.j2713Sae023132@www.freebsd.org> Date: Mon, 7 Mar 2005 01:03:28 GMT From: Andrzej Kukula To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: www-2.3 Subject: i386/78517: WRITE_DMA and READ_DMA timeouts with ATI RX330 chipset X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 07 Mar 2005 01:10:02 -0000 >Number: 78517 >Category: i386 >Synopsis: WRITE_DMA and READ_DMA timeouts with ATI RX330 chipset >Confidential: no >Severity: serious >Priority: medium >Responsible: freebsd-i386 >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: sw-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Mon Mar 07 01:10:01 GMT 2005 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Andrzej Kukula >Release: 5.3-RELEASE ISO from freebsd.org >Organization: >Environment: FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE i386, kernel GENERIC installed from CD >Description: 1. Submitted by: Nate Lawson Revision Changes Path 1.42 +1 -0 src/sys/dev/ata/ata-queue.c Is this change supposed to be "safe" against a 5.4-PRERELEASE kernel = from =20 today (CVSupped about 1700 CST)? If it is supposed to be, its NOT! =20 It DOES fix the failure to requeue timed out requests, but it also = provokes=20 radical destabilization of the interrupt system in the kernel (e.g. = receive=20 serial interrupts "disappear", etc) leading evenutally to a panic. BTW, it appear to fix the requeue problem with disks, and wth = this in a disk that takes a timeout (but is actually working) does not = disconnect from a GEOM mirror - the requeue is successful. However, for obvious reasons the kernel instability that results from = the=20 retried write is not acceptable :) Don't know if this is germane to what is about to show up in = 5.4-RELEASE, but if it is, this urgently needs to be looked at. Needless to say I've backed this attempt at a workaround out. Date: Mon, 7 Mar 2005 22:01:33 -0800 (PST) I'm running 5.4-PRERELEASE FreeBSD 5.4-PRERELEASE on an amd 64. I've seen these sort of errors on boot up for a few months... up to now it's only slowed down the boot process for a while, however today the machine hung after the first, and I had to POR. It doesn't do this at every boot up. Similar to pr Problem Report i386/66368? Here's a sample "bad" dmesg: Copyright (c) 1992-2005 The FreeBSD Project. Thank you, Daniel >How-To-Repeat: Boot from 5.3-Release installation floppies with Compaq Netelligent 10/100 PC Card ethernet card installed. >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Mar 10 07:47:26 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6F80C16A4CE; Thu, 10 Mar 2005 07:47:26 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3E9B843D4C; Thu, 10 Mar 2005 07:47:26 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from sergei@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (sergei@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j2A7lQFV098821; Thu, 10 Mar 2005 07:47:26 GMT (envelope-from sergei@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from sergei@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id j2A7lQsA098817; Thu, 10 Mar 2005 07:47:26 GMT (envelope-from sergei) Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2005 07:47:26 GMT From: Sergei Kolobov Message-Id: <200503100747.j2A7lQsA098817@freefall.freebsd.org> To: sergei@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org, sergei@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: ports/78151: maildrop 1.8.0 WITH_AUTHLIB=yes fails to install X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2005 07:47:26 -0000 Synopsis: maildrop 1.8.0 WITH_AUTHLIB=yes fails to install Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-i386->sergei Responsible-Changed-By: sergei Responsible-Changed-When: Thu Mar 10 07:46:05 GMT 2005 Responsible-Changed-Why: Mine. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=78151 From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Mar 10 12:20:02 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 37DCA16A4CE for ; Thu, 10 Mar 2005 12:20:02 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BF46643D5E for ; Thu, 10 Mar 2005 12:20:01 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j2ACK1K5033813 for ; Thu, 10 Mar 2005 12:20:01 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id j2ACK1Bf033812; Thu, 10 Mar 2005 12:20:01 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2005 12:20:01 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200503101220.j2ACK1Bf033812@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, Victor Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 24E4F16A4CE for ; Thu, 10 Mar 2005 12:15:22 +0000 (GMT) Received: from www.freebsd.org (www.freebsd.org [216.136.204.117]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 08E8C43D3F for ; Thu, 10 Mar 2005 12:15:22 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j2ACFLBw019053 for ; Thu, 10 Mar 2005 12:15:21 GMT (envelope-from nobody@www.freebsd.org) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id j2ACFLt6019052; Thu, 10 Mar 2005 12:15:21 GMT (envelope-from nobody) Message-Id: <200503101215.j2ACFLt6019052@www.freebsd.org> Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2005 12:15:21 GMT From: Victor To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: www-2.3 Subject: i386/78666: ata0-master: FAILURE ATA-IDENTIFY timed out X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2005 12:20:02 -0000 >Number: 78666 >Category: i386 >Synopsis: ata0-master: FAILURE ATA-IDENTIFY timed out >Confidential: no >Severity: critical >Priority: high >Responsible: freebsd-i386 >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: sw-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Thu Mar 10 12:20:01 GMT 2005 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Victor >Release: FreeBSD 5.3 >Organization: Olencom Electronics >Environment: CD 5.3 FreeBSD from site ftp.freebsd.org >Description: System - SuperMicro 6014H-82B. Obviously, I can't speak for everyone. For me, your patch fixes the kernel. But the loader still causes an exception. That's of course because your patch only affects the kernel itself and not the loader. If it was possible to do a similar tweak for the loader, I am confident it would make the bug go away.
