I don't know if a minimum percentage of swap needs to be in use to provoke the panic. I have /tmp mounted as a md-backed filesystem on GBDE-encrypted swap, so usually I have at least a couple of tens of megabytes of swap used by the time I shutdown. In my case, I always get a panic (unless no swapping has occurred). Here is the panic I got when I last did a shutdown on my system: [[...]] All buffers synced. unmount of /dev failed (BUSY) Uptime: 8d5h26m53s GEOM_MIRROR: Device raid1: provider mirror/raid1 destroyed. That is decimal 3,951,397,872 . When you boot these servers without PAE enabled, the "real memory" is 3,757,965,312. I think this indicates that the page the kernel is dealing with is within the "remapped" region. There is a third panic that occurs, which I do not have a trace for, but follows the same pattern as this person saw: http://groups-beta.google.com/group/lucky.freebsd.stable/browse_thread/thread/99978f6cbf071223/136ab31fcd339d5c?lnk=st&q=freebsd+4GB+PAE+thread&rnum=5&hl=en#136ab31fcd339d5c That seems to be dealing with memory in around the same range as what I'm seeing. My understanding of kernel internals and fancy PAE memory access is pretty limited, so I could be way off on my guesses. It does seem that others are having the same trouble, though. >How-To-Repeat: This bug is very easy to reproduce. On the system, compile and install the PAE kernel, reboot, then run a program which calloc()'s 500MB, several times, while rebuilding the kernel repeatedly. Eventually the kernel will crash (usually around 10-30 minutes in). I believe it crashes when it starts putting pages >3.5GB into the inactive queue, or tries to swap it out, or something like that. >Fix: Unknown. Disabling PAE works, but is obviously not ideal. >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Aug 5 07:10:58 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C0A1D16A425; Fri, 5 Aug 2005 07:10:58 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from dtjwtalfuq@FastMail.FM) Received: from caremailsmtp1.prontomail.com (84.95.80.244.cable.012.net.il [84.95.80.244]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0E3E143D45; Fri, 5 Aug 2005 07:10:49 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from dtjwtalfuq@FastMail.FM) message-id: <002401c5998c$d3b73e80$094f00b8@k.f.gc> From: "Eric" To: Date: Fri, 05 Aug 2005 03:10:57 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.3790.1830 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.3790.1830 Subject: Is This St0ck Ready to Blaze Higher? It doesn't panic, unfortunately, or give any indication on the console why it is having trouble. fsck works fine when you run it from the command line, in the foreground. >How-To-Repeat: Install 5.4-STABLE on a multi-TB server, creating a 36GB / partition, and 1 or more 2TB partitions (you will need to use auto-carving). Use softupdates to format the large partitions. Use UFS1. Leave the large target partition completely empty. Unmount the target partition. Start "fsck /dev/whatever", and hit ^C part way through. Verify it says "FILE SYSTEM MARKED DIRTY". Reboot. Log in again to monitor the server. It will eventually stop responding to your commands. >Fix: Disable background fsck in /etc/rc.conf: background_fsck="NO" It may be that using UFS2 also fixes the problem (but we've had other issues with that, I'll open another PR when I can reproduce that). >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted:
