I've been able to repeat the problem using any of these operating systems: FreeBSD 5.4-STABLE FreeBSD 5.4-RELEASE FreeBSD 4.6-RELEASE I've tested against three different NFS servers, and the problem remained with each: RAIDZONE NFS array (linux 2.2 kernel) Linux 2.6 NFS server (SuSE 9.3) FreeBSD 5.4 NFS server (5.4-RELEASE) I've also tested on other operating systems, and none of these experienced this problem: Solaris 8 SPARC Linux 2.6 kernel (SuSE 9.3) Linux 2.6 kernel (SuSE 9.1) This seems to indicate the problem is with the FreeBSD NFS client code. Various NFS client mount options were tested, including tcp and mntudp, as well as setting nfs_access_cache="0" in /etc/rc.conf. None of these options affected the below behaviour. Any time the underlying file (and inode, I suppose) is renamed, the "Stale NFS file handle" error will occur. I am not an NFS expert by any means, but our product uses files on an NFS filesystem in this manner, and we've never seen this problem on any other OS (CommuniGate Pro is available on 37 platforms today). The NFS client should not be caching file handle data referenced by a unique identifier other than the filename itself, from what I know. Please contact me if you have any questions. Thank you. Sincerely, Thom O'Connor thom@communigate.com thom@interludium.com >How-To-Repeat: The problem is quite easy to replicate. Create an NFS server share, and mount that export on at least two systems, where at least one of the systems is a FreeBSD system. In the following example, both sys7 is FreeBSD 5.4-RELEASE and sys8 is FreeBSD 5.4-STABLE: Using /etc/fstab settings something like these (but varied for different tests): raidzone.cluster:/home/data /data nfs rw,nfsv3,-r32768,-w32768,intr 0 0 And then mounting that filesystem on both sys7 and sys8: sys7# mount /data sys8# mount /data Then perform these steps: sys8# cd /data sys8# touch testfile sys8# cat testfile sys7# cd /data sys7# touch testfile2 sys7# mv testfile2 testfile sys8# cat testfile cat: testfile: Stale NFS file handle >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Aug 8 18:43:22 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1BE4A16A420; Mon, 8 Aug 2005 18:43:22 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from sf@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C9CAC43D48; Mon, 8 Aug 2005 18:43:21 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from sf@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (sf@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j78IhLlH068623; Mon, 8 Aug 2005 18:43:21 GMT (envelope-from sf@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from sf@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id j78IhLIR068619; Mon, 8 Aug 2005 18:43:21 GMT (envelope-from sf) Date: Mon, 8 Aug 2005 18:43:21 GMT From: FUJISHIMA Satsuki Message-Id: <200508081843.j78IhLIR068619@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsdbugs@xyzzy.cjb.net, sf@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: i386/68087: wget core dumps with: Assertion failed: (msecs >= 0), function calc_rate, file retr.c, line 262. The I/O permissions however don't get set immediately, but need some time to get set. This causes a I/O port access that is being issued shortly after the sysarch(2) syscall with the i386_set_ioperm(2) argument to fail due to missing I/O port permissions: Bus error: 10 (core dumped) The problem will not occur when there is a heavy system load. Due to the mulritasking nature of Unix the code execution will be delayed and thus the I/O permissions get set before the actual port access. However when the execution time of the app is close to realtime there won't be enough time between the success of the sysarch(2) syscall and the port request. I have searched Google and not had much success in finding a solution or a pointer to a solution. On FreeBSD 5.4 I am following the Jail creation steps as defined in the jail man page. D=/here/is/the/jail cd /usr/src mkdir -p $D make world DESTDIR=$D cd etc make distribution DESTDIR=$D mount_devfs devfs $D/dev cd $D ln -sf dev/null kernel Running on my main Pentium 4 computer this works fine, but on other machines, including Pentium II, Celeron D and VMware machines, the "make world" crashes out with seemingly insignificant issues. Eg. Ld: cannot find -lc Pwd: ipf is not a file I have now tried this on another Pentium 4 computer and it works. Now, this is not to say that I have a hardware failure on my non-P4 machines, but it seems strange that the P4 machines I have tested on worked fine, and all other platforms have failed. I have also tried raw CD installs and also CVSup on each platform, and the failures still plague the non-P4 systems. All help appreciated. Further reading and testing showed that the bug is a relatively new one and fixing it cleanly is not so easy. The CPU apparently examines the permissions bitmap on every access (that's one reason i/o accesses are so slow :-), so the TSS [register] doesn't need to be reloaded after every change. However, for the first access the bitmap is usually empty since the loading of the new TSS that holds the bitmap has been broken by an optimization. From an old version of i386/sys_machdep.c: % int % i386_extend_pcb(struct thread *td) % { % ... % /* switch to the new TSS after syscall completes */ % td->td_flags |= TDF_NEEDRESCHED; This was broken by optimizing null context switches. Now the switch to the new TSS doesn't normally actually occur after the syscall completes, since the scheduler normally reschedules the same thread and mi_switch() now avoids calling cpu_switch() in this case. % ... % } % % static int % i386_set_ioperm(td, args) % struct thread *td; % char *args; % { % .. % if (td->td_pcb->pcb_ext == 0) % if ((error = i386_extend_pcb(td)) != 0) % return (error); % iomap = (char *)td->td_pcb->pcb_ext->ext_iomap; This extends the pcb on the first call to i386_set_ioperm() for a thread, so if the TSS were reloaded after the call as intended then the first call would be less broken than subsequent calls. % % if (ua.start + ua.length > IOPAGES * PAGE_SIZE * NBBY) % return (EINVAL); % % for (i = ua.start; i < ua.start + ua.length; i++) { % if (ua.enable) % iomap[i >> 3] &= ~(1 << (i & 7)); % else % iomap[i >> 3] |= (1 << (i & 7)); % } Testing shows than an ltr() is not needed here. It is sufficient to sleep (in the application) after the first call so that the new TSS gets loaded. For subsequent calls, the TSS descriptor doesn't change, and the TSS apparently doesn't need to be reloaded to get changes to the contents of the TSS seen. % return (error); % } For a quick fix, a tsleep(..., 1) in 386_extend_pcb() should work as well as a sleep in the application (unless/until somone modifies short sleeps to not switch).
