This appears to be a filesystem issue, and not something to do with KDE (just luck that this tripped the bug). >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Nov 13 11:40:24 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6523916A421 for ; Sun, 13 Nov 2005 11:40:24 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 87EA843D46 for ; Sun, 13 Nov 2005 11:40:22 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id jADBeMw4058844 for ; Sun, 13 Nov 2005 11:40:22 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id jADBeMJl058842; Sun, 13 Nov 2005 11:40:22 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Sun, 13 Nov 2005 11:40:22 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200511131140.jADBeMJl058842@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, Li RUi jiang Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A5FD416A41F for ; Sun, 13 Nov 2005 11:37:47 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (www.freebsd.org [216.136.204.117]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4972A43D4C for ; Sun, 13 Nov 2005 11:37:47 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id jADBbk0M034780 for ; Sun, 13 Nov 2005 11:37:46 GMT (envelope-from nobody@www.freebsd.org) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id jADBbkKl034779; Sun, 13 Nov 2005 11:37:46 GMT (envelope-from nobody) Message-Id: <200511131137.jADBbkKl034779@www.freebsd.org> Date: Sun, 13 Nov 2005 11:37:46 GMT From: Li RUi jiang To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: www-2.3 Cc: Subject: i386/88917: ipw can not work in adhoc mode X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 13 Nov 2005 11:40:24 -0000 >Number: 88917 >Category: i386 >Synopsis: ipw can not work in adhoc mode >Confidential: no >Severity: serious >Priority: low >Responsible: freebsd-i386 >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: sw-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Sun Nov 13 11:40:22 GMT 2005 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Li RUi jiang >Release: 6.0 >Organization: Fudan university,ShangHai,China >Environment: FreeBSD lith.3322.org 6.0-RELEASE FreeBSD 6.0-RELEASE #0: Fri Nov 4 04:19:50 CST 2005 root@:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/CUSTOM_6 i386 >Description: The machine running windows is set to adhoc mode. ssid is cat On FreeBSD machine, I type: ---------------------------------- ipwcontrol -f /usr/local/share/ipw-firmware/ipw-i.fw ifconfig ipw0 mediaopt adhoc ifconfig ipw0 ssid cat ifconfig ipw0 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 ifconfig ipw0 up ------------------------------------- the led of wireless is on. then the windows machine says that it has detected a wireless network.. Yes, it only makes it work at SATA150 speeds. But it is soo much better, than not work at all, that I'm happy. The disk is really a bottleneck anyway. The PR is 13 months old now. It is already deep inside my desktop system -- I can't reach there... The "marketing name" is SATA300 TX2plus (one PATA and 2 SATA channels), although TX4 can't be very different (it has 4 SATA channels instead of 2): After applying the patch, it is identified as: atapci1: port 0xc000-0xc07f,0xc400-0xc4ff mem 0xf7051000-0xf7051fff,0xf7000000-0xf701ffff irq 9 at device 11.0 on pci0 `pciconv -lv' says: atapci1@pci0:11:0: class=0x018000 card=0x3d73105a chip=0x3d73105a rev=0x02 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'Promise Technology Inc' class = mass storage IMHO, the driver should be smarter in identifying devices, you have not seen before as compatible with something, you have. Anything unknown, with Promise being the vendor and 'mass storate' being the class should be examined as an ATA controller, for example. You can be very conservative enabling features, and even print a ton of warnings, but it should be possible to install/boot FreeBSD with such hardware. Is this not doable? That wont fly sadly, if you look closer you'll see that things change =20= from generation to generation of the Promise chips, so chances are =20 very slim it will work. With controllers saying they are ATA of some sort it will be treated =20 as a generic chip, and it should work even with DMA but most likely =20 with reduced performance. Promise chips are *not* in this category... I tried to do an Install Upgrade from disc 1 that I downloaded last night. sysinstall runs but when I select CD/DVD for Installation Media I get the message No CD/DVD devices found! (The bottom of the Choose Installation Media screen says "Press F1 for more information on the various media types" but pressing F1 seems to have no effect, it certainly doesn''t change what is displayed on the screen.) I tried the procedure described in section 2.2.3 of the current FreeBSD handbook to display the last few hundred lines of the device probe output and here is an extract: atapci0: port 0x9010-0x9017,0x9400-0x9403,0x9810-0x9817,0x9c00-0x9c03,0xa00-0xa000f irq 22 at device 6.0 on pci4 ata2: on atapci0 ata3: on atapci0 isa0: ... atapci1 port 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6,0x170-0x177,0x376,0xf000-0xf00f at device 31.2 on pci0 atapci1: failed to enable memory mapping! ata0: on atapci1 ata1: on atapci1 .. md0: Preloaded image 4423680 bytes at 0xc0a3070c ad0: 76318MB at ata0-master SATA150 Trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/md0 For comparison, here's the dmesg output from a FreeBSD 5.4 custom kernel on the same box: Notice the CD drive is reported in 5.4 but not in 6.0 Copyright (c) 1992-2005 The FreeBSD Project. When I have used fbsd 5.4 I have some problems with sound (soundcard shared irq with NIC, touchpad and other devices). When i booted with acpi, sound was ok. Now I upgrade to fbsd 6.0 and without acpi sound still doesn't work. When i try boot with acpi enable, i receive message about DMA error with my disk. In this moment boot proces is frozen and i can do only hard reset. In my notebook is Intel 915 chipset. here is dmesg output when i boot without acpi: Copyright (c) 1992-2005 The FreeBSD Project.
