It crashed when it was mostly idle, so I don't think it would have been doing much. I had the dumpdev directive on, in rc.conf(5), so it saved a core dump of the panic, that I could inspect. I used kgdb(1) to get a trackback, however I noticed when I first invoked it, it printed a bunch of garbage, after printing "Unread portion of the kernel message buffer:." But, after several screens of "garbage" I got a (kgdb) prompt. So, what follows is the text presented from that point forward: #0 doadump () at pcpu.h:165 165 pcpu.h: No such file or directory. in pcpu.h (kgdb) (kgdb) bt #0 doadump () at pcpu.h:165 #1 0xc0535912 in boot (howto=260) at /usr/src/sys/kern/kern_shutdown.c:399 #2 0xc0535d04 in panic ( fmt=0xc07b2e33 "initiate_write_inodeblock_ufs1: already started") at /usr/src/sys/kern/kern_shutdown.c:555 #3 0xc06c4e9c in initiate_write_inodeblock_ufs1 (inodedep=0xc3ac5680, bp=0x0) at /usr/src/sys/ufs/ffs/ffs_softdep.c:3722 #4 0xc06c4a3c in softdep_disk_io_initiation (bp=0xcbeb6788) at /usr/src/sys/ufs/ffs/ffs_softdep.c:3598 #5 0xc06ce60d in ffs_geom_strategy (bo=0xc1cf00c0, bp=0xcbeb6788) at buf.h:422 #6 0xc058dba9 in bufwrite (bp=0xcbeb6788) at buf.h:415 #7 0xc06ce5b8 in ffs_bufwrite (bp=0xcbeb6788) at /usr/src/sys/ufs/ffs/ffs_vfsops.c:1663 #8 0xc058fcad in vfs_bio_awrite (bp=0xcbeb6788) at buf.h:399 #9 0xc059897c in vop_stdfsync (ap=0xd570fca0) at /usr/src/sys/kern/vfs_default.c:417 #10 0xc04da1ae in devfs_fsync (ap=0xd570fca0) at /usr/src/sys/fs/devfs/devfs_vnops.c:307 #11 0xc077006e in VOP_FSYNC_APV (vop=0x0, a=0x0) at vnode_if.c:1020 #12 0xc05a2a84 in sync_vnode (bo=0xc1cf00c0, td=0xc1a97000) at vnode_if.h:537 #13 0xc05a2e6f in sched_sync () at /usr/src/sys/kern/vfs_subr.c:1665 #14 0xc0519800 in fork_exit (callout=0xc05a2b80 , arg=0x0, frame=0x0) at /usr/src/sys/kern/kern_fork.c:789 ---Type to continue, or q to quit--- #15 0xc0746aec in fork_trampoline () at /usr/src/sys/i386/i386/exception.s:208 (kgdb) The "panic line" as reported by savecore(8) is: "initiate_write_inodeblock_ufs1: already started" Also worth noting, I had some of my UFS2 filesystems mounted with options "sync", since I wanted to avoid data loss because I was experiencing some problems with panics after upgrading from 6.0-BETA4 to 6.0-RELEASE (due to a problem in if_bridge(4) as it turns out, I see that there is a an outstanding PR about this; switching to bridge(4) stopped the panics) So, I wonder if that, perhaps, might have something to do with the panics. Actually I think only one filesystem was synchronous. After a few days, I re-mounted some of them to "nosync" (mount -u -o nosync), after it seemed like this last update to -STABLE seemed, well, "stable". I think only one of them was still set to synchronous, But that was over a week ago, so I don't know if that is related to the panic. Also, AFAIK, all the volumes are formatted as UFS2. Here is the output of mount(8) after the server has restarted from the panic: > mount /dev/da0s1a on / (ufs, local, synchronous) devfs on /dev (devfs, local) /dev/da0s1e on /usr (ufs, NFS exported, local, synchronous, soft-updates) /dev/da0s1d on /var (ufs, local, synchronous, soft-updates) /dev/ad0s1a on /Network (ufs, NFS exported, local, synchronous, soft-updates) /dev/da1d on /mnt (ufs, local, synchronous) devfs on /var/named/dev (devfs, local) So, as you can tell, in my fstab(5), I have them defaulted to be mounted with options "sync", since they've all initially mounted with that option set. Last, but not least I'll list the KLDs loaded as well as my kernel's config file (with some of comments stripped for brevity): > kldstat Id Refs Address Size Name 1 6 0xc0400000 4d9830 kernel 2 1 0xc08da000 51e8 if_tap.ko 3 1 0xc08e0000 62530 acpi.ko 4 1 0xc1eea000 2000 green_saver.ko And the config: > grep -v ^# /sys/i386/conf/TSERVER machine i386 cpu I686_CPU ident TSERVER_6R makeoptions DEBUG=-g # Build kernel with gdb(1) debug symbols options SCHED_4BSD # 4BSD scheduler options PREEMPTION # Enable kernel thread preemption options INET # InterNETworking options INET6 # IPv6 communications protocols options FFS # Berkeley Fast Filesystem options SOFTUPDATES # Enable FFS soft updates support options UFS_ACL # Support for access control lists options UFS_DIRHASH # Improve performance on big directories options NFSCLIENT # Network Filesystem Client options NFSSERVER # Network Filesystem Server options NFS_ROOT # NFS usable as /, requires NFSCLIENT options MSDOSFS # MSDOS Filesystem options PROCFS # Process filesystem (requires PSEUDOFS) options PSEUDOFS # Pseudo-filesystem framework options GEOM_GPT # GUID Partition Tables. options COMPAT_43 # Compatible with BSD 4.3 [KEEP THIS!] options SCSI_DELAY=5000 # Delay (in ms) before probing SCSI options KTRACE # ktrace(1) support options SYSVSHM # SYSV-style shared memory options SYSVMSG # SYSV-style message queues options SYSVSEM # SYSV-style semaphores options _KPOSIX_PRIORITY_SCHEDULING # POSIX P1003_1B real-time extensions options KBD_INSTALL_CDEV # install a CDEV entry in /dev options AHC_REG_PRETTY_PRINT # Print register bitfields in debug # output. No disk recognized and PATA disk controller is badly recognied ad SATA150 disk controller. >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Nov 21 11:02:42 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 92A8A16A41F for ; Mon, 21 Nov 2005 11:02:42 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7AB8343D6A for ; Mon, 21 Nov 2005 11:02:32 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (peter@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id jALB2Wqr090046 for ; Mon, 21 Nov 2005 11:02:32 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: (from peter@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id jALB2UIC090040 for freebsd-i386@freebsd.org; Mon, 21 Nov 2005 11:02:30 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Date: Mon, 21 Nov 2005 11:02:30 GMT Message-Id: <200511211102.jALB2UIC090040@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: peter set sender to owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Current problem reports assigned to you X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 21 Nov 2005 11:02:42 -0000 Current FreeBSD problem reports Critical problems S Submitted Tracker Resp. The problem did not exist with 6.0-release, it has been caused by some code change between -release and Nov 10th sources. Disabling cmbat with debug.acpi.disabled avoids the laptop to hang. From: Arthur Hartwig To: bug-followup@FreeBSD.org, Francis.Dupont@enst-bretagne.fr Cc: Subject: Re: i386/89296: Spurious atapci1: failed to enable memory mapping! on ICH7 Date: Tue, 22 Nov 2005 16:51:40 +1000 I also saw this on my Gigabyte GA-*i945P-G motherboard which has an ICH7. The message is printed as a result of a bus_alloc_resource_any() call in ata_intel_chipinit() in ata-chipset.c. The offending call is /* SATA parts can be either compat or AHCI */ else { /* if we have BAR(5) as a memory resource we should use AHCI mode */ ctlr->r_type2 = SYS_RES_MEMORY; ctlr->r_rid2 =PCIR_BAR(5); if ((ctlr->r_res2 = bus_alloc_resource_any(dev, ctlr->r_type2, &ctlr->r_rid2, RF_ACTIVE))) { The bus_alloc_resource_any() call winds up in pci_alloc_resource() in dev/pci/pci.c which sees the RF_ACTIVE flag is set and triies to enable memory space access by calling PCI_ENABLE_IO() to set the appropriate bit in the PCIR_COMMAND register of the ATA controller. Unfortunately the memory space enable bit in the ICH7 ATA controller on my motherboard is hardwired to 0 unless the SCRAE bit is one. So the ATA driver could be changed to stop this message appearing but I think the logic in pci_alloc_resource() is flawed - it should not be attempting to enable memory or i/o access UNTIL it has successfully allocated the requested resource. Suggested fix: change pci_alloc_resource() to read as follows: struct resource * pci_alloc_resource(device_t dev, device_t child, int type, int *rid, u_long start, u_long end, u_long count, u_int flags) { struct pci_devinfo *dinfo = device_get_ivars(child); struct resource_list *rl = &dinfo->resources; struct resource_list_entry *rle; pcicfgregs *cfg = &dinfo->cfg; /* * Perform lazy resource allocation */ if (device_get_parent(child) == dev) { switch (type) { case SYS_RES_IRQ: /* * If the child device doesn't have an * interrupt routed and is deserving of an * interrupt, try to assign it one. */ if (!PCI_INTERRUPT_VALID(cfg->intline) && (cfg->intpin != 0)) pci_assign_interrupt(dev, child, 0); break; case SYS_RES_IOPORT: case SYS_RES_MEMORY: rle = resource_list_find(rl, type, *rid); if (rle == NULL) return (pci_alloc_map(dev, child, type, rid, start, end, count, flags)); break; } /* * If we've already allocated the resource, then * return it now. But first we may need to activate * it, since we don't allocate the resource as active * above. Normally this would be done down in the * nexus, but since we short-circuit that path we have * to do its job here. Not sure if we should free the * resource if it fails to activate. */ rle = resource_list_find(rl, type, *rid); if (rle != NULL && rle->res != NULL) { if (bootverbose) device_printf(child, "Reserved %#lx bytes for rid %#x type %d at %#lx\n", rman_get_size(rle->res), *rid, type, rman_get_start(rle->res)); /* * Enable IO mode only if the matching resource is * successfully activated else the PCI_ENABLE_IO might * fail and report the failre when it doesn't matter. */ if (flags & RF_ACTIVE) { if (bus_generic_activate_resource(dev, child, type, *rid, rle->res) != 0) return NULL; else PCI_ENABLE_IO(dev, child, type); } return (rle->res); } } return (resource_list_alloc(rl, dev, child, type, rid, start, end, count, flags)); } I built a kernel with this change, booted it and the memory mapping failure message was gone. All devices seemed to work but I was left wondering if the return in the SYS_RES_MEMORY and SYS_RES_IOPORT case also needs a call to bus_generic_activate_resource() and PCI_ENABLE_IO(). The CDROM is connected as the SLAVE device on the SECONDARY IDE channel of the Intel ICH7. A verbose boot showed that the slave device was not being tested on the two IDE channels off the ICH7 and a debugging session showed ATA_NO_SLAVE was being set (erroneously) in the ata_channel structures associated with the ICH7. Fix: In ata_intel_reset() in ata-chipset.c treat ICH6 and ICH7 the same: > diff -b -C 3 ata-chipset.c.orig ata-chipset.c *** ata-chipset.c.orig Tue Nov 22 11:41:06 2005 --- ata-chipset.c Tue Nov 22 11:48:25 2005 *************** *** 1848,1854 **** /* ICH6 has 4 SATA ports as master/slave on 2 channels so deal with pairs */ if (ctlr->chip->chipid == ATA_I82801FB_S1 || ctlr->chip->chipid == ATA_I82801FB_R1 || ! ctlr->chip->chipid == ATA_I82801FB_M) { mask = (0x0005 << ch->unit); } else { --- 1848,1855 ---- /* ICH6 has 4 SATA ports as master/slave on 2 channels so deal with pairs */ if (ctlr->chip->chipid == ATA_I82801FB_S1 || ctlr->chip->chipid == ATA_I82801FB_R1 || ! ctlr->chip->chipid == ATA_I82801FB_M || ! ctlr->chip->chipid == ATA_I82801GB_S1) { mask = (0x0005 << ch->unit); } else { but this should be generalised to cope with all the ICH7 variants. It would probably be even better to rearrange the logic to better cope with all the ICH variants in a more transparent way. (From the comments, the current code seems to assume that if the ICH is not an ICH6 then it must be an ICH5). After making this change and rebuilding the kernel the CDROM was found and its details reported. I have a system which ran extremely reliably under RELENG_5 (from 5.3-RELEASE onwards). The machine suffers from frequent hard lockups when running a RELENG_6 kernel. The problem can be entirely worked around by disabling ACPI ("hint.acpi.0.disabled=1" in /boot/loader.conf). No such precaution was necessary with a RELENG_5 kernel. The system is an AMD Athlon XP 2500+ processor on an Abit NF-7S v2 motherboard, with BIOS version "nVidia-nForce-6A61BA1BC-26". The system has a HighPoint Rocket RAID 1640 SATA card which I suspect (but have not proven) to be implicated in the problems - freezes appear to be related to disk activity. I've tried building a kernel with GDB, INVARIENTS and WITNESS in an attempt to find out more, and not had any more success: the kernel still locks up, doesn't panic or output any more diagnostics when it does. I read that in windows/dos, this can be achieved by placing fdimage.exe and the 3 .flp files in the same directory and then type e.g. for the first disk: G:>fdimage boot.flp a: My floppies are perfectly fine, I've tried a dozen floppies in the last few days, but to no avail. When I try to read the floppies by typing a: (off course), windows claimes the floppies are not formatted all the time. Should I be able to read these floppies in a windows PC or not ? One thing is, I tried them as bootflopppies in this P166 and I doesn't do anything. During boot of the P166, it is always stuck in No /boot/loader > >How-To-Repeat: Try making bootfloppies in either windowsxp or archlinux machine. >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: >>> FreeBSD/i386 BOOT > Default: 0:ad(0,a)/boot/kernel/kernel > boot: I've tried many combinations instead, also fd(0,a) (I don't know what I'm doing :-) 2/ I've also tried to make the floppies on an Archlinux machine with the dd command. After I try to mount the floppy in linux, I always get the message "wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/floppy/0, missing codepage or other error ...try dmesg | tail" 3/ I've even been looking for alternative programs like "rawrite" and rawwritewin0.7 which claimes it works for WinXP. But is doesn't in my case. The programs works with .img files instead of .flp files that freebsd offers. Does anyone have an idea, what I'm doing wrong ? I think I'm doing what is documented.
