If you can get it to work, I'd say that option #1 is not selfish, but quite helpful for everyone else, indeed! Please give it a shot, the eclipse port is supposed to be compilable with jdk>=1.4. See the following lines in the port's Makefile: USE_JAVA= yes JAVA_VERSION= 1.4+ JAVA_OS= native You can start by changing the following line: ONLY_FOR_ARCHS= i386 in the same file, to: ONLY_FOR_ARCHS= i386 amd64 and see how far you get from there. Nobody has tried building eclipse for amd64 with jdk1.5 yet AFAIK, but that doesn't mean it can't be done. And of course, don't forget to post any patches you come up with :-) Cheers, Panagiotis From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Mar 27 18:40:53 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B674B16A4CE for ; Sun, 27 Mar 2005 18:40:53 +0000 (GMT) Received: from pd4mo3so.prod.shaw.ca (shawidc-mo1.cg.shawcable.net [24.71.223.10]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2B9BB43D39 for ; Sun, 27 Mar 2005 18:40:53 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from varju@webct.com) Received: from pd5mr6so.prod.shaw.ca (pd5mr6so-qfe3.prod.shaw.ca [10.0.141.182]) by l-daemon (Sun ONE Messaging Server 6.0 HotFix 1.01 (built Mar 15 2004)) with ESMTP id <0IE000JSSX84F4A0@l-daemon> for freebsd-java@freebsd.org; Sun, 27 Mar 2005 11:40:52 -0700 (MST) Received: from pn2ml7so.prod.shaw.ca ([10.0.121.151]) by pd5mr6so.prod.shaw.ca (Sun ONE Messaging Server 6.0 HotFix 1.01 (built Mar 15 2004)) with ESMTP id <0IE000M02X84A470@pd5mr6so.prod.shaw.ca> for freebsd-java@freebsd.org; Sun, 27 Mar 2005 11:40:52 -0700 (MST) Received: from alex.varju.ca (S010600095beeacbb.vc.shawcable.net [24.83.197.241]) by l-daemon (iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 HotFix 1.18 (built Jul 28 2003)) with ESMTP id <0IE000J0AX84A0@l-daemon> for freebsd-java@freebsd.org; Sun, 27 Mar 2005 11:40:52 -0700 (MST) Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1]) by alex.varju.ca with esmtp (Exim 4.50 (FreeBSD)) id 1DFcgu-000217-7D; Sun, 27 Mar 2005 10:40:52 -0800 Date: Sun, 27 Mar 2005 10:40:51 -0800 From: Alex Varju In-reply-to: <4246D3C5.5060303@ebs.gr> To: Panagiotis Astithas Message-id: <4246FE33.2090608@webct.com> MIME-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit X-Accept-Language: en-us, en References: <424490CD.9080203@chuckr.org> <4246D3C5.5060303@ebs.gr> User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0.2 (X11/20050325) cc: Chuck Robey cc: java Subject: Re: eclipse X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 27 Mar 2005 18:40:53 -0000 Panagiotis Astithas wrote: > If you can get it to work, I'd say that option #1 is not selfish, but > quite helpful for everyone else, indeed! Things seem to be going wrong in the native extensions, but I can't seem to get a decent stack trace out of it. Digging through the Eclipse code, it looks like they use different Java files for the native extensions when building Linux x86_64. I'll try to post my experiences in more detail later today. Alex. Hi Alex, I believe you cannot compile 32bit code into 64bit binary for SWT at the moment. We need a direct port for SWT-3.0.x-linux-gtk-amd64 for this to work at all. Do you know of any better candidate as the best java gui design tool, for the amd64 platform, given the current state of the art? I wouldn't necessarily restrict it to free software, but if they're pricing it so only large teams of programmers can afford it, that knocks them out also (it needs to be priiced so an individual such as you and I can afford it). I don't mind doing a porting job, I sometimes actually enjoy it, but I don't want to waste my time, either. I haven't managed to get a successful build running, but I've put together some notes of the progress I've made so far. I've rebuilt with this flag, and now have a working version of Eclipse on my AMD64 machine. There was a bug in my last patchset where the GTK file chooser window would not pop up when requested. Here is a new patchset that I think should solve this: http://www.varju.ca/alex/freebsd/eclipse-devel-3.1m5a-4.tgz Again, this is mainly targetted at AMD64 still. Hopefully I'll have time to clean things up so I can submit this as a generic eclipse-devel port. Alex. I'm basing my changes on the 3.1m5a sources, which is why I suggested an eclipse-devel port. Theoretically the changes I made could be done to the 3.0 sources, but things have changed enough between versions that it's probably not worth the effort. Alex. Some little remarks: In patch-build.xml you're using the linux-sun-jdk lib-dir. Is tehre a special reason for this? It seems to work just fine (well almost, see below) with the native jdk, so I see no real reason to do this. + I don't have a linux-jdk installed anymore, else I probably never would have noticed :) 2) in patch-build with all the if's [ "$os-$ws-$arch" = "hpux-motif-ia64" ] You left the last "]" out of there. (doesn't prevent it from working though) I've put the patch for these two changes online : http://studwww.ugent.be/~brvdboss/eclipse-devel/eclipse-devel.diff Unfortunately, the build is still failing on me (output from ant without the "-q" option below). Still, when I go that specific subdir and continue manually (just that pde subproject, prevent and from cleaning and run make again), it just works. I'll look a little further into it, but I don't immediately see what's wrong. I'll let you know as soon as (and if) I find out more. Eclipse does part of the build using their JDTCompilerAdapter, which only supports Java 1.4. Apparently Java 1.5 allows subclasses to refine a method's return type, and this feature is used withing the core libraries. JDTCompilerAdapter fails to compile FeatureWriter because of this. Until Eclipse supports native 1.5 builds, I'm not sure that there's anything we can do to improve things. > > 2) in patch-build with all the if's > [ "$os-$ws-$arch" = "hpux-motif-ia64" ] > > You left the last "]" out of there. Ah, I see. I'm not really familiar with the eclipse build-structure. > Until Eclipse supports native 1.5 builds, I'm not sure that there's > anything we can do to improve things. I've been staring a bit at it but can't really come up with a solution. The naïve me assumed the specified "target" and "source" options would be taking care of issues like that. I did check to make sure they are set to appropriate values everywhere, which seems to be the case. Doing that pde.build-part manually and continuing the build (without cleaning first ofcourse) seems to get me a working eclipse though. However that doesn't seem to be a decent path for a workaround though. Still, I'm very glad you got the port working :) Bruno
