You need to remove the HD to run the floppy based BIOS update. The problem is that the BIOS sees the FreeBSD partition as saved hibernation image. As such, it attempts to load it, instead of going through the normal boot sequence. I have a "eMagic CardBus fireWire 2P 6-pin dongleless" card. It shows up as a "VIA Fire II (VT6306)" card. I'm using it in a ThinkPad T41 laptop, and it works (tested with a couple of external harddisks). You have the same kind of trouble with MO, ZIP or any other removeable media devices. The problem is neither the device nor cam. It is GEOM that needs a trigger for rereading the new media. I can't imagine any device related brokenness that a CAM disconnect, which is a kernel internal thing, could work around. And no - If I issue an eject I want the drive to eject the media and nothing else, but since most flash drives have no motor eject this command can't physically do what is expected anyway. A CAM detach would be fine, but for general use - not for this case. -- B.Walter BWCT http://www.bwct.de bernd@bwct.de info@bwct.de From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Mar 24 15:44:56 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A81C216A4CE for ; Thu, 24 Mar 2005 15:44:56 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail23.sea5.speakeasy.net (mail23.sea5.speakeasy.net [69.17.117.25]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 71BCC43D1F for ; Thu, 24 Mar 2005 15:44:56 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jhb@FreeBSD.org) Received: (qmail 2163 invoked from network); 24 Mar 2005 15:44:56 -0000 Received: from server.baldwin.cx ([216.27.160.63]) (envelope-sender )AES256-SHA encrypted SMTP for ; 24 Mar 2005 15:44:54 -0000 Received: from [10.50.41.231] (gw1.twc.weather.com [216.133.140.1]) (authenticated bits=0) by server.baldwin.cx (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j2OFigNB069879; Thu, 24 Mar 2005 10:44:43 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from jhb@FreeBSD.org) From: John Baldwin To: freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.org Date: Thu, 24 Mar 2005 09:31:45 -0500 User-Agent: KMail/1.6.2 References: <4242939A.4010804@crank.org.uk> In-Reply-To: <4242939A.4010804@crank.org.uk> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Disposition: inline Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-Id: <200503240931.45483.jhb@FreeBSD.org> X-Spam-Status: No, score=-102.8 required=4.2 tests=ALL_TRUSTED, USER_IN_WHITELIST autolearn=failed version=3.0.2 X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.0.2 (2004-11-16) on server.baldwin.cx cc: Chris Reece Subject: Re: Toshiba A40 and acpi_toshiba. I would be extremely surprised if a "camcontrol eject cd0" removed /dev/cd0 :) Eject is for devices whose media can be removed, but the device itself stays. Or are you just saying detach should do an eject (possibly a stop also) first? -- Dan Nelson dnelson@allantgroup.com From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Mar 24 20:13:43 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id ED4FD16A4CE; Thu, 24 Mar 2005 20:13:43 +0000 (GMT) Received: from pooker.samsco.org (pooker.samsco.org [168.103.85.57]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7DD4B43D31; Thu, 24 Mar 2005 20:13:43 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from scottl@samsco.org) Received: from [192.168.254.11] (junior-wifi.samsco.home [192.168.254.11]) (authenticated bits=0) by pooker.samsco.org (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j2OKC2Mm075663; Thu, 24 Mar 2005 13:12:02 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from scottl@samsco.org) Message-ID: <42431EC6.1020303@samsco.org> Date: Thu, 24 Mar 2005 13:10:46 -0700 From: Scott Long User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; FreeBSD i386; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20050218 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Dan Nelson References: <1110800717.1296.19.camel@localhost> <200503231411.46948.jhb@FreeBSD.org> <20050323154642.J37251@sasami.jurai.net> <42421D8D.5060502@elischer.org> <20050323205841.N37251@sasami.jurai.net> <77e48641fc04164b4c81cce75c42a38b@FreeBSD.org> <42431806.3060302@elischer.org> <20050324195628.GC10908@dan.emsphone.com> In-Reply-To: <20050324195628.GC10908@dan.emsphone.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Spam-Status: No, score=-2.8 required=3.8 tests=ALL_TRUSTED autolearn=failed version=3.0.2 X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 3.0.2 (2004-11-16) on pooker.samsco.org cc: Vladimir Grebenschikov cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org cc: Julian Elischer cc: "Matthew N. The 'stop' and 'eject' actions of camcontrol operate in the context of how they are defined in the SCSI world. That is, they send a particular command to the target that makes the target do the intended action. They do __not__ imply that CAM will detach the logical device, flush the buffer-cache, etc. There is a whole lot less magic here than I think that everyone is hoping for. I asume the confusion is what people think of removeable media these days. In traditional cases such as MO, Syquest, ZIP and CD things were clear. The media is a cartridge or just a disk and the drive is a physical think that holds the media and make noise when accessing it. Today many people use USB flash memory sticks were they think to just remove the media, but in fact remove the whole drive containing an unremoveable media in the same way they would do when unplugging an USB HDD. But the problem is not with USB memory sticks, the problem is with USB flash card readers, where in fact the media itself is changeable and the problem is not related to USB but with removeable disk media in general. GEOM just don't rereads the media unless you explizitly trigger this. Of course a freshly attached drive is enough to inpect the media in it. If you forget and use outdated cached data you even risk data corruption. I don't have a good idea on how to handle the whole story. Disk drive have a way to tell about a media change, but GEOM seem to ignores this and many flash card readers don't even tell. -- B.Walter BWCT http://www.bwct.de bernd@bwct.de info@bwct.de From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Mar 25 11:46:25 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7ED2816A4D3; Fri, 25 Mar 2005 11:46:25 +0000 (GMT) Received: from citadel.icyb.net.ua (citadel.icyb.net.ua [212.40.38.140]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 48B4B43D55; Fri, 25 Mar 2005 11:46:23 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from avg@icyb.net.ua) Received: from [212.40.38.87] (oddity-e.topspin.kiev.ua [212.40.38.87]) by citadel.icyb.net.ua (8.8.8p3/ICyb-2.3exp) with ESMTP id NAA26847; Fri, 25 Mar 2005 13:45:58 +0200 (EET) (envelope-from avg@icyb.net.ua) Message-ID: <4243F9F6.80705@icyb.net.ua> Date: Fri, 25 Mar 2005 13:45:58 +0200 From: Andriy Gapon User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 (X11/20050319) X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: ticso@cicely.de References: <1110828259.00257351.1110817801@10.7.7.3> <1111618398.00264139.1111606806@10.7.7.3> <1111623827.00264191.1111611602@10.7.7.3> <1111641810.00264364.1111629601@10.7.7.3> <1111641842.00264366.1111630202@10.7.7.3> <1111649011.00264410.1111637401@10.7.7.3> <1111704826.00264812.1111693801@10.7.7.3> <1111704850.00264829.1111694406@10.7.7.3> <1111706612.00264847.1111695603@10.7.7.3> <1111710307.00264895.1111699801@10.7.7.3> In-Reply-To: <1111710307.00264895.1111699801@10.7.7.3> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: Scott Long cc: "current@freebsd.org" cc: Vladimir Grebenschikov cc: Dan Nelson cc: "Matthew N. Recently I bought one of those Sony Ericsson GC85 cards hoping it could replace the serial cable and my cell phone connected to my laptop. Unfortunatly it does not seem to work very well. The card is recognized as a generic modem on the pcmcia bus, and shows up as a cuaa (sio) device. I can talk to it without problems with cu and minicom. I've configured ppp to call my local ISP (Telenor) with GPRS. That works in some way. My modem gets connected and I can ping other hosts and do simple telnet commands to get data from webservers and other services. But, when connecting with ssh it just hangs. That happens when I try to get compressed data from the network as well. Some data: I'm running 4.11-STABLE on a Acer Travelmate 630 series laptop. The output from pccardd from startup shows this line after adding the sio-device as a generic modem: sio2: unable to activate interrupt in fast mode - using normal mode When trying to do some activity on the network after connecting this messages shows up in my log: sio2: xxx more interrupt-level buffer overflows (total xxx) (xxx is a number) I've read a lot of documentation on the net about this issue, and I think I've tried most of the tips and tricks suggested. I tried to change the irq assigned for the card without luck, I have set the cp4ticks to 4096 in sio.c (that removed the interrupt-level buffer overflows in the log, but then network still don't work as it should), I changed the list of available irqs in pccard.conf, and I really don't know what to do next. The irq seems to be hardcoded to 3, but in Windows it shows up with irq 7, which in the FreeBSD log I get a message like this: stray irq 7. The card works well in Windows, so I don't think is a hardware problem. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on how to get this card to work properly with FreeBSD? Has anyone managed to get this card, or some of the other Sony-Ericsson GC-cards, to work at all with FreeBSD? Another one with the same problem as I (I guess) can be found here: http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/htdig/freebsd-mobile/2004-May/003813.html PS. The reason why I don't run FreeBSD 5 is that it just don't work on thia laptop at all. regards, Espen Tagestad
