Are the startx-launched and kdm-launched X daemons using the same config file? Check the top of /var/log/Xorg.*.log for sure. If you ran "X -configure" at some point it might be using a config out of your home directory and not in one of the system locations. When you put the 5.4 CD-ROM in and boot up, the machine powers down shortly after you leave the beastie boot menu. Workaround: You need a version of the patch originated by Jung-uk Kim (http://docs.freebsd.org/cgi/mid.cgi?200407021130.58247.jkim). But you can't apply the patch until after you install the system, but you can't install the system until ... (etc., etc.). I have posted a patched version of the kernel TEMPORARILY at: http://www.m5p.com/freebsd/kernel-5.4-r3000.tar.bz2 (My version of the patch, attached, is slightly different from the original version and disables the keyboard controller test under the control of a device hint.) Here is how you can use this patched kernel, after logging in as root: A. Unpack the contents of a FreeBSD CD-ROM in some temporary space. For example, mount the CD-ROM on /cdrom and make a directory /usr/tmp/5.4. Then cd to /usr/tmp/5.4 and do: (cd /cdrom, gtar cvf - .) | gtar xvfp - B. Replace the distributed kernel with the patched kernel. cd /usr/tmp/5.4/boot/kernel mv kernel kernel.orig tar xvfy kernel-5.4-r3000.tar.bz2 C. cd to /usr/tmp/5.4/boot. Add the lines: hint.atkbdtest.0.disabled="1" hint.acpi.0.disabled="1" to the end of the file loader.conf (unless you know that ACPI works on your R3000). D. cd to /usr/tmp/5.4 and burn a new CD-ROM with this command: mkisofs -R -b boot/cdboot -no-emul-boot . | burncd data - fixate E. Install with the patched CD-ROM. Install in the usual way. But after the base distribution has been extracted, go to the emergency holographic shell (ALT-F4) and replace the kernel which was just installed with the patched kernel: cp /dist/boot/kernel/kernel /boot/kernel You should now have a working system. Once the install is completed, enable sshd, reboot and use the DSDT patch with an ACPI dump. That will allow the machine to work properly. I can confirm this procedure works on FreeBSD 5.4 RELEASE. Therefore I highly suspect that the execution of moused in some way overlaps with the execution of autologin kdm at boot time causing the malfunctioning mousepad behaviour. Now I'm trying to delay a bit the execution of kdm by adding something like ttyv8 "/bin/sleep 2;/usr/local/bin/kdm -nodaemon" xterm on secure ttyv8 "/bin/sleep 2 && /usr/local/bin/kdm -nodaemon" xterm on secure but FreeBSD doesn't seem to like either: it doesn't execute kdm and issue a warning about a delay of 60 seconds?????? How could I delay a bit the autologin kdm? It's a graphical installer with a bunch of stuff prebuilt based on FreeBSD 5.3. I'm running it very nicely on my Sony laptop, got wireless working and all. The only issue is the problem of the onboard sound. I've been looking on the groups and am having a hard time finding a solution. My system detects the device as pcm0 and a cat /dev/sndstat returns information on the sound card. Mixer settings are fine as well. I'm also using /boot/loader.conf snd_ich_load="YES" and the module shows up just fine. I've also built a kernel with sound and am loading the sound.ko kernel module When running applications, such as XMMS, I can see the EQ bouncing so sound is playing, but there is no sound coming out of the speakers at all. I can't figure it out for the life of me. Anyone have any tips? Someone may have better information, but I believe that only the 802.11b flavors of the Prism are supported. I'm pretty sure that 802.11g is only available on Prism (same name but not the same interface). It SHOULD work with ndis, though. You will need the Windows driver installation software to configure and load the ndis driver. I believe ndis is available with both Current and 5.4. -- R. Anything marked "108Mbps" is an Atheros part (108 = 2x54 = Atheros Turbo mode). Unfortunately the poster requested support for "5.2/similar" and the 5.x systems have old ath support which may not work with their card. I'm considering backporting the card support (only) to 5.x later in the year but for now -current is the only place to get support for all available Atheros parts. Now at boot time I enabled moused # ps ax|grep moused 493 ?? Apologies in advance for crossposting. It has been some time since I tried to use S3 (I think the last time was about 4.6-RELEASE or so) and I've never tried it with ACPI before now. I had swapped out the graphics card and that confused the BIOS on resume causing a shutdown, but for various reasons I have now replaced the original card and want to get suspend working again. I've seen the typical "it comes back from suspend and then immediately reboots" but found that this behavior goes away if I set: hw.acpi.reset_video: 0 Likewise, on the console I get the screen showing all white during suspend and on resume it turns the backlight off. I can toggle it back on using acpi_video sysctls for the lcd and the problem is nonexistent if I suspend under X and issue a dpms command beforehand to force the lcd off. On the whole I'm quite pleased with the resume capability (I'm mostly in X anyway) -- X, usb, mouse, pcmcia wireless, sound, keyboard, and everything else come up flawlessly. I discovered a potentially fatal issue, though. It appears the processor is running full throttle and in suspension there is no cooling. I'm lucky I noticed this last night before I went to bed -- I might have ended up with a smoking pile of molten electronics and quite possibly a fire. By the time I noticed it was very hot indeed and the electronics/plastics were beginning to outgas... I quad boot the machine (WinME, FBSD 5.3R, FBSD 5.4R, FBSD 5.4R) and the behavior is the same under both 5.3R and 5.4R (other than fxp0 dying under 5.3R). WinME isn't giving me an option for anything other than StandBy at the moment so I can't test it there though it seemed to work fine when I triggered it from DOS (booted from floppy). I have a custom kernel under 5.3 and just GENERIC under 5.4 (haven't configured it yet). My first thought was that the hlt instruction wasn't being issued but a quick check brings up: machdep.cpu_idle_hlt: 1 Can anyone offer advice? I'm running the latest revision of the BIOS (A23) and will be happy to post the asl on request. If I use # acpiconf -s 3 they are executed properly. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.1 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFCjdCWfMDIb41/+S0RAjpzAJ9afaYLySH3km3H/KbdfV0UNIV/hQCcCh9K SW8yh9DuQtI2oqKuoKsmrzg= =y1lR -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Fri May 20 16:58:31 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4F88216A4CE for ; Fri, 20 May 2005 16:58:31 +0000 (GMT) Received: from isis.bgp4.net (isis.bgp4.net [66.246.197.72]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AA53343DB4 for ; Fri, 20 May 2005 16:58:30 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ciscogeek@bgp4.net) Received: from [192.168.23.2] (c-67-160-127-194.hsd1.wa.comcast.net [67.160.127.194]) (authenticated bits=0) by isis.bgp4.net (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j4KGx15p034446 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-DSS-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO) for ; Fri, 20 May 2005 09:59:02 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from ciscogeek@bgp4.net) Message-ID: <428E1741.1010405@bgp4.net> Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 09:58:41 -0700 From: Janet Sullivan User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0.4 (Windows/20050519) X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: ndis WPA-PSK on 5.4? So, the problem is that we turn on the memory BARs by default. Note that the BAR has a base address of 0, so I wonder if it starts "answering" to mem access to low memory. Note it has a range of 27 bits, or 128 MB. We could probably just move the check for a base of 0 up above the pci_enable_io_modes code to do that. Anyway I did the same thing and yesterday and my kernel wouldn't boot as well. Anyway after some trial and error I recognized the problem was not /boot/kernel/kernel, but /boot/loader. So I just replaced /boot/loader with /boot/loader.old and can now run my ~ pentium-m kernel. This is what I do when I build a kernel now: I set CPUTYPE?=p3 in /etc/make.conf # cd /usr/src # make buildkernel KERNCONF=MYKERNEL # make installkernel KERNCONF=MYKERNEL # cp /boot/loader /boot/loader.p3 Now I set CPUTYPE?=pentium-m in /etc/make.conf # cd /usr/src # make buildkernel KERNCONF=MYKERNEL # make installkernel KERNCONF=MYKERNEL # mv /boot/loader /boot/loader.pentium-m # cp /boot/loader.p3 /boot/loader Done.
