I'm writing this on a Dell Inspiron with 7.0-CURRENT, and the touch pad works fine on that version, also 6.0 and 5.4. You might like to check my online diary round January of this year (http://www.lemis.com/grog/diary-jan2005.html) where I had some issues of this nature with an Inspiron 1100. I solved them by setting a flag in the device.hints file IIRC. I recently purchased a new (Fujitsu-Siemens) Amilo M3438G laptop and I am facing some difficulties in installing FreeBSD on it. I know this is not a "recommended" laptop to use with FreeBSD because it is considered more of a "multimedia" laptop rather than a "professional" one and thus it is destined to work mainly with Microsoft. The main problem I face is with its built in VIA RAID controller (VT6421). I get a number of LBA read/write errors. The installation can't find the mount points and though it is working, it does so with many problems (I/O errors, core dumps etc). I'd like to get a reply from people having the same laptop (if any), just to know what they did in order for the FreeBSD to run. Should I send a mail to VIA for the driver support? Or am I doing a mistake during the installation (could use a kld module perhaps? or vinum and GEOM correctly configured do the trick?). Any replies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Usually, the notebook is plugged into a docking station that features an analog and a digital output (so does the flat screen on my desk). I modified my xorg.conf to reflect the new settings, but i only manage to get the analog output to work. The T40 was able to use the DVI port. The digital output is working fine when booting, but at the same moment the X server is starting, the DVI display disappears and i need to switch to the analog output channel. I checked some hints from several lists and from the thinkwiki.org, but wasn't able to find any working solution yet. My current xorg.conf is attached. Any hints on what i could have made wrong here are really appreciated by my eyes (which have some kind of problem in working hours with the analog screen...). -- Le deagh dh=F9raghd, Frank Altpeter Two of the most famous products of Berkeley are LSD and Unix. I upgraded my T42 to -current from the 6.0 release kernel but from what I remember it worked fine with suspend/resume if acpi_video.ko was loaded at boot time. My T42 has Radeon M7 -- not sure if that makes a difference. If I want DRM (for openGL) the T42 has to be booted without acpi_video.ko. And then I usually forget and put the laptop to sleep => instant reboot on wakeup! When I upgraded to -current I did not make any changes with X11. When I boot from the install-cd it shows a line like 'blabla xircom nic/modem found blabla' and then hangs. I installed without the card inserted. When booted I did a 'tail -f /var/log/message' and inserted the card. The same line appears and again the system hangs. Even CTRL-ALT-DEL is not working. I found this: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=xe&sektion=4&manpath=FreeBSD+6.0-RELEASE which says: "BUGS Supported devices will fail to attach on some machines using the NEWCARD PC Card framework. I hope to MFC the current stuff soon." this link: http://gerda.univie.ac.at/freebsd-laptops/index.pl?action=show_laptop_detail&laptop=397 says that it should work with 5.4. In the 6.0 release notes I found: "Support for the OLDCARD subsystem has been removed. The NEWCARD system is now used for all PCCARD device support." So I cannot use OLDCARD because it is unavailable in 6.0. I cannot use NEWCARD either, because it does not work correctly (see the message of Warner). Or is Warner's message already outdated and is there a way to get it working? Or should I try CURRENT? Hope anyone can help, much thanks in advance! First, you really want to install and use radeontool. It can properly turn off the Radeon display, backlight, and DAC which (as far as i know) xorg does not. It also does better than jhb's patch to acpi_video. (I suspect that the patch does not turn off the DAC.) You need to add acpi_video_load="YES" and probably want to add vesa_load="YES" and acpi_ibm_load="YES", although those are probably not related to your current problem. You may also need to add hw.acpi.reset_video=0 and hw.syscons.sc_no_suspend_vtswitch=1 to /etc/sysctl.conf. -- R. Kevin Oberman, Network Engineer Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) Ernest O. Since I was only using those for experimentation, I never modified my boot loader. My BIOS provides a boot menu for selecting the boot device, of which "external USB device" is an option. I found this cleaner, since when not using those devices I do not have to go through the FreeBSD boot menu. Hints? For my situation... I booted from the CD. When asked to slice and partition my disk... I chose the external USB device. I selected the 'standard boot loader'. Then the rest of the magic is handled by my BIOS. I had already acpi_ibm. I added acpi_video and acpi_vesa, with no visible improvement. But hw.syscons.sc_no_suspend_vtswitch=1 made the trick. At least it can now suspend... in most cases. It still fails to do so in random cases, mostly when there is disk activity. And even if it suspends correctly, I must still switch to the console and back by hand. As I wrote in my first mail, what is really strange is that everything works fine with a 6.0-RC1 kernel (without any special tuning!), whereas the changes are supposed to be very limited. So there should be a way to track down the problem... In particular, I didn't need acpi_video at all. My current solution is to keep an RC1 kernel, as there are no incompatibilities for the time being. Just in case, here are my loader.conf and sysctl.conf (working with RC1) /boot/loader.conf: acpi_ibm_load="YES" if_ath_load="YES" snd_ich_load="YES" umodem_load="YES" cpufreq_load="YES" hw.ata.atapi_dma="1" hw.cbb.start_memory="0xc0210000" hint.sio.0.disabled=1 hint.sio.1.disabled=1 /etc/sysctl.conf: hw.acpi.sleep_button_state=S3 hw.acpi.lid_switch_state=S3 Jacques --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jacques Garrigue Nagoya University garrigue at math.nagoya-u.ac.jp JG From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 15 07:21:54 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id ADA1216A41F for ; Tue, 15 Nov 2005 07:21:54 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from omar@biglist.com) Received: from biglist.com (biglist.com [216.220.107.226]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 32E0343D45 for ; Tue, 15 Nov 2005 07:21:53 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from omar@biglist.com) Received: (qmail 9911 invoked by uid 601); 15 Nov 2005 07:21:38 -0000 Date: Tue, 15 Nov 2005 02:21:38 -0500 From: Omar Thameen To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20051115072138.GA98269@biglist.com> References: <20051110170543.GN94294@biglist.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20051110170543.GN94294@biglist.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i Subject: Re: 5.4 on a Thinkpad 240 - help with apm, X X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 15 Nov 2005 07:21:54 -0000 A follow-up for the archives. 1) To get apm working, a) Compile apm into the kernel (can't use as a LKM) b) In /boot/loader.conf, hint.acpi.0.disabled="1" hint.apm.0.disabled="0" The 2nd line overrides a setting in /boot/device.hints . 2) The mouse problem was due to hardware - the silicon ribbon detached between the buttons and its connector under the keyboard. 3) On to bluetooth! Or is it just > an incompatibility that I'll have to live with? > > Thanks, > Graham. Get the latest copies of the files in src/sys/compat/ndis and src/sys/dev/if_ndis from the RELENG_6 branch. Note: you do _NOT_ have to update your entire system, just the files in these directories. The quickest way to do this is probably with anoncvs: % setenv CVSROOT anoncvs@anoncvs1.FreeBSD.org:/home/ncvs % cvs checkout -rRELENG_6 src/sys/compat/ndis src/sys/dev/if_ndis You can also use a mirror if you're outside the US. See http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/anoncvs.html for a list. Copy the files to src/sys/compat/ndis and src/sys/dev/if_ndis, then rebuild ndis.ko and if_ndis.ko: # cd /sys/modules/ndis # make; make install # cd /sus/modules/if_ndis # make; make install It should work then. I've been using the same driver on my dual Opteron amd64 box at home for the past week and it's been very stable (in SMP mode even): Nov 9 18:16:59 opteron kernel: ndis0: mem 0xe0210000-0xe0211fff irq 31 at device 1.0 on pci3 Nov 9 18:16:59 opteron kernel: ndis0: NDIS API version: 5.1 Nov 9 18:16:59 opteron kernel: fpudna in kernel mode! It looks like the anoncvs archive I pointed you to is out of date. Oh, I see now. The entry on that page I showed you for the primary server is wrong. It says this: * USA: freebsdanoncvs@anoncvs.FreeBSD.org:/home/ncvs (ssh only - no password) It should say this: * USA: anoncvs@anoncvs.FreeBSD.org:/home/ncvs (ssh only - no password) When I tried it, I used the broken version and it wouldn't let me do a checkout, so I gave you directions for using the mirror instead. But it looks like the mirror is stale. :( Try this instead: % setenv CVSROOT anoncvs@anoncvs.FreeBSD.org:/home/ncvs % cvs checkout -rRELENG_6 src/sys/compat/ndis src/sys/dev/if_ndis This time you should get the right sources. Once you get them, build ndis.ko and if_ndis.ko again like I said to before. Trust me, the code isn't broken: I'm using it right this second. :) You don't need to resort to using the laptop in x86 mode. -Bill -- ============================================================================= -Bill Paul (510) 749-2329 | Senior Engineer, Master of Unix-Fu wpaul@windriver.com | Wind River Systems ============================================================================= you're just BEGGING to face the moose ============================================================================= > g. > From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Nov 18 10:20:37 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9898816A41F for ; Fri, 18 Nov 2005 10:20:37 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from frank.altpeter@gmail.com) Received: from zproxy.gmail.com (zproxy.gmail.com [64.233.162.197]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E7F7D43D53 for ; Fri, 18 Nov 2005 10:20:36 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from frank.altpeter@gmail.com) Received: by zproxy.gmail.com with SMTP id r28so151607nza for ; Fri, 18 Nov 2005 02:20:36 -0800 (PST) DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=beta; d=gmail.com; h=received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition:references; b=YDc6D5K3LmLv1MazNOqRRjuQajBD5y8UnGpRM59ACjJdY9s5GoFTltUux0oFZCBtQeE10Ck1dWSN14EyfqN0E9B0/i7hfaAT3LyccHGUJ6YUvRsFHtSbU5qMIZoXD9jOaLtojsBx+y/zW3ylRdNyhRja3vDEPpayq46K7+M1s7o= Received: by 10.65.244.6 with SMTP id w6mr3468023qbr; Fri, 18 Nov 2005 02:20:36 -0800 (PST) Received: by 10.65.145.16 with HTTP; Fri, 18 Nov 2005 02:20:36 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: Date: Fri, 18 Nov 2005 11:20:36 +0100 From: Frank Altpeter To: mobile@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: <20051111101636.7eb29f76.torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: inline References: <20051111010856.4778aa3a.torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no> <437416D2.3080809@roq.com> <20051111101636.7eb29f76.torfinn.ingolfsen@broadpark.no> Cc: Subject: Re: 6.0 and wireless setup - documentation? Well, i'm running the ipw module and my AP is doing WEP only. So i configured the following: [/boot/loader.conf] wlan_load=3DYES wlan_wep_load=3DYES if_ipw_load=3DYES [/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf] ctrl_interface=3D/var/run/wpa_supplicant ctrl_interface_group=3Dwheel network=3D{ ssid=3D"my_ssid_here" scan_ssid=3D1 key_mgmt=3DNONE wep_key0=3D8a2be2bf33f099cdcca3ff2fab wep_tx_keyidx=3D0 auth_alg=3DSHARED group=3DWEP104 priority=3D1 } (Random bits in key modified) The network configuration is proven to be working, since i can connect if i use these settings to manually ifconfig ipw0. But, when using "wpa_supplicant -d -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -i ipw0", i get only the following error output: Received 0 bytes of scan results (2 BSSes) Scan results: 2 Selecting BSS from priority group 2 0: 00:0f:3d:84:95:fa ssid=3D'CK' wpa_ie_len=3D24 rsn_ie_len=3D0 skip - SSID mismatch 1: 00:11:95:41:d5:c5 ssid=3D'my_ssid_here' wpa_ie_len=3D0 rsn_ie_len=3D0 skip - no WPA/RSN IE Selecting BSS from priority group 1 0: 00:0f:3d:84:95:fa ssid=3D'CK' wpa_ie_len=3D24 rsn_ie_len=3D0 skip - SSID mismatch 1: 00:11:95:41:d5:c5 ssid=3D'my_ssid_here' wpa_ie_len=3D0 rsn_ie_len=3D0 skip - no WPA/RSN IE selected non-WPA AP 00:11:95:41:d5:c5 ssid=3D'my_ssid_here' Trying to associate with 00:11:95:41:d5:c5 (SSID=3D'my_ssid_here' freq=3D24= 37 MHz) Cancelling scan request Automatic auth_alg selection: 0x1 Overriding auth_alg selection: 0x2 wpa_driver_bsd_del_key: keyidx=3D0 wpa_driver_bsd_del_key: keyidx=3D1 wpa_driver_bsd_del_key: keyidx=3D2 wpa_driver_bsd_del_key: keyidx=3D3 wpa_driver_bsd_del_key: addr=3D00:11:95:41:d5:c5 keyidx=3D0 wpa_driver_bsd_set_key: alg=3DWEP addr=3Dff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff key_idx=3D0 set_tx=3D1 seq_len=3D0 key_len=3D13 wpa_driver_bsd_set_drop_unencrypted: enabled=3D1 wpa_driver_bsd_associate: ssid 'my_ssid_here' wpa ie len 0 pairwise 4 group 4 key mgmt 2 wpa_driver_bsd_associate: set PRIVACY 1 Setting authentication timeout: 5 sec 0 usec EAPOL: External notification - portControl=3DForceAuthorized But, as said, if using ifconfig it works fine: # ifconfig ipw0 ssid my_ssid_here wepmode on authmode shared weptxkey 1 wepkey 0x8a2be2bf33f099cdcca3ff2fab channel 6 # dhclient ipw0 =3D=3D> online Any hints on that? I have ath0 working by adding WPA and DHCP to an ifconfig_ath0 line in /etc/rc.conf. em0 almost works by putting DHCP into an ifconfig_em0 line (dhclient doesn't always die when I pull the cable, I had similar problems with fxp0 on an older sony, Brooks is helping with it). Here's my question: I'd like to be able to specify a general configuration (e.g. WPA and DHCP for ath0, DHCP for em0), but not have them come up automagically. I'm content running a command (I figure I'll eventually tie the command to buttons via acpi_ibm), and adding ifconfig_{ath,em}0 lines to /etc/rc.conf and running /etc/rc.d/netif start {ath0, em0} by hand seems to work. The problem is that I can't seem to keep all of the interfaces from automagically configuring. I've tried playing with setting network_interfaces="" and "lo0", but the others still come up. What's the 6.0 state of the art for setting up a laptop that runs around a lot? Thanks, g. Mobile portable devices have outnumbered already traditional desktop computers and will mould the view of computers future generations will have. * service-oriented computing is viewed by many analysts as the computing paradigm of the near future. It allows for the dynamic integration of functionality provided by different parties. * research on ontologies, in particular in connection with work on the semantic web and semantic web services allows for machine understandable description of functionality and for automatic interaction of devices without the need for human involvement. The proposed workshop investigates how mobile computing can benefit from service-orientation and ontologies and vice versa. The vision is to extend the typically rather limited capabilities of mobile devices by using services offered by other devices, network providers or third parties. Adding ontologies to this scenario allows this extension to be transparent to the human user. GENERAL OVERVIEW Today, computers are changing from big, grey, and noisy things on our desks to small, portable, and ever networked devices most of us are carrying around. This new form of mobility imposes a shift in how we view computers and the way we work with them. In developing countries like India and China ‘Mobile Internet’ can become the only Internet a large portion of population will get access to. Services offer the possibility to overcome the limitations of individual mobile devices by making functionality offered by others available to them on an “as-needed” basis. Thus, using the service-oriented computing paradigm in mobile environments will considerably enlarge the variety of accessible applications and will enable new business opportunities in the mobile space by delivering integrated functionalities across wireless networks. Network hosted mobile services will allow mobile operators and third party mobile services provider to extend their businesses by making their network services available to a broader audience (e.g. developers, service providers, etc.); device hosted service will allow great potential for big innovations for applications and services that can be provided by individual mobile device owners. These mobile services offer functionalities and behaviors that can be described, advertised, discovered, and composed by others. Eventually, they will be able to interoperate even though they have not been designed to work together. This type of interoperability is based on the ability to understand other services and reason about their functionalities and behaviors when necessary. In this respect, mobile services can benefit from marrying the Semantic Web, which provides the infrastructure for the extensive usage of distributed knowledge, to be deployed for modeling services and add meaning, through ontologies, enabling lightweight discovery and composition of mobile services. The ability to appropriately combine mobility and semantic grounded data sharing has generated and is continuously triggering challenging questions in several areas of computer science, engineering and networking. This workshop aims to tackle the research problems around methods, concepts, models, languages and technologies that enable new opportunities in the mobile space through adoption, usage, and integration of mobile services and ontologies. Of particular interest are the methodologies and technologies that would allow automatic tasks to be performed with respect to mobile services and the use of ontologies in this context. This proposed workshop aims to bring together researchers and industry attendees addressing many of these issues, and promote and foster a greater understanding of mobile service and ontologies and their potential in enabling new business opportunities in the mobile space. TOPICS The following indicates the general focus of the workshop. However, related contributions are welcome as well. - architectures for mobile internet services - languages for describing mobile services - discovery and matchmaking of ontology based mobile services - adaptive selection of mobile services - ontology management in mobile environments - contracting and negotiation with ontology-based mobile services (service level agreements) - approaches to composition of ontology based mobile services - invocation, adaptive execution, monitoring, and management of mobile services - interaction protocols and conversation models for mobile services - ontology-based security and privacy issues in mobile services - mobile service applications - analysis and design approaches for mobile services - reasoning with mobile services - ontology-based policies for mobile services - tools for discovery, matchmaking, selection, mediation, composition, management, and monitoring of mobile services - mobile service development - multi agent systems and mobile services WORKSHOP FORMAT AND ATTENDANCE The program will occupy a full day, and will include presentations of papers selected from the full papers category (see 'submissions' below). Please note that at least one author of each accepted submission must attend the workshop. The MDM 2006 conference formalities are applied for fees and respective organizational aspects. Submission of a paper is not required for attendance at the workshop. However, in the event that the workshop cannot accommodate all who would like to participate, those who have submitted a paper (in any category) will be given priority for registration. SUBMISSIONS Two categories of submissions are solicited: (1) Full papers (up to 14 pages). (2) Position papers (up to 3 pages). All submissions should be formatted in the style of the Springer Publications format for Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS). For complete details, see http://www.springeronline.com/sgw/cda/frontpage/0,11855,5-164-2-72376-0,00.html All the papers should be submitted in electronic format using the link: http://www.easychair.org/MOSO06/submit/. Full papers will receive a peer-review. Position statements are intended to present very early or planned future work that is regarded as relevant to the workshop. Position statements are limited to 3 pages; position statements will not receive a peer-review. All accepted full papers as well as all position papers of attendees will be published in the workshop proceedings. Currently, the post-workshop proceedings are under negotiation with a major publisher (see further and up to date information on the workshop website).
