The Beastie logo was an old version; a new one has been uploaded. This is Chris' submission for the new logo. Ideally whatever we use for the new logo should be placed there. > The navigation bar at the top is nice, but you should feel free to > move away from the two vertical boxes on either sides that the current > site uses. At the moment, we'd like to work in small steps to keep diffs between our current repo and www to a minimum. If www@ says that this isn't an issue, we can certainly work on doing more with the actual presentation of the content. Before we want to start messing with potential redesigns of the site, though, we would probably benefit from taking the next step to moving the site from a tabular to a
based layout. > We have received a lot of criticism about the left box -- many people > feel that it is too cluttered, and that the links there could be > presented in a better way. This can be done with pure CSS in most browsers, which makes it very cool, clean and achievable feature. If we moved most of the left links into the top menu and moved the right panel over to the left, this would be doable. > Some of the information in the right hand box might be better listed > in the main content area, or maybe it can be moved to the left after > the number of links in the left box is reduced. Right! I think security updates should be moved to the top (or put in a very visible place); news under that, whatever. But this re-organization is part of step 2 or step 3. > As far as the logo, I don't like the use of all capital letters. > There is also a lot of whitespace above the letters to the level of > the top of the daemon's horns. Well, the logo is obviously something that will need to be figured out when the contest ends. The includes.header.sgml and includes.header.xsl are the only things that we have modified there. This is all being done in a private CVS repository, by the way. CVSWeb is viewable at: http://dragonfly.the-bofh.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi I can probably set up anoncvs access. A list of modified and added files that I can see immediately: en/freebsd.css en/index.css en/index.xsl en/gifs/freebsd-logo.gif share/sgml/includes.header.sgml share/sgml/includes.header.xsl At the moment, these are the only changes that I know of. Our stance on leaving the two navigation bars for the moment was that people (and the page) could get adjusted. If this all should just be done in one time, I suppose it'd be feasible to just not worry about patchset size. We're trying to keep it at a minimum for now. I suppose Chris and I can talk more about what changes we can make to the front page. I'm up for more radical changes, but we really need to look at giving it a better structure before we make huge changes, otherwise the layout will be really difficult to maintain. > > o Implement a FreeBSD.com? I think it would be nice to host these on FreeBSD.org as long as we are free to really place corporate-targetting content. I have several whitepapers that I can post (things I've written for Offmyserver). Again, this is something to be worked on later. > > What is the stance of core@ on this design? I think the best thing to do is to look through the archives for the last 3 months for posts about this from Ceri, Simon, and others. There are links to other designs and ideas. That is the best way to see who else is working on redesigns and how best to collaborate. There have been nice additions posted here and there, but nothing that all together made a huge improvement, so there is room for people to come in and take stock of the different ideas that have been posted and integrate the best components together. http://docs.freebsd.org/mail/archive/2005/freebsd-www/ I know that there is also some work in Perforce now, so maybe finding a recently built version of that work would be helpful. - Murray From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Mar 3 18:58:37 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0655816A4CE; Thu, 3 Mar 2005 18:58:37 +0000 (GMT) Received: from engine140.deployzone.net (engine140.deployzone.net [193.17.85.140]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 2C0D243D41; Thu, 3 Mar 2005 18:58:36 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from chris@czv.com) Received: from adsl-212-90-218-5.cybernet.ch [212.90.218.5] by engine140.deployzone.net; Thu, 3 Mar 2005 19:57:02 +0100 In-Reply-To: <1109872907.3932.227.camel@localhost.localdomain> References: <1109866064.3932.195.camel@localhost.localdomain> <20050303174802.GB40399@freebsdmall.com> <1109872907.3932.227.camel@localhost.localdomain> Mime-Version: 1.0 (Apple Message framework v619.2) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed Message-Id: Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit From: Chris Zumbrunn Date: Thu, 3 Mar 2005 19:58:33 +0100 To: "Devon H. I'll see if I can find a nice matching dark blue. The difficult thing about these headers is that they're actually made with a , so this isn't directly stylable. I'm going to go through the web site and clean these sorts of old-style HTML semantics up, remove HTML text display and formatting tags (except for the tables) and extend the stylesheets. If we change this, then of course this will impact pretty much every freebsd html page ever produced, including the Handbook etc. And because the color of these headlines in the Handbook is pretty much the only thing that still gives it the FreeBSD look and feel, that will be a BIG change. I'm not against changing this to a blue tone. But I wanted to point out the significance of that change. The alternative would be to use the same dark red tone for the logo, like I've done in previous mockups. Or maybe if we add slightly more yellow to that red tone in order to make it more complementary with the blue. Using a second color isn't necessarily a bad thing. If everything is in blue tones then it will be a VERY cool site ;-) > Chris, are you subscribed to www@? I just did. However, I am unable to locate these utilities on my local system, and in fact the local man pages bear this out. I also checked my local source for killall and did not find the -j option. Furthermore, the aac(4) man page, which I also happened to check online, is also out of sync with my local man pages. Therefore, either the 4.11-RELEASE man pages on the website are out of sync, or I miffed something in the upgrade (it's my first time upgrading). Since both uname and my local man pages indicate that the upgrade succeeded, I believe that the online man pages for 4.11-RELEASE are wrong. I have elevated the severity and priority of this issue because nothing on the website leads me to believe that its man pages should be less trustworthy than my local copies, and up to this point I have depended on them almost exclusively. >How-To-Repeat: 0) View jail(8) man page for 4.11-RELEASE online: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=jail&apropos=0&sektion=0&manpath=FreeBSD+4.11-RELEASE&format=html 1) Note the -i option. 2) Install FreeBSD 4.11-RELEASE. 3) View jail(8) man page locally. I don't think that we'll _have_ to change the handbook colors and such. It looks to me like the handbook has its own stylesheet, so this wouldn't necessarily _have_ to conform to our `new' colors. While blue is easy on the eye, I've also read things about that it's bad for the eye. Don't know how true that is. One thing that can be applied actually comes from one of the ugliest (but one of the most functional) UIs I know of: Rio from Plan 9. The colors in Rio are soft, natural colors that blend with each other. Its colors (http://plan9.bell-labs.com/plan9dist/screenshot.html) are quite nice and they contrast _very_ well. Perhaps experimenting with some of these colors would be nice. Also, there is nothing that says that we _must_ use one theme or the other. We can simply attach multiple stylesheets to the page (at least for the time being) and switch them around to see how they look. You can do this (in Firefox, anyway) with View->Page Style. I think at the moment, attaching multiple stylesheets is the best idea. > > Chris, are you subscribed to www@? I just did. > > Yes, I am :-) Marvelous. That's rule number one if you want to appear "professional" and more important than the design itself. Better to stick with the freebsd.org design that we have now than to introduce inconsistency. In my opinion, for consistency, the handbook for example would _have_ to conform to the new colors. The same would be true for the switch from a serif to a non-serif font. For that reason and because the dark red headlines are the most identifying corporate design element FreeBSD currently has (appart from the word FreeBSD and Beastie) it would probably be the smartest move to preserve that. If it isn't broken, don't fix it. The serif font is broken, the dark red isn't. /czv From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Mar 4 09:16:52 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C01EB16A4CE; Fri, 4 Mar 2005 09:16:52 +0000 (GMT) Received: from shrike.submonkey.net (cpc4-cdif3-6-1-cust116.cdif.cable.ntl.com [82.23.41.116]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 352D543D54; Fri, 4 Mar 2005 09:16:52 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from setantae@submonkey.net) Received: from setantae by shrike.submonkey.net with local (Exim 4.44 (FreeBSD)) id 1D78vS-0003L6-AR; Fri, 04 Mar 2005 09:16:50 +0000 Date: Fri, 4 Mar 2005 09:16:50 +0000 From: Ceri Davies To: "Devon H. My current branch of that code is already very different, thought I'm working on getting it to be a bit more friendly at lower screen resolutions. I don't think the diffs with the tags are very large, and they've helped keep the diffs with my really big modifications surprisingly small. --Devon From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Mar 4 17:34:47 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BEB0116A4CE for ; Fri, 4 Mar 2005 17:34:47 +0000 (GMT) Received: from smtpq3.home.nl (smtpq3.home.nl [213.51.128.198]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4095043D1D for ; Fri, 4 Mar 2005 17:34:47 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from dodell@sitetronics.com) Received: from [213.51.128.136] (port=57630 helo=smtp5.home.nl) by smtpq3.home.nl with esmtp (Exim 4.30) id 1D7GhK-0005ZD-Ep for www@FreeBSD.org; Fri, 04 Mar 2005 18:34:46 +0100 Received: from cc740438-a.deven1.ov.home.nl ([82.72.18.239]:34631 helo=192.168.1.104) by smtp5.home.nl with esmtp (Exim 4.30) id 1D7GhH-0003dZ-1Z for www@FreeBSD.org; Fri, 04 Mar 2005 18:34:43 +0100 From: "Devon H. The following has been done in my Perforce branch (and a full build is running so that it will be available at http://dragonfly.the-bofh.org/~dodell/en/index.html) o Total cleanup of HTML. The site is now
based. All colors and whatnot are given in CSS. o Removed the left navigation column and put contents in a `dropdown' menu up top. This menu could be fixed up to look a bit nicer... Ideas? o Moved news and press to the bottom of the main content. The main content could use a change. o Moved icons under left bar; they look better there IMO. o Stylized the footer. o Corrected a small error in the include.header.xsl which caused any XSL part of the site to have a nasty header. o Made two separate color themes for the site. More themes can be made styling the site in pretty much any way imaginable. I think that's about it. The include.header.sgml and include.header.xsl still need to be updated to use
s and so do _many_ of the subpages. This is a big piece of work. I see why nobody's jumped in yet ;). I know the dropdown menu has some quirks in Safari, but it should work in Firefox and IE. If you've a Perforce account, feel free to commit changes to my repo, but you won't be able to see the changes until I sync and issue a build. Further experimentation with colors would be nice. I expected this version to cut down on page size a bit, but it hasn't as much as I had hoped. The page is only 3K smaller at the moment, and the stylesheet adds an extra 4K. It should be possible to remove some unnecessary things and save a bit of bandwidth as well :) More to come soon! --Devon From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Mar 4 18:43:18 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7847216A4CE for ; Fri, 4 Mar 2005 18:43:18 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail.freebsdmall.com (ns1.freebsdmall.com [69.50.233.146]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3B32C43D3F for ; Fri, 4 Mar 2005 18:43:18 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from murray@freebsdmall.com) Received: by mail.freebsdmall.com (Postfix, from userid 2074) id 4BE811CDA4; Fri, 4 Mar 2005 10:58:39 -0800 (PST) Date: Fri, 4 Mar 2005 10:58:39 -0800 From: Murray Stokely To: "Devon H. I like the logo on the second level pages, such as : http://dragonfly.the-bofh.org/~dodell/en/docs.html It looks nice because the logo is integrated with the top navigation bar. On the front page, there is still too much open space in the upper left around the logo. It seems juxtaposed by the navigation bar instead of integrated. Maybe if the logo were somehow connected to the top navigation bar then it would look a little better in my opinion. > I expected this version to cut down on page size a bit, but it hasn't as > much as I had hoped. The dropdown box with the black border could extend upwards to include the menu title as the first list item. For consistency, the menu titles anyway have to be either all linked or all not linked - and all linked is probably the better direction to go. The dropdown menu lists should probably be left-aligned and positioned so that the text of the menu title doesn't move when it is hovered over. Dropdown menus have the drawback that you do no longer get an overview of the site structure at a glance. You have to browse through the menus to see what's there. > o Moved news and press to the bottom of the > main content. The main content could use a > change. Someone might argue that news and press are the reason why they access the first page and that they do not want to have to scroll down. Currently, they get "lost down there". Not sure what the best solution would be. In order for the site to scale well with different window width, we really could keep three columns. Otherwise the readability of the advocacy text suffers because it runs to wide. > o Made two separate color themes for the site. > More themes can be made styling the site in > pretty much any way imaginable. Now that I see it, I realize that a blue tone will not work for the headlines if we also use blue for the links. If we keep the links blue then nothing else should be blue. /czv From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Mar 4 18:59:32 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5EE4216A4CE for ; Fri, 4 Mar 2005 18:59:32 +0000 (GMT) Received: from av8-1-sn3.vrr.skanova.net (av8-1-sn3.vrr.skanova.net [81.228.9.183]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9552843D46 for ; Fri, 4 Mar 2005 18:59:29 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from joel@automatvapen.se) Received: by av8-1-sn3.vrr.skanova.net (Postfix, from userid 502) id 4A74538562; Fri, 4 Mar 2005 19:59:28 +0100 (CET) Received: from smtp3-1-sn3.vrr.skanova.net (smtp3-1-sn3.vrr.skanova.net [81.228.9.101]) by av8-1-sn3.vrr.skanova.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3CE6138557; Fri, 4 Mar 2005 19:59:28 +0100 (CET) Received: from t12o955p99.telia.com (t12o955p99.telia.com [213.66.34.219]) by smtp3-1-sn3.vrr.skanova.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1D0EE37E44; Fri, 4 Mar 2005 19:59:26 +0100 (CET) From: Joel Dahl To: "Devon H. Personally, I don't like dropdown menus, since they makes it harder to find the information you're looking for. This menu also seems to have a few slight problems in the latest version of firefox, for example this funny behavior: http://www.automatvapen.se/ss/badthingie.png > o Moved news and press to the bottom of the > main content.
