Unichrome support is under active development by several people, so xorg-server-snap may work better for you if you haven't tried it. I suppose a good example of a cheap PCI video card would be a 3dfx Voodoo3 or perhaps Voodoo5 PCI. Mach64s are also good, if you don't need the performance. -- Eric Anholt eta@lclark.edu http://people.freebsd.org/~anholt/ anholt@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jun 20 04:33:20 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3B7EB16A41C for ; Mon, 20 Jun 2005 04:33:20 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from v.velox@vvelox.net) Received: from S3.cableone.net (smtp3.cableone.net [24.116.0.229]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E605D43D1F for ; Mon, 20 Jun 2005 04:33:19 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from v.velox@vvelox.net) Received: from vixen42.local.lan (unverified [24.119.122.41]) by S3.cableone.net (CableOne SMTP Service S3) with ESMTP id 23468067 for multiple; Sun, 19 Jun 2005 21:43:40 -0700 Date: Sun, 19 Jun 2005 23:34:09 -0500 From: Vulpes Velox To: Everett Batey Message-ID: <20050619233409.41793acd@vixen42.local.lan> In-Reply-To: References: X-Mailer: Sylpheed-Claws 1.9.11 (GTK+ 2.6.8; i386-portbld-freebsd5.4) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-IP-stats: Incoming Last 0, First 33, in=53, out=0, spam=0 X-External-IP: 24.119.122.41 X-Abuse-Info: Send abuse complaints to abuse@cableone.net Cc: FreeBSD X11 Subject: Re: Really Vanilla PCI Video X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 20 Jun 2005 04:33:20 -0000 On Sun, 19 Jun 2005 10:44:13 -0700 Everett Batey wrote: > Giving up on MSI Mobo's integrated video .. > > WHAT is the most vanilla and cheap PCI video card that I can try to > get X11 to work right on FreeBSD 5.4 .. ? At first I probed hardware with # Xorg -configure but # Xorg -config /root/xorg.conf.new leads to the hanging of the machine and a blank screen: no Xorg.0.log in /var/log Then I tried 'xorgconfig', giving in the same options used with OpenBSD and Linux, which work very well. But the X server seems to be unable to go up and hangs the machine whenever the "savage" driver is used. So I changed "savage" with "vesa" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf With these settings X bootstraps but the only way to kill it avoiding a total freeze is: # pkill -9 X Exiting from any window manager doesn't work. With pkill -9 X, the display freezes and I can go back to the console with CTRL + ALT + F1 but here I find the screen somewhat corrupted. I'm able to interact with the system only typing commands that I can see and rebooting the machine! I also found that this kind of corruption disappears if the kernel is rebuilt with raster mode (options ...) and 800x600 resolution is used: # vidcontrol -g 100x37 VESA_800x600 Now, I wish I could use the savage driver and a cleaner way to exit from X without the brutal 'kill -9' Any suggestions ? -- http://swpat.ffii.org/ Giuseppe From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jun 21 03:07:37 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6D4FF16A41C for ; Tue, 21 Jun 2005 03:07:37 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from v.velox@vvelox.net) Received: from S3.cableone.net (smtp3.cableone.net [24.116.0.229]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3856B43D48 for ; Tue, 21 Jun 2005 03:07:37 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from v.velox@vvelox.net) Received: from vixen42.local.lan (unverified [24.119.122.41]) by S3.cableone.net (CableOne SMTP Service S3) with ESMTP id 23564860 for multiple; Mon, 20 Jun 2005 20:18:10 -0700 Date: Mon, 20 Jun 2005 22:08:40 -0500 From: Vulpes Velox To: Vulpes Velox Message-ID: <20050620220840.48047ebe@vixen42.local.lan> In-Reply-To: <20050619233409.41793acd@vixen42.local.lan> References: <20050619233409.41793acd@vixen42.local.lan> X-Mailer: Sylpheed-Claws 1.9.11 (GTK+ 2.6.8; i386-portbld-freebsd5.4) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-IP-stats: Incoming Last 0, First 34, in=55, out=0, spam=0 X-External-IP: 24.119.122.41 X-Abuse-Info: Send abuse complaints to abuse@cableone.net Cc: FreeBSD X11 Subject: Re: Really Vanilla PCI Video X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 21 Jun 2005 03:07:37 -0000 On Sun, 19 Jun 2005 23:34:09 -0500 Vulpes Velox wrote: > On Sun, 19 Jun 2005 10:44:13 -0700 > Everett Batey wrote: > > > Giving up on MSI Mobo's integrated video .. > > > > WHAT is the most vanilla and cheap PCI video card that I can try > > to get X11 to work right on FreeBSD 5.4 .. ? This log doesn't show X using nv driver. It however shows it is trying to load nvidia module twice, succeeding the first and failing the second time. After that, there is still line: (II) NVIDIA X Driver 1.0-7174 Tue Mar 22 06:54:34 PST 2005 which would come from 'nvidia' driver, so it seems to be loaded. This actually looks like a log from 'X -configure' run, which would indeed try to load all drivers and therefore also 'nv'. It would be more interesting to see log from running X server. How does configuration file (xorg.conf) look like? You need to copy this newly created xorg.conf.new file to one of places where Xorg will find it when started with 'startx'. The usual location is /etc/X11/xorg.conf or /etc/xorg.conf. See xorg.conf(5) manual page for list of possible locations. Not that I've heard of. Best would be to ask about this on XFree mailing list (XFree86@XFree86.Org). A log from server would be nice to have. If the one from lockup got overwritten by subsequent launch of X, you migt check /var/log/XFree86.0.log.old. Ati driver was quite a bit rewritten though in CVS, so it would be possible that such problem was solved by this. If you feel like experimenting I can make ports of last development snapshot. No, MergedFB is not available with XFree86 radeon ati driver. I don't think any changes were merged from Xorg. However, you should generally be able to grab a driver and replace it - ie you could take for example radeon_drv.o from another installation and replace the one in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers. I haven't really tried this lately though so I don't know if it still works.
