Since then I have received no feedback, neither positive nor negative. I would be happy to hear any feedback, bad or good. Please let me know if I posted to the wrong mailing-list or if my contribution is of no interest to the project. Thank you and best regards, Peer Schaefer -------- Original-Message -------- About: CDROM-Artwork (3) Date: Sun, 01 Oct 2006 00:47:10 +0200 From Peer Schaefer To freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org CC: www@FreeBSD.org Hello once more, some time ago (2006-09-01 and -02) I posted some CDROM-labels and CDROM-sleeves (envelopes) for FreeBSD. I received some kind comments and modified my drafts. Modifications include: * Now compliant with the logo-guidelines: the "FreeBSD" text/logo is now single-color white (not a white "Free" with a red "BSD" as in the first draft). * To bring back a "daemonic"-red ;-) the version number is now RED. * The background-colors are a little bit brighter now (the old colors looked great on a monitor but were overly dark on printouts). Here are some thumbnails (75 dpi): http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/thumbnails/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_generic.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/thumbnails/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_alpha_1of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/thumbnails/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_alpha_2of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/thumbnails/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_amd64_1of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/thumbnails/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_amd64_2of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/thumbnails/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_i386_1of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/thumbnails/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_i386_2of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/thumbnails/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_ia64_1of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/thumbnails/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_ia64_2of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/thumbnails/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_ppc_1of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/thumbnails/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_ppc_2of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/thumbnails/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_sparc64_1of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/thumbnails/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_sparc64_2of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/thumbnails/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_generic.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/thumbnails/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_alpha.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/thumbnails/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_amd64.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/thumbnails/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_i386.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/thumbnails/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_ia64.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/thumbnails/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_ppc.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/thumbnails/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_sparc64.png Here are the high-resolution images (300 dpi): http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/full/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_generic.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/full/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_alpha_1of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/full/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_alpha_2of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/full/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_amd64_1of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/full/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_amd64_2of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/full/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_i386_1of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/full/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_i386_2of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/full/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_ia64_1of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/full/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_ia64_2of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/full/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_ppc_1of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/full/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_ppc_2of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/full/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_sparc64_1of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/full/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_sparc64_2of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/full/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_generic.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/full/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_alpha.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/full/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_amd64.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/full/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_i386.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/full/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_ia64.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/full/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_ppc.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/full/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_sparc64.png Here is the SVG source: http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/freebsd-6.1-cdrom-artwork_svg-source.tar.gz LEGAL: The logo and the logo-font are (of course) by Anton Gural. The text is stolen from the FreeBSD-website. The remaining artwork is by me. I hereby donate my part of the artwork to the FreeBSD project, so you may use and distribute it under any license you may choose, e.g. under the BSD-license (you may even place it in the Public Domain). Unless the FreeBSD project chooses some other license, the FreeBSD license (http://www.freebsd.org/copyright/freebsd-license.html) applies. It would be nice if you give me some credit, but that's not legaly required. I would be pleased if these material could be placed at the website (e.g. http://www.freebsd.org/art.html). I would suggest putting a link to the artwork page in the downloads section, so that everyone who downloads an ISO-image can easily obtain the label and sleeve. Said this, I would be very happy to post new versions for each release. If there are no objections to the versions I posted, I will just adjust them. Do you think there would also be interest in a "box-design"? That would require a color-printer that can print on A3-paper (ISO 216 = 297 × 420mm) and that can swallow thick box-paper, so that's nothing for the average user. I also thought of "funny versions" for some events (e.g. a "christmas version" with a christmas-tree or father-christmas on it that can be available from the FreeBSD website in December). What do you think? I am relatively new to FreeBSD and don't know if there is a tradition of making funny things like release happenings on the website or such. Hmmm...? Best regards, Peer > I think they're great. I don't agree with you fully, since I didn't USE the trademarks; I only REFERRED to them. USING them would require a license; REFERRING to them is free (disturbingly, REFERRING to a trademark -- in contrast of USING it -- is called "fair use" in anglo-american law, which is pretty silly since it is no "use"). If you REFER to a trademark you may spell it differently (e.g. "Unix" in stead of "UNIX"), as long as you don't degrade or disparage it. Even using the funny symbols (R) and (TM) is not mandatory, as long as the context makes clear that you don't claim the trademark to be your own or to be free. But -- and now comes the important part -- we do use the (R) symbol for "FreeBSD" itself. Not using it for the other trademarks in this context might be misunderstood in claiming that they are free. THAT could bring us into heavy trouble, so I think it's a good idea to place a (R) resp. (TM) beneath the respecitve name. If we do THAT we should spell the trademarks correctly, because with (R) resp. (TM) we indicate that the actually used term is legally protected; and THIS is only right for the correctly spelled trademark. So, in the end, if nobody as another advice, I will modify the processor-architecture trademarks to the "correct" spelling and add a (R) resp. (TM). The aesthetic result doesn't make me happy, but Remko is right I fear. Best regards, Peer BTW: what about the FreeBSD website? Is there a specific "trademark policy"? (not about "FreeBSD"[TM] itself but about the cited trademarks?) > Hello Peer, > > You are doing a great job, so first of all a big thank you. > > I read/looked at the images and they are great, but ofcourse i am the > nagging user :) and wanted to say, please look at the trademarks etc > for AMD64 for example, i think it is written uppercase and it might use > a AMD64[tm] or something from the AMD company. If I am not wrong, Alpha, AMD64, IA-64 and PC-98x1 are no trademarks at all (somehow surprising, especially for AMD64). i386 and PowerPC are trademarks or at least claimed as such (somehow questionable for "i386" 'cause numbers alone can't be trademarked and the leading "i" doesn't make it a word). ARM, MIPS and UltraSPARC are registered trademarks. That leads me to this list: Alpha AMD64 ARM(R) i386[TM] IA-64 MIPS(R) PC-98x1 PowerPC[TM] UltraSPARC(R) Any vetos? But it seems that there is no consenus regarding these matters in the mailing-list (see Dag-Erlings posting below). Anyway, I removed the HTML and provide -- once more -- a long list of links (see below), which will probably also show up at Google, BTW, via the mailing-list-archive (so I don't see the point in the end). I also would like to emphasize that I will remove all content in a week or so. It was not my intention to "publish" any artwork that uses FreeBSD trademarks and Anton Gurals artwork without due permission. But there has to be a way to share drafts with the community before I petition the webmaster to upload it to the FreeBSD-website. Long story short: The artwork is still here (high-quality 300dpi PNGs, 75dpi thumbnail-PNGs, and SVG-source): http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/FreeBSD-6.1-CDROM-artwork.tar.bz2 (be duly warned: 17MB download) For a quick look here are some thumbnails: CDROM-Labels: http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_alpha_1of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_alpha_2of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_amd64_1of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_amd64_2of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_generic.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_i386_1of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_i386_2of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_ia64_1of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_ia64_2of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_ppc_1of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_ppc_2of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_sparc64_1of2.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/CDROM-Label_FreeBSD_sparc64_2of2.png CDROM-Sleeves: http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_alpha.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_amd64.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_generic.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_i386.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_ia64.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_ppc.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/CDROM-Sleeve_FreeBSD_sparc64.png DVD-Cases: http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/DVD-case_FreeBSD_alpha.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/DVD-case_FreeBSD_amd64.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/DVD-case_FreeBSD_generic.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/DVD-case_FreeBSD_i386.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/DVD-case_FreeBSD_ia64.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/DVD-case_FreeBSD_ppc.png http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/x7Z93k22W/DVD-case_FreeBSD_sparc.png Best regards, Peer > Peer Schaefer writes: > >> For a quick look here are some thumbnails: >> >> http://www.wolldingwacht.de/foss/freebsd/files_list.html >> >> (this URL is "secret"; no artwork is published by me at this time) >> > > This "secret" URL is now archived on hundreds of web sites and indexed > by Google... > > DES > From owner-freebsd-advocacy@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Oct 13 11:42:24 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 09EF216A47C for ; Fri, 13 Oct 2006 11:42:24 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from anderson@centtech.com) Received: from mh1.centtech.com (moat3.centtech.com [64.129.166.50]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 430A543D95 for ; Fri, 13 Oct 2006 11:42:14 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from anderson@centtech.com) Received: from [10.177.171.220] (neutrino.centtech.com [10.177.171.220]) by mh1.centtech.com (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id k9DBgDfq066648; Fri, 13 Oct 2006 06:42:13 -0500 (CDT) (envelope-from anderson@centtech.com) Message-ID: <452F7B97.6050100@centtech.com> Date: Fri, 13 Oct 2006 06:42:15 -0500 From: Eric Anderson User-Agent: Thunderbird 1.5.0.7 (X11/20060923) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Peer Schaefer References: <4528D502.8040504@hamburg.de> <20061008105109.GB60244@submonkey.net> <4528DC4D.2050201@hamburg.de> <4528DD95.2000808@FreeBSD.org> <452946B2.9030601@hamburg.de> <55360.194.74.82.3.1160488929.squirrel@webmail.evilcoder.org> <452BF79B.70400@hamburg.de> <452D2F3A.2080509@hamburg.de> <452F5083.4040904@hamburg.de> <86ejtcy3mp.fsf@dwp.des.no> <452F6178.4000407@hamburg.de> In-Reply-To: <452F6178.4000407@hamburg.de> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV 0.87.1/2028/Thu Oct 12 15:36:51 2006 on mh1.centtech.com X-Virus-Status: Clean Cc: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org Subject: Re: CDROM-Artwork (5-b) X-BeenThere: freebsd-advocacy@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Evangelism List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 13 Oct 2006 11:42:24 -0000 On 10/13/06 04:50, Peer Schaefer wrote: > This is not too easy... ;-) > > In the past I received some complaints about posting long lists of links > and was asked to provide a HTML (and thus keep my mailings short). Since they don't need a permission from themselves, there will be no problem ;-) But -- at the moment -- the "legal status" of my artwork-project is somehow questionable. It depends on whether you consider sending drafts to the mailing-list is a form of "publishing" or not. But I would see no use in asking the FreeBSD-foundation for formal approval of each different draft.
