I get instant hangs. Usually there is no CPU usage at all. If I try to attach gdb to a firefox-bin process, it barfs. One time I got a hang at startup with 100% CPU usage. It was possible to to a ktrace on it. But the ktrace.out is 50 MB, so I won't post it here. :-) I can mail it if anybody is interested. One thing that struck me when going over the tracedump was this: 23905 firefox-bin CALL kse_thr_interrupt(0,0x6,0x7fffffffd120) 23905 firefox-bin RET kse_thr_interrupt -1 errno 22 Invalid argument It happens on all the firefox-bin processes. It looks like is being called with a NULL pointer as its first argument. This looks fishy to me. If it is suspect, the trouble might be in the pthread library? BTW, the prototype for kse_thr_interrupt in the kse(2) manpage doesn't match /usr/include/sys/kse.h Roland --=20 R.F.Smith http://www.xs4all.nl/~rsmith/ [plain text _non-HTML_ PGP/GnuPG encrypted/signed email much appreciated] pgp: 1A2B 477F 9970 BA3C 2914 B7CE 1277 EFB0 C321 A725 (KeyID: C321A725) --HlL+5n6rz5pIUxbD Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.5 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFFTSeNEnfvsMMhpyURAh87AKCQ8gsfzYq+FI2NKyxwEAdkttBwkACgpkM1 S1qoTuGI6G8yHeiTTodqQJs= =X65O -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --HlL+5n6rz5pIUxbD-- From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Nov 5 00:35:31 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: amd64@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CC8AD16A407; Sun, 5 Nov 2006 00:35:31 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smarthost1.sentex.ca (smarthost1.sentex.ca [64.7.153.18]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 33D2643D5E; Sun, 5 Nov 2006 00:35:31 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from smtp2.sentex.ca (smtp2c.sentex.ca [64.7.153.30]) by smarthost1.sentex.ca (8.13.6/8.13.6) with ESMTP id kA50ZUKk058625; Sat, 4 Nov 2006 19:35:30 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from freebsd-current.sentex.ca (freebsd-current.sentex.ca [64.7.128.98]) by smtp2.sentex.ca (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id kA50ZUED011977; Sat, 4 Nov 2006 19:35:30 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: by freebsd-current.sentex.ca (Postfix, from userid 666) id EEAE973068; Sat, 4 Nov 2006 19:35:29 -0500 (EST) Sender: FreeBSD Tinderbox From: FreeBSD Tinderbox To: FreeBSD Tinderbox , , Precedence: bulk Message-Id: <20061105003529.EEAE973068@freebsd-current.sentex.ca> Date: Sat, 4 Nov 2006 19:35:29 -0500 (EST) X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV version 0.88.3, clamav-milter version 0.88.3 on clamscanner2 X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV version 0.88.1, clamav-milter version 0.88.1 on clamscanner1 X-Virus-Status: Clean Cc: Subject: [head tinderbox] failure on amd64/amd64 X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 05 Nov 2006 00:35:32 -0000 TB --- 2006-11-04 22:55:01 - tinderbox 2.3 running on freebsd-current.sentex.ca TB --- 2006-11-04 22:55:01 - starting HEAD tinderbox run for amd64/amd64 TB --- 2006-11-04 22:55:01 - cleaning the object tree TB --- 2006-11-04 22:55:45 - checking out the source tree TB --- 2006-11-04 22:55:45 - cd /tinderbox/HEAD/amd64/amd64 TB --- 2006-11-04 22:55:45 - /usr/bin/cvs -f -R -q -d/home/ncvs update -Pd -A src TB --- 2006-11-04 23:06:16 - building world (CFLAGS=-O2 -pipe) TB --- 2006-11-04 23:06:16 - cd /src TB --- 2006-11-04 23:06:16 - /usr/bin/make -B buildworld >>> World build started on Sat Nov 4 23:06:18 UTC 2006 >>> Rebuilding the temporary build tree >>> stage 1.1: legacy release compatibility shims >>> stage 1.2: bootstrap tools >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2.3: build tools >>> stage 3: cross tools >>> stage 4.1: building includes >>> stage 4.2: building libraries >>> stage 4.3: make dependencies >>> stage 4.4: building everything >>> stage 5.1: building 32 bit shim libraries >>> World build completed on Sun Nov 5 00:25:36 UTC 2006 TB --- 2006-11-05 00:25:36 - generating LINT kernel config TB --- 2006-11-05 00:25:36 - cd /src/sys/amd64/conf TB --- 2006-11-05 00:25:36 - /usr/bin/make -B LINT TB --- 2006-11-05 00:25:36 - building LINT kernel (COPTFLAGS=-O2 -pipe) TB --- 2006-11-05 00:25:36 - cd /src TB --- 2006-11-05 00:25:36 - /usr/bin/make buildkernel KERNCONF=LINT >>> Kernel build for LINT started on Sun Nov 5 00:25:36 UTC 2006 >>> stage 1: configuring the kernel >>> stage 2.1: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2.2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2.3: build tools >>> stage 3.1: making dependencies >>> stage 3.2: building everything [...] /src/sys/netinet/sctputil.c:207: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size /src/sys/netinet/sctputil.c: In function `sctp_log_nagle_event': /src/sys/netinet/sctputil.c:237: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size /src/sys/netinet/sctputil.c: In function `sctp_log_lock': /src/sys/netinet/sctputil.c:380: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size /src/sys/netinet/sctputil.c:381: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size /src/sys/netinet/sctputil.c: In function `sctp_wakeup_log': /src/sys/netinet/sctputil.c:498: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size *** Error code 1 Stop in /obj/amd64/src/sys/LINT. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src. *** Error code 1 Stop in /src. Mouse pointer begin to jump, keyboard input occurs with one or up to five seconds latency, moving windows is nearly impossible. This behaviour got worse since a undetermined cvsupdate within the last 4 weeks. On the same hardware this was never seen before on 6.1/amd64 or 6.1-STABLE/AMD64. A i386 box with the exact same OS and setup does not show this problem while building world with make -j2, although the i386 hardware is older and possibly less powerful. special kernel options: PREEMPTION SCHED_4BSD ADAPTIVE_GIANT Execpt SCHED_4BSD the setup and config of kernel has not changed. The problem gets even worse with SCHED_ULE enabled. As I wrote before, I could watch a kind of development into this worse situation without specifying what the reasons are. Because I did the same make -j2 many times before without problems, this drives me crazy. make without any parallelisation does hease the pain a bit, but still renders mouse, keyboard and graphics jumping ... I have been upgrading my athlon boxes to amd64 by just changing motherboard, cpu and memory. I have found, however, that many power supplies that work just fine in other environments fail miserably when powering an amd64 machine under both FreeBSD and Windoze. After talking with several tech support people from both tyan and dfi, i did some research. i found that most of the power supplies that i had been using did not meet the +12V requirements of the new cpu's i was trying to use. This wasn't something i could measure using a volt meter, or even the onboard health monitoring hardware. It appears to be some sort of transient "sag" in the +12V that is related to system loading. High performance video cards increase the load, and temperature seems to aggravate the problem as well. It was reccomended to me that the power supply should have more than one +12V regulator (or "rail"), and each one should be capable of supplying 20 amps or more. This specification is independent of the raw wattage value. One power supply i was trying to use was rated at 550 watts, and it worked fine everywhere i used it, but it only had a single +12V regulator and that was only capable of 15 amps. The amd64 rig would boot and install just fine, but when it was put under load (I was doing video editing, but its about as demanding on the system as a large compile), it would consistently lockup or simply reboot. After trying several swaps (memory, disc, graphics card), i replaced the power supply with one that had dual 25 amp +12V rails, and the system has run fine ever since. I'm not saying this will solve all your problems, but its a simple thing to check. Most power supplies have the amp ratings for each voltage on the label stuck to the side of the unit. If not, the manufacturer's website should have the information. If you can't find the information anywhere, you probably got a generic commodity power supply that most certainly is not up to spec and should be replaced. good luck, ron. Areca and AMCC 3Ware both make very nice hardware RAID controllers, and are both well-supported on/by FreeBSD. Both make PCI-X and PCIe models. We use the AMCC 3Ware Escalade 9550-series of controllers without issue on FreeBSD 6.0 and 6.1 (only the 4-port models) and on Debian Linux (2.6.16+ kernel, 12-port models) both 32-bit and 64-bit. The CLI and web management tools are very nice and usable. Supposedly the Areca cards are faster, but I've never used on so can't compare. We didn't know about Areca when we started searching for RAID controllers, and have standardised on 3Ware. -- Freddie Cash fcash@ocis.net From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 7 20:12:01 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 52E4816A415 for ; Tue, 7 Nov 2006 20:12:01 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mikej@rogers.com) Received: from smtp101.rog.mail.re2.yahoo.com (smtp101.rog.mail.re2.yahoo.com [206.190.36.79]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 0B0A743D62 for ; Tue, 7 Nov 2006 20:11:43 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from mikej@rogers.com) Received: (qmail 37637 invoked from network); 7 Nov 2006 20:11:43 -0000 DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=s1024; d=rogers.com; h=Received:Message-ID:Date:From:User-Agent:MIME-Version:To:CC:Subject:References:In-Reply-To:Content-Type:Content-Transfer-Encoding; b=6fGZ6WEPUJgyKojAvXlrMso6TknQQ0oeZ5bV4+yGMYp+SC4hxO8u/1mFD+SjGoE8bF5KfaqfCtEdpfX9A7yJNBSrmbXIRnDwkufaFgyf2XEvNSNLWHHhDd/zxj3JzCu0V/gKjk6dqlrIGDZv2sRN1pt5y4ICZbLYHDf4oruVLgY= ; Received: from unknown (HELO ?172.16.0.200?) We are a payment service provider and process online transactions for various merchants. One of the products we provide our customers is called XPay, which is a java client that is hosted on the merchants secure server that submits transactions by manipulating our payment gateways. The reason why I am contacting yourselves is that one of our merchants is setting up our XPay system, and are using Free BSD 6.1/amd64, they have informed us that only Java 1.5 is available on the 64bit port, and 1.4 won't compile. Our XPay client won't work with java 1.5 due to certain security constraints within this version of java that prevents it from working. Is there a patch available so that older versions of Java, such as 1.4 can be used on Free BSD 6.1/amd64? I have looked at your website and cannot see a direct link to a patch and was hoping you could assist us in our search to resolve this issue for our merchant. Thank you for your time, and if you have any questions or queries, please don't hesitate to contact me. I ended up bumping a NKPT following suggestion from jhb@, but these comments didn't look sane to me. : amd64/include/pmap.h-/* Initial number of kernel page tables */ : amd64/include/pmap.h:#ifndef NKPT : amd64/include/pmap.h:#define NKPT 240 /* Enough for 16G= B (2MB page tables) */ : amd64/include/pmap.h-#endif : -- : i386/include/pmap.h-/* Actual number of kernel page tables */ : i386/include/pmap.h:#ifndef NKPT : i386/include/pmap.h-#ifdef PAE : i386/include/pmap.h:#define NKPT 240 /* Enough for 16G= B (2MB page tables) */ : i386/include/pmap.h-#else : i386/include/pmap.h:#define NKPT 30 /* Enough for 4GB= (4MB page tables) */ : i386/include/pmap.h-#endif : i386/include/pmap.h-#endif On FreeBSD6/amd64, "struct vm_page" is 112 bytes, so to map 16GB of RAM we'd need to map a vm_page_array of size (16G/4K)*112=3D448M, and that requires 448M/2MB =3D 224 page tables. Add to that the kernelsize/2MB to map a kernel, plus some minor extra, and you get the required NKPT value. So the comment is mostly right for FreeBSD6/amd64. But on FreeBSD7/amd64 "struct vm_page" is already 120 bytes, and on FreeBSD7/i386 it's 72/76 for non-PAE/PAE, and 68/72 for FreeBSD6. The actual numbers are: : FreeBSD6/amd64 requires 224 PTs to map 16G of RAM : FreeBSD7/amd64 requires 240 PTs to map 16G of RAM : FreeBSD7/i386 non-PAE requires 18 PTs to map 4G of RAM : FreeBSD7/i386 PAE requires 152 PTs to map 16G of RAM : FreeBSD7/i386 non-PAE requires 17 PTs to map 4G of RAM : FreeBSD7/i386 PAE requires 144 PTs to map 16G of RAM As you can see, the comments in i386/include/pmap.h don't make much sense, neither none of four combination of FreeBSD6/7 and PAE/non-PAE. This is because (I think) it was blindly copied =66rom AMD64 incorrectly assuming "struct vm_page" has the same size. Also, for i386 it says "actual number of kernel page tables" where it should say "initial number of kernel page tables"; the actual number of page tables (nkpt) can later grow if necessary. The comments are also applicable to a normal-sized kernels only. E.g., mapping a 7M i386 non-PAE kernel only requires 2 PTs, but a 74M kernel already "eats" 19 PTs. (It requires less by using 4M pages when PSE is in use, but the rest is still wasted because vtopte() doesn't "know" about PSE.) So, these comments don't account for the possible larger kernel size, or assume a default kernel size. In the latter case, this should be documented. The i386/non-PAE is especially fragile.
