What do you think about my description? Would you > accept it, or should I trim it a bit? Or just pick the NetBSD's one > and commit? Hi Daniel and everyone else, In retrospect, having let this sink down for a few days, I think we should also bear in mind Ruslan Ermilov's comments about referring to the reader in second person. Is there any way we can keep the same meaning, stress the dangers of using ``-o async'' *and* avoid using ``you'' in the text? This is definitely far across the borders of nit-picking, but perhaps we can use something like this (based on the OpenBSD version, with the fixes suggested by Matthew May , and using the backup/newfs text suggested by Daniel): async All I/O to the file system should be done asynchronously. This is a dengerous flag to set, since it does not guarantee that the file system structure on the disk will remain consistent. For this reason, the `async' flag should not be used unless some application-specific data recovery mechanism is present, or recreation of the file system is not a problem. All I/O to the file system should be done asynchronously to ensuring maintaining the full integrity of the file system. The use of the 'async' flag by an application may cause unrecoverable data loose and corrupt the disk beyond recovery. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. r - repocopy The resolution of the problem report is dependent on a repocopy operation within the CVS repository which is awaiting completion. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. Unfortunately, there are quite a few points which are not so good here: + "to ensuring" ? + "ensuring maintaining" ? + What is "full integrity" and how does it compare to "non-full"? + The "async" flag is not used by an application, but it a property of a mount point + "data loss" is spelled differently + The disk is not corrupted by 'async'. The disk should still work fine after a newfs operation. The filesystem though, is another story. If you fix the above points, and *still* want to help, I would be honestly grateful to see the fixed version, as this part of the manpage has already caused far too many people to waste too much time, so we should just fix it and move on. Thank you for taking the time to write. Hi, I wonder if this isn't clearer... "It is important to remember that the machine running the X11 server program is called the X server. This machine has one or more displays, and various input devices such as, but not limited to, a mouse and keyboard. The X11 clients are programs which send messages to the X11 server requesting a service such as 'draw a rectangle of size X by Y pixels at position (col A, row B) on the screen'". If it is decided the section needs some reworking I'd be happy to prepare patches for any recommended changes. Back in 2003, I sent the following message to the ports@freebsd.org list: http://docs.freebsd.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=678160+0+archive/2003/freebsd-ports/20030727.freebsd-ports However, I was unaware that my message, including my e-mail address, would be publicly posted. I don't mind the message itself being posted, but since the e-mail address I used is one I use for personal e-mail, I definitely do not want it posted publicly, as this will facilitate spammers gathering it to send me junk e-mail. Is there any way for my message to be removed or for my e-mail address to be obscured? Thank you for any help you can provide. Sorry, no. The FreeBSD mailing lists are being archived on hundreds if not thousands of machines; even if you persuaded someone to change it in one place, this would have no impact on the other archives, much less on the archives of email addresses which spammers harvest. -- -Chuck From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Sep 5 19:53:24 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3335316A719 for ; Tue, 5 Sep 2006 19:53:24 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jcarchambeau@gmail.com) Received: from wx-out-0506.google.com (wx-out-0506.google.com [66.249.82.230]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AF15143DFE for ; Tue, 5 Sep 2006 19:52:16 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jcarchambeau@gmail.com) Received: by wx-out-0506.google.com with SMTP id i27so2371588wxd for ; Tue, 05 Sep 2006 12:52:16 -0700 (PDT) DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=beta; d=gmail.com; h=received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:cc:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition:references; b=IivddxB8BPRMec3AXbCT2hWgl7Kzsfd0Orp2vOFSipsrjz5jBnqBYKvMOmrRcUzeuMfnsESGLXMNtKEmovYr0Ky5VZ7uNiU21S3/CH5nLyz0nSCDKJap0mw8PvFxHeyma0oaf4GS/JFdsjQIDfJpQNDjcoBzU4wWw9VuDIKKQCE= Received: by 10.70.51.17 with SMTP id y17mr10469616wxy; Tue, 05 Sep 2006 12:52:11 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.70.128.16 with HTTP; Tue, 5 Sep 2006 12:52:11 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: Date: Tue, 5 Sep 2006 12:52:11 -0700 From: "John Archambeau" To: "Remko Lodder" In-Reply-To: <200609051159.k85BxO6H049544@freefall.freebsd.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline References: <200609051159.k85BxO6H049544@freefall.freebsd.org> Cc: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: docs/101114: icmptype names not in icmp(4) manpage X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 05 Sep 2006 19:53:24 -0000 I draw your attention to the following paragraph on the manpage for pf.conf (5); icmp-type _type_ code _code_ icmp6-type _type_ code _code_ This rule only applies to ICMP or ICMPv6 packets with the specified type and code. Text names for ICMP types and codes are listed in icmp(4) and icmp6(4). This parameter is only valid for rules that cover protocols ICMP or ICMP6. The protocol and the ICMP type indicator (icmp-type or icmp6-type) must match. To create a pf.conf file (see man pf.conf) properly for filtering of icmp, you must specify the icmptype(s) by abbreviation per the OpenBSD icmp(4) manpage you wish to filter. It's not like ipfw where you can specify the icmptype by number, it must be the type by the abbreviation as specified as by the OpenBSD manpage for icmptypes. Since the pf.conf manpage references the icmptype abbrevations used by both FreeBSD and OpenBSD, the icmp manpage should be the same for both with the icmptype abbreviations. Also if you do a pfctl -sr on a machine running pf instead of ipfw to look at your ruleset, your icmp rules are listed by the icmptype abbreviation in the OpenBSD icmp(4) manpage, not the number as ipfw does. Therefore since it's appears to be an integral requirement of pf, pfctl and pf.conf to reference icmp packets by their type abbreviation the FreeBSD icmp(4) manpage should be updated to reflect this. Here's the output of pfctl -sr with the icmp rules outlined from one of my firewall machines running FreeBSD 6.1; pass in log-all on fxp1 inet proto icmp all icmp-type echorep keep state pass in log-all on fxp1 inet proto icmp all icmp-type unreach keep state pass in log-all on fxp1 inet proto icmp all icmp-type squench keep state pass in log-all on fxp1 inet proto icmp all icmp-type timex keep state pass in log-all on fxp1 inet proto icmp all icmp-type paramprob keep state Note they are by icmptype abbreviation and NOT number code as ipfw has them. The man page is ambiguous. Right now the assumption is that the user wants to use NFS to provide "/boot". However TFTP can be used. I.e., for users who just want to load kernel+MFS Install image (i.e., install-only, no live system VIA NFS): As best I can tell, it has to do with the variables contained with the DHCP lease offer. I've often thought this might be easier if some of the great material available in the man pages was perhaps streamlined into the evolving FreeBSD Architecture Handbook. This is just my opinion of course and those of you with more experience than me may have good reasons for not doing so. Barring any objections from the community in general and the DOC project comitters in particular I would like to volunteer to start adding some material from the man pages into the FreeBSD Architecture Handbook. My first targets would be integrating the material on mutex(9), mtx_*(9), pthread_*(9), lock*(9), atomic_*(9), sched_4bsd(4), and sched_ule(4) into the material already present in the handbook. I would also like to try my hand at creating diagrams to illustrate the data structures used in our kernel code. Obviously as I learn more I will probably find more material which would be interesting to have integrated as well. Because of the time an ongoing project like this would take, would I be correct that doing this for the 7.X branch would be the most practical course of action and then MFCing where applicable and time allowing? I hope this raises some interest because I am sure that during the review process many misconceptions on my part about how things work would be brought to light and maybe help some additional future developers as well. I wrote a PXEBoot guide including jumpstart - work on it started almost two years ago because I found the current documents inaccurate or obsolete - seem to date back to 4.x or early 5.x. At the same time I noted that the diskless stuff is far from current, the document I wrote covers both setups since the pxebooting is the same, but I have not finished the diskless part. The problem with NFS/TFTP you mention have existed for years, I reported it in 2004: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=kern/74352 The workaround/solution is documented in the guide I wrote: a) Compile kernel w/o NFS support and load these as modules after boot b) Specify in loader.conf that the root device is mfs I cleaned up the guide I wrote and I posted here some months ago if anyone would take a look at it: http://www.daemonsecurity.com/pub/pxeboot/ Cheers, Erik -- Ph: +34.666334818 web: http://www.locolomo.org X.509 Certificate: http://www.locolomo.org/crt/8D03551FFCE04F0C.crt Key ID: 69:79:B8:2C:E3:8F:E7:BE:5D:C3:C3:B1:74:62:B8:3F:9F:1F:69:B9 From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Sep 6 09:22:26 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 749AD16A4DA; Wed, 6 Sep 2006 09:22:26 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from pav@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2FC6743D45; Wed, 6 Sep 2006 09:22:26 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from pav@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (pav@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k869MQkK067708; Wed, 6 Sep 2006 09:22:26 GMT (envelope-from pav@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from pav@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k869MQUA067704; Wed, 6 Sep 2006 09:22:26 GMT (envelope-from pav) Date: Wed, 6 Sep 2006 09:22:26 GMT From: Pav Lucistnik Message-Id: <200609060922.k869MQUA067704@freefall.freebsd.org> To: maho@FreeBSD.org, pav@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: docs/102925: Porters hand book: description for repocopy is bit odd X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 06 Sep 2006 09:22:26 -0000 Synopsis: Porters hand book: description for repocopy is bit odd State-Changed-From-To: open->closed State-Changed-By: pav State-Changed-When: Wed Sep 6 09:22:17 UTC 2006 State-Changed-Why: Committed, thanks. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=102925 From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Sep 6 12:46:02 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E2DA516A4DA for ; Wed, 6 Sep 2006 12:46:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jcarchambeau@gmail.com) Received: from wx-out-0506.google.com (wx-out-0506.google.com [66.249.82.225]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 253B843D53 for ; Wed, 6 Sep 2006 12:46:02 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jcarchambeau@gmail.com) Received: by wx-out-0506.google.com with SMTP id i27so2636901wxd for ; Wed, 06 Sep 2006 05:46:01 -0700 (PDT) DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=beta; d=gmail.com; h=received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:cc:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition:references; b=CNylftyHOTWiZtMYc9976r5kSGmxMyCxmI+Uyf0eCizsuDZSzEvXENLxU6T9TNrDL/VVCgIFERvMC18A4GRq2nUCiWa6HZ04LTUIS8Fag5Re0lVFcDTqmKlTbzQumW2KKqwGWE50fHJOfKleJR+qwENC6MZHtFbTzrTAnjIEf+w= Received: by 10.70.111.2 with SMTP id j2mr12004207wxc; Wed, 06 Sep 2006 05:46:01 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.70.128.16 with HTTP; Wed, 6 Sep 2006 05:46:01 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: Date: Wed, 6 Sep 2006 05:46:01 -0700 From: "John Archambeau" To: "Matthew Seaman" In-Reply-To: <44FE6068.5000801@infracaninophile.co.uk> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline References: <200609051159.k85BxO6H049544@freefall.freebsd.org> <44FE6068.5000801@infracaninophile.co.uk> Cc: Remko Lodder , freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: docs/101114: icmptype names not in icmp(4) manpage X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 06 Sep 2006 12:46:03 -0000 I must be one of the few people who rtfm's first. My problem is that even when you compile the pxeboot(8) binary w/o NFS support, it still tries to do NFS (depending on DHCP variables, it seems). The other problem is that the NFS code sets the destination UDP port of the NFS Mount request to port "0", which causes my PIX Firewall to, well, you know... ~BAS > b) Specify in loader.conf that the root device is mfs > > I cleaned up the guide I wrote and I posted here some months ago if > anyone would take a look at it: > > http://www.daemonsecurity.com/pub/pxeboot/ > > Cheers, Erik -- Brian A. If no feedback will be received, I will close this PR in a week. -- Best regards, Daniel mailto:danger@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Sep 9 09:25:19 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 63F9316A407; Sat, 9 Sep 2006 09:25:19 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from danger@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DB48243D49; Sat, 9 Sep 2006 09:25:18 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from danger@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (danger@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k899PI56075750; Sat, 9 Sep 2006 09:25:18 GMT (envelope-from danger@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from danger@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k899PI9O075746; Sat, 9 Sep 2006 09:25:18 GMT (envelope-from danger) Date: Sat, 9 Sep 2006 09:25:18 GMT From: Daniel Gerzo Message-Id: <200609090925.k899PI9O075746@freefall.freebsd.org> To: danger@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org, danger@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: docs/102334: Handbook and man pages for firewalls are inconsistent X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 09 Sep 2006 09:25:19 -0000 Synopsis: Handbook and man pages for firewalls are inconsistent Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-doc->danger Responsible-Changed-By: danger Responsible-Changed-When: Sat Sep 9 09:24:29 UTC 2006 Responsible-Changed-Why: Set me responsible. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=102334 From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Sep 9 22:34:27 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: doc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CB11116A407; Sat, 9 Sep 2006 22:34:27 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from danger@FreeBSD.org) Received: from virtual.micronet.sk (smtp.micronet.sk [84.16.32.237]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D016B43D5A; Sat, 9 Sep 2006 22:34:25 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from danger@FreeBSD.org) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by virtual.micronet.sk (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8F0E810E60E; Sun, 10 Sep 2006 00:34:05 +0200 (CEST) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at virtual.micronet.sk Received: from virtual.micronet.sk ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (virtual.micronet.sk [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id PIcwrVq+4v9Y; Sun, 10 Sep 2006 00:34:04 +0200 (CEST) Received: from danger.mcrn.sk (danger.mcrn.sk [84.16.37.254]) by virtual.micronet.sk (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5F44D10E5BF; Sun, 10 Sep 2006 00:34:04 +0200 (CEST) Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2006 00:33:56 +0200 From: Daniel Gerzo Organization: The FreeBSD Project X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Message-ID: <685966010.20060910003356@rulez.sk> To: bug-followup@FreeBSD.org, erwin.vandevelde@gmail.com MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: misc/103065: newaliases command of postfix overwritten X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Daniel Gerzo List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 09 Sep 2006 22:34:27 -0000 Hello bug-followup, >> Reinstall postfix. >> A better solution would be of course to ask the user during installation of the base system or not overwriting newaliases when postfix is installed. Requiring a full path specification of newaliases and putting it in different locations is also a possible solution. > The latter is what the ports system already does when installing > postfix. Unless you deliberately configured your system otherwise, > the postfix version of newaliases will go into /usr/local/bin/newaliases. Nobbut it's /usr/local/sbin/sendmail. Also users running postfix are supposed to add NO_SENDMAIL=yes to the /etc/make.conf file, I would say. Is there anyone else who think that this PR can be closed, as this "bug" is result of user's misconfiguration? -- Best regards, Daniel mailto:danger@FreeBSD.org
