I'd say that Eclipse GUI speed is similar on Suse and on Windows but observably slower on FreeBSD. Do you have any idea why it could be. It's hard to compare different versions of both the JDK (diablo vs. sun) and Eclipse (3.1.2 vs. 3.2) and call it an OS-related issue. That said, Eclipse doesn't seem to be well maintained on FreeBSD. It is kind of annoying that Eclipse decided to hard-wire the OS into the build system, and, of course, they pretended that *BSD didn't exist. At the moment this list is dead and Eclipse is not being supported on FreeBSD. I assume that everyone has other priorities right now, but I'm hopeful that it will get picked up again. Considering that even my OpenBSD system has a 3.2 port on it, it's hard for me to justify spending more time learning about this codebase to finish updating the port when I could simply move to any other platform for it. I am curious, though, as to what happened to the original porter(s) and why they aren't even responding on the list anymore. psa From owner-freebsd-eclipse@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Aug 16 07:02:48 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-eclipse@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-eclipse@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D23B816A4DA for ; Wed, 16 Aug 2006 07:02:48 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bofh@redwerk.com) Received: from office.redwerk.com (office.redwerk.com [85.90.206.104]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5FDDD43D46 for ; Wed, 16 Aug 2006 07:02:48 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from bofh@redwerk.com) Received: from bofh by office.redwerk.com with local (Exim 4.63 (FreeBSD)) (envelope-from ) id 1GDFQQ-0004jM-Sr for freebsd-eclipse@freebsd.org; Wed, 16 Aug 2006 10:02:50 +0300 Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2006 10:02:50 +0300 From: Eugeny N Dzhurinsky To: freebsd-eclipse@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20060816070250.GA17763@office.redwerk.com> References: <426b510c0608150218t294c212x92fc8e0c9db62d10@mail.gmail.com> <44E26B64.5080801@posom.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=koi8-r Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <44E26B64.5080801@posom.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.12-2006-07-14 Subject: Re: Eclipse GUI speed issue X-BeenThere: freebsd-eclipse@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: "FreeBSD users of eclipse EDI, tools, rich client apps & ports." All communication = for eclipse 3.2 has been taking place on the freebsd-java mailing list. = We should probably start using the freebsd-eclipse mailing list though. = As far as I can tell the original porter of eclipse 3.1.2 is currently = busy and welcomed someone else to use his port as a base to port eclipse = 3.2. I found on eclipse's site where he uploaded his patches to be = applied to the eclipse stream. I am not sure why they were not added = for the eclipse 3.2 release. When we are finished testing the eclipse = 3.2 port which is currently being worked on I will submit the patches to = eclipse and see if maybe it can be added to the next release of eclipse. = It looks like the CDT plugin for eclipse will need to be updated for = eclipse 3.2 and the EPIC plugin maintainer has mentioned that he will = update it when the 3.2 port has been tested a little longer. You can = find the current eclipse 3.2 port at = http://www.freshdevonrails.com/eclipse.shar and you can see the history = for it in the archives of the freebsd-java mailing list.
