It will be functioning as a server, and will need space for two ethernets (although preferably two ethernets and one wireless card, I can rig up a cheap access point instead), and two hard drives (although one can be external firewire or USB if necessary). It doesn't need a graphics card, although it wouldn't hurt, and here's the hard part: I would like it to be at least dual-core. I see http://www.tranquilpc-shop.co.uk/, and they are pretty impressive, but most of the processors are VIA and don't go up to two cores (unless I missed something). It's replacing my very aged 350 mhz server, which I've had for so long because it's so quiet. So does anyone have a favourite vender of silent/very quiet PCs? Check out VIA's hardware. Something like this: http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6852904909 1GHz dual-core CPU is nice. It is very expensive though, and has a fan, but I believe there is a less expensive model, and also a less powerful one with totally passive cooling. You could use small DC-DC converter and a 90W 'brick' PSU to power the beast without any fans. Hardware random number generator and cryptographic engine work with FreeBSD, AFAIK. But unfortunately not beefy for me :) It's quiet, but actually a downgrade in terms of CPU and RAM >> It's replacing my very aged 350 mhz server, which I've had for so >> long >> because it's so quiet. > You really need 2 cores then? Well, my 350 mhz machine *was* going to be replaced by a quad 700mhz machine that I picked up for cheap (for sale now, if anyone is interested), but my home office is now occupied by a long-term guest that isn't willing to deal with the quite loud sound that it produces. 4x700 is certainly way more than I need, but I couldn't pass it up at the price-point. On this 350 mhz machine, I've been meaning to run a specific application but the machine just hasn't been up to it. The problem is that it is quite CPU-intensive, and can remain that way for long periods of time, during which time I'd still like the machine to be usable. The easiest way to get around that is to compartmentalise the processor, which is easiest done with HyperTheading (which I'd like to avoid due to some bad performance experiences, and because it's only available on late Pentiums that require a lot of cooling) or with a dual-CPU or dual-core machine. I figure that nothing with two full CPUs is every going to be quiet because of the cooling required, but there are many dual-core CPUs built around notebook chipsets that can be quite quiet. My MacBook Pro, for instance, is dual-core and very quiet, and so is the Mac Mini (which I'd quickly buy if anyone has anything great to say about FreeBSD on it, especially if the automatic-booting problem is fixed and we can boot directly from EFI). > How about: > http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/06/21/the_next_generation_of_cool/ ? > (this isn't dualcore as well - but signifcant faster than 350mhz) That's a great motherboard and processor combo, but I don't know much about building cases and fans that reduce vibration and sound, so I was hoping for a ready-made solution like Tranquil-PC. I also looked at soundproof enclosures ( ), but I can't seem to find any in the 6-24U range for less than $800 Any other ideas? I think you might want to wait a month or two until Intel Core 2 "Conroe" and "Allendale" become more readily available. They're dual core, available for Desktop, and they're likely to be the cheapest (they already go for 193,00 USD in the US), quietest and most performing CPUs that are available on the market today. But after that the system freezes.... Sort of like the controller gets lost in it's own BIOS. 2Ware her in Europe/Germany is not very abble to help any further. The Asus board is already at it's newest Bios revision. I've actually picked the 3ware controller after talking to 3ware people at CeBIT. And good impressions on current@ and stable@. (If I run Xorg -configure then it creates the config file with the ati driver but it does not work.) Can you point me to a documentation that describes how to use VESA? I would like to know something about its speed, but it is better if I check it myself. :-) Best, Laszlo From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Aug 22 18:09:07 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: hardware@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3580D16A4E0 for ; Tue, 22 Aug 2006 18:09:07 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from alive@dienub.org) Received: from pfepb.post.tele.dk (pfepb.post.tele.dk [195.41.46.236]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D27D743D46 for ; Tue, 22 Aug 2006 18:09:06 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from alive@dienub.org) Received: from m00h.dienub.org (dienub.org [83.88.67.155]) by pfepb.post.tele.dk (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1F4AEA50044 for ; Tue, 22 Aug 2006 20:09:04 +0200 (CEST) Received: from [192.168.0.2] (unknown [192.168.0.2]) by m00h.dienub.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 687DC1CC0B for ; Tue, 22 Aug 2006 20:09:05 +0200 (CEST) Message-ID: <44EB4839.8050304@dienub.org> Date: Tue, 22 Aug 2006 20:08:57 +0200 From: "Daniel A." This causes my server to reboot occasionally, but never in a predictable pattern. A while back, the reboots only occured once every two weeks - But now they're almost every other hour. I cant take it anymore. So, do you know if the "watchdog timeout"s caused by bad network cards can cause a complete system crash/lockup/reboot? If yes, shouldn't a kernel core be dumped? And if no kernel is dumped, does it mean that the issue is potentially with my IDE controller or harddrive? I noticed that, at a point where I had no internet connection (And hence, my server was not used - but still turned on), the server stayed up for 20 days straight without any issues at all - So my #1 suspicion right now is my network cards. sis0 (onboard ethernet, 100mbit) and rl0 (PCI card) in my server right now are constantly having issues with their watchdog timeouts. Considering that I am quite poor - What PCI ethernet cards should I buy for my server? And could you suggest a cheap motherboard which isn't bad too? In advance, thanks a lot. As far as I'm concerned, Seagate makes some serious bang for the buck (In the case of hard drives, of course), and they are in the lower price range of drives over here in Denmark. I was wondering if there was any analogy in the world of network cards. But Intel Pro sounds like something I'd like to have. Hi. I'm not completely sure on this part. The only watchdog timeouts I've had was indeed a bad used network card, and it happened right away when I started to configure the box. I replaced it with a brand new one and it started working perfectly. I don't recall any crashes or reboots, but it did constantly flood the screen with watchdog timeouts and I couldn't do anything with the machine. Are there any other messages in /var/log/messages or dmesg that could be related, or on the console itself when the machine reboots? Maybe it is another problem causing the crashes that also causes problems with the networking. It does seem weird that the onboard and the PCI would be having the same problems though. Maybe this will help in debugging it if it is a kernel panic: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/developers-handbook/kerneldebug.html > Considering that I am quite poor - What PCI ethernet cards should I > buy for my server? And could you suggest a cheap motherboard which > isn't bad too? I like NICs from 3com, and Linksys' LNE100TX has been pretty stable over the years. Both are around $20 here in the US, but I'd go with the 3com for new purchases. As far as the motherboard, I'm not sure what type of CPU you have, but I've been buying MSI boards lately and they have been working out well. They're pretty well priced also. By the way, what version of FreeBSD? Perhaps if it's an older version and these problems have been happening since the beginning, it may be an incompatibility and already fixed in a newer version. However that wouldn't explain why it has gotten more frequent over time. -Mark -- Internet Radio: Party107 (Trance/Electronic) - http://www.party107.com Rock 101.9 The Edge (Rock) - http://www.rock1019.net IRC: MIXXnet IRC Network - irc.mixxnet.net (Nick: MIXX941) GnuPG Public Key: http://www.mkproductions.org/mk_pubkey.asc From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Aug 22 19:59:43 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: hardware@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 54ED716A4DE for ; Tue, 22 Aug 2006 19:59:43 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from alive@dienub.org) Received: from pfepc.post.tele.dk (pfepc.post.tele.dk [195.41.46.237]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 91BB243D58 for ; Tue, 22 Aug 2006 19:59:42 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from alive@dienub.org) Received: from m00h.dienub.org (dienub.org [83.88.67.155]) by pfepc.post.tele.dk (Postfix) with ESMTP id AF8478A0039; Tue, 22 Aug 2006 21:59:38 +0200 (CEST) Received: from [192.168.0.2] (unknown [192.168.0.2]) by m00h.dienub.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 50EE21CC0B; Tue, 22 Aug 2006 21:59:38 +0200 (CEST) Message-ID: <44EB6222.40706@dienub.org> Date: Tue, 22 Aug 2006 21:59:30 +0200 From: "Daniel A." Hi Mark, I really don't get any other messages, no. The only things remotely close to errors I get are the watchdog timeouts. Also, I've enabled all.log, and it does not seem as if there is any pattern to the crashes. FYI, this is an old Intel Pentium 4 server (2.4GHz). I've removed one faulty RAM block of 512MB, so I'm down at a measly 512MB instead of 1GB. I've tested it for 16 hours with memtest (Not 86) on a live system without any errors. I know that I should probably test it offline with memtest86 - But I just want the server to run :( Also, I'm getting a "Kernel Trap 12" or something - Which is the only thing I could read before the server rebooted, one day when I was lucky to have a CRT screen attached to the server AND while I was staring at it. And there are *never* any log traces or anything else, except when I execute "last", where it just says that my server rebooted at the given time. > > Maybe this will help in debugging it if it is a kernel panic: > > http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/developers-handbook/kerneldebug.html > >> Considering that I am quite poor - What PCI ethernet cards should I >> buy for my server? The DRAC card mostly works fine, and allows me access to the keyboard remotely during boot, but stops working after the kernel is loaded. A locally attached USB keyboard works fine (the server doesn't have a PS/2 connector at all). I've read the archives, and I don't think I'm alone in having issues with this, but I've not been able to find a solution so far. I can see that the DRAC keyboard is detected, and that kbdmux appears to be working, but nothing actually gets through from the DRAC keyboard. I've had a bit of a fiddle with things like the atkbd driver hints from the boot loader, but I'm not getting any joy. Anyone got one of these working, or got any suggestions for extra debugging I can do to help someone help me solve this? Here in Romania I could find them used (but working) for 3euros (100Mbps), and they did the job for years after that... Even if you pay 20euros for new ones, they're worth it. Tulip clones work pretty well in my opinion, and also Davicom chipsets (last ones I found for 6euros for 100Mbps, new in Germany, work very well). I have built a server myself now and went for the 3Com, am very happy with it (older model, 905 or smtg, seen by the xl driver, and though second hand works very well). I can also recomment Intel on the expensive side, and I've had good experiences with Realtek RTL8139B also, back when I was using smtg like that, never had any problems with them (8139C or the 10Mbps 8029 were horrible, though). RTL8139 is a cheap and not very realiable solution, but if you're lucky and find a good brand, they can do the job (I had some pretty bad ones from Genius, though, keep off of them). I'm not an expert in kernel trap and watchdog timeouts, but as it sounds to me I'd also check my hard drives or controller... had some nasty problems myself with those AND a faulty memory stick, but even after taking the faulty mem out, th hard drives kept getting me weird errors and eventually rebooting after some kernel trap (flew by quickly, seemed like "kernel trap 11 - that's bad!" though, so not 12). hope this helps a bit, ANdrei http://students.oamk.fi/~t6ruan00/ ------ Never argue with an idiot. The server is running and people using it as http, e-mail, fileserver and other roles and I don't like to shutdown it (otherwise I would just boot from CD or FDD on which I have the Win/DOS version of Everest/Aida of Astra software which suit my need well). Dunno about serials, but to get info on which hardware is installed, you'll probably need these: cat /var/run/dmesg.boot (generic info on devices and drivers attached) pciconf -lv (for pci devices) usbdevs -v (for usb devices) atacontrol list (for ata devices) There are some more specific utilities. Thanks a lot! I have managed to do what I need by mentioned utils. The most important is where to start :). Googling before you answer doesn't give an answer. Too many "lists" or so, related with "freebsd" and "hardware". So, it is more than enough, thank you. Ivan > * Ivan S. However I cant get both of them to work at the same time. I can load the sound card driver (kldload snd_emul10k1) only when the usb isnt in, and this then prevents the usb stick from working, in opposite for usb card first. Normally an interrupt storm occurs. I have seen fixes involving the disabling of usbd but I need this for my wireless "card". Are there any ways of fixing?
