I also noticed that running Webmin does it too (over ssl on port 9090 - as soon as I try to make a connection with a web browser the interface is hosed). I have a Dell 2950 that fails to boot if I have a SCSI card in either of the two PCIX riser card slots. I have tried with a i386 kernel and an amd64 kernel. With a SCSI card installed, the system sometimes boot under a i386 kernel but under a amd64 kernel, forget it. With no SCSI card installed the system boots and operates fine. The same is true (no trouble) if I take the SCSI card drivers out of the kernel. When the system fails to boot I must get cycle power to get the system back. Under the i386 kernel I sometimes got an error message about interrupts being disabled before the system locks up, but I didn't preserve those messages. I have had the system boot a few times under the i386 kernel and operate normally, but those cases were very few. I have tried booting with several different Adaptec cards and a LSI Logic Ultra320 SCSI card. I have enclosed the boot output of failed boots against an Adaptec card and the LSI Logic card. I have not clue why I'm having a problem because the same kernels and SCSI cards work in other systems, so I'm assuming there is something funky with this particular Dell hardware. I have three identical Dell systems and I have this same problem in two of them (the third is remote and doesn't need a SCSI card). BTW, Dell says "it sounds like a driver problem" -- sigh. I have fooled around with BIOS interrupts and other things without success. Hints and help is appreciated. Sorry, I should have made it more clear. I was running a stock SMP kernel *config* which was what you asked. I'd already patched the if_bce.c to the version you're pointing to there, and then later upgraded to the -STABLE with it included. It helped with a lot of other errors from the network card, but didn't solve this one. > Fortunately the other boxes are HP DL380 G5, which seem to work fine > with freebsd (until now :-)). At least one of the HP boxes seems to have exactly the same bce network card in from my read of the specs. Does that one use the same driver but work fine? Or have you not tried the same NFS test as we have? Thanks, Sam. -- "Fortified with Essential Bitterness and Sarcasm" Matt Groening, "Binky's Guide to Love". If you compile the ath stuff into kernel, you don't need to load the modules anymore with loader.conf. And have you compiled wlan support into kernel? If so, you could check with pciconf if you even have a supported chip in the card. It's normal to see some "cardbus" stuff when booting even if your card wasn't going to get any driver attached to it. I've been compiling only wlan into kernel and loaded the other modules by hand when needed, but that's just a matter of personal preference mostly. But atleast with ndis it's handy sometimes to just unload the ndis modules when the card goes nuts. More wireless USB sticks will be supported in not too long. Currently there is only "if_ural". See "man if_ural". --HPS From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Sep 30 04:18:18 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: hardware@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2E1BB16A412 for ; Sat, 30 Sep 2006 04:18:18 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jin@george.lbl.gov) Received: from smtp114.sbc.mail.mud.yahoo.com (smtp114.sbc.mail.mud.yahoo.com [68.142.198.213]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 5DDB643D46 for ; Sat, 30 Sep 2006 04:18:17 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jin@george.lbl.gov) Received: (qmail 92120 invoked from network); 30 Sep 2006 04:18:15 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO ?192.168.2.8?) I hope if someone can tell if this is a defective drive. The drive works fine with 2.5 - 6 feet USB cable but it had following error under FreeBSD 4.11: umass-sim:0:0:0:func_code 0x0901: Invalid target (target needed) umass-sim:0:0:0:func_code 0x0901: Invalid target (target needed) umass-sim:0:0:0:func_code 0x0901: Invalid target (target needed) umass-sim:0:0:0:func_code 0x0901: Invalid target (target needed) umass-sim:0:0:0:func_code 0x0901: Invalid target (target needed) da0 at umass-sim0 bus 0 target 1 lun 0 da0: Fixed Direct Access SCSI-0 device da0: 650KB/s transfers da0: 238475MB (488397168 512 byte sectors: 64H 32S/T 41867C) When it is used with FreeBSD 6.1, there is no error for short USB cable (2.5-3 feet). However, when used with a 6 feet USB cable, system cannot detect this drive. A couple of other USB drives have been used with these systems and same cables, they do not cause any error. So, what does "func_code 0x0901" mean? Is this a defective drive? TIA, -Jin
