I've been wanting to try a few of the more esoteric command line options (-XX:+UseBoundThreads and -XX:+UseThreadPriorities) in combination with libthr, to try to get a 1:1 thread mapping, but the jvm invariably crashes soon after startup. I may be barking up the wrong tree altogether, as Sun's docs say these two options are for Solaris only, but anyway... Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. -- Conrad J. All of the source jdk ports are based on the SCSL-licensed sources. Sun has a habit of releasing these sources once and not providing updates to them. So the original binaries from Sun (for all platforms) are based on these sources, but subsequent binary updates contain more code, available only to partners (like the FreeBSD Foundation now). The http://www.freebsd.org/java/ page doesn't help much since it is outdated nowadays. How much problems might I run into with the Diablo Caffe/JDK on 6-STABLE? When you build and install tomcat (from ports) with no JDK installed, the ports system should select for you the default (best suitable) JDK, which should be java/diablo-jdk15. The logs show that you are hitting the multiprocessor SIGBUS bug with diablo. The -XX:+UseMembar jvm argument is needed with diablo on multiprocessor systems to correct the problem. Especially now when the diablo-jdk is used for bootstrapping the jdk15 port. I tried to add the option to the /usr/local/bin/javavm script but did not succeed due to my lack of scripting skill. diablo-jdk does not work at all on my machine. Nearly every use of java (running programs, compiling etc) result in a SIGBUS if don't specify the option manually every time i run a java program (can't figure out how to do that with Eclipse though). A patch would be very appreciated. / Carl Johan Gustavsson From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Apr 25 22:15:06 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8200716A413 for ; Tue, 25 Apr 2006 22:15:06 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from herve.quiroz@esil.univ-mrs.fr) Received: from arabica.esil.univ-mrs.fr (arabica.esil.univ-mrs.fr [139.124.41.108]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 806EF43D45 for ; Tue, 25 Apr 2006 22:15:03 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from herve.quiroz@esil.univ-mrs.fr) Received: from arabica.esil.univ-mrs.fr (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by arabica.esil.univ-mrs.fr (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id k3PMEvHD066035; Wed, 26 Apr 2006 00:14:57 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from herve.quiroz@esil.univ-mrs.fr) Received: (from rv@localhost) by arabica.esil.univ-mrs.fr (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id k3PMEvKH066034; Wed, 26 Apr 2006 00:14:57 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from herve.quiroz@esil.univ-mrs.fr) X-Authentication-Warning: arabica.esil.univ-mrs.fr: rv set sender to herve.quiroz@esil.univ-mrs.fr using -f Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2006 00:14:57 +0200 From: Herve Quiroz To: Carl Johan Gustavsson Message-ID: <20060425221457.GA65991@arabica.esil.univ-mrs.fr> Mail-Followup-To: Carl Johan Gustavsson , freebsd-java@freebsd.org References: <20060425002717.X71843@office.paramon.ru> <20060425201925.GA22556@misty.eyesbeyond.com> <444E9C8D.2030504@bahnhofbredband.se> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <444E9C8D.2030504@bahnhofbredband.se> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i Cc: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Subject: Re: I was asked by diablo-jdk to post it here X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 25 Apr 2006 22:15:06 -0000 On Wed, Apr 26, 2006 at 12:02:53AM +0200, Carl Johan Gustavsson wrote: > >There is a known problem with MP machines. In the meantime, maybe we could add some statement regarding this issue in the pkg-message in java/diablo-jdk15... Here is what is happening: The jdk15 port is pulling in the linux-sun-jdk14 port as a dependency (to bootstrap itself) which is in turn pulling in linux_base-8 as a dependency (the current default linux_base). linux_base-8 will fail on amd64 as it tries to set ${ARCH}, which fails in a sub-make. The problem is described completely in this email message: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=41567+0+/usr/local/www/db/text/2006/freebsd-java/20060416.freebsd-java A viable workaround is to install linux_base-8 separately and then return to jdk15 install. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=87571 From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Apr 27 10:44:42 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D893E16A402 for ; Thu, 27 Apr 2006 10:44:42 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mv@thebeastie.org) Received: from p4.roq.com (ns1.ecoms.com [207.44.130.137]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8BEF043D45 for ; Thu, 27 Apr 2006 10:44:40 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from mv@thebeastie.org) Received: from p4.roq.com (localhost.roq.com [127.0.0.1]) by p4.roq.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 54BD04D20A; Thu, 27 Apr 2006 10:45:58 +0000 (GMT) Received: from [192.168.46.102] (ppp166-27.static.internode.on.net [150.101.166.27]) by p4.roq.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 77ADB4D208; Thu, 27 Apr 2006 10:45:57 +0000 (GMT) Message-ID: <4450A095.9010408@thebeastie.org> Date: Thu, 27 Apr 2006 20:44:37 +1000 From: Michael Vince User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; FreeBSD amd64; en-US; rv:1.7.12) Gecko/20060404 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: "Conrad J. When I realized that AMD64 1.5 Java being stable will be a fair while away I decided to install a i386 FreeBSD with a PAE kernel to make use of the 6gigs of ram. After bringing the server to a load close to 1,000 and the 1.5 Java with around 5,000 threads over a few day period I decided to believe that libthr isn't at fault and that it can just better reveal problems of programs over the other thread libraries.
