Here's the desired position attributes: - Must be experienced with source control systems (preferably CVS and Subversion) - Must be experienced with Makefiles (preferably pmake and FreeBSD) - 5+ years development experience in UNIX=20 - Must be comfortable with C - Must be comfortable with scripting languages (preferably Python) - Must be comfortable with UNIX systems administration. - Must be able to work through complicated problems, produce a detailed solution and schedule, and execute on that solution within the schedule. - Must be an excellent communicator. Some job description tidbits: In the short-term (next 30-60 days) this individual will need to come up to speed on our make and build systems (which are a series of Makefiles, UNIX shell scripts, and Python scripts), diagnose any issues which may arise, and ensure that our on-demand and nightly build system is able to continue to operate. This build system is currently functioning today, but is a complicated system that requires maintenance. While the build system is working properly, we have a few minor (but sophisticated) enhancements we'd like to see - such as a basic queuing mechanism for submitting builds. In the longer-term, we have some complicated and exciting projects - conversion to Subversion, build/Bugzilla/Subversion integration, BVT/QA regression suites, modifying the FreeBSD make system to have true dependencies, etc.=20 This position is available immediately in contract form, and also as full-time - in Seattle, WA. Initially this is a solo position but will grow to at least two heads early next year. Please feel free to contact me directly about this. Thanks. Nick Nicholas M. The job can be broken down into three main areas (with the main =A0 technologies we use highlighted): =2D System administration (FreeBSD) =2D Data management (PostgreSQL, Ruby) =2D Development of support tools (Ruby) System Administration =2D-------------------- We will be running our development and live servers for Rails apps =A0 exclusively on FreeBSD. =A0The ability to install, maintain, patch and =A0 upgrade these is critical to us. =A0We have implemented redundancy =A0 where possible, and are meticulous about security on the servers. =A0We =A0 are looking for someone to maintain these high standards. Data management =2D-------------- Our applications all rely on large amounts of external data that must =A0 be processed and managed. =A0Also, we generate data feeds for numerous =A0 clients and new ones are requested frequently. =A0A good understanding =A0 of SQL and relational databases will be essential in the long run. =A0=20 You will also have to administer our PostgreSQL servers. Development of support tools =2D--------------------------- There will be a strong programming aspect to the role. =A0We try to =A0 allow our developers to focus on the applications they are producing, =A0 and to do this we need someone to maintain and develop the tools we =A0 use. =A0The main aim of this is to facilitate: =A0 =A0- continuous integration =A0 =A0- test driven development =A0 =A0- automatic deployment =A0 =A0- a fully source-controlled process An understanding of object-oriented programming (ideally in Ruby) is =A0 essential. The job will be highly varied and call on a wide range of skills. =A0We =A0 are looking for applicants with knowledge of as much of the above as =A0 possible. =A0However, the job will be mentored, so if you are =A0 particularly strong in one area you will have the opportunity to pick =A0 up the rest. =A0The ability to learn quickly is very important. In summary, the skills we require, roughly in order or importance, are: =A0 - FreeBSD administration =A0 - Ruby programming - Managing data in relational databases =A0 - PostgreSQL administration =A0 - Apache administration Please send applications to roland.schaack@codeweavers.net and copy me in. I come from an ISP background, initially supporting customers while becoming steadily more involved with the back-end systems which became my primary focus. I have Apache, Sendmail, BIND, etc. experience, with IP/network/router skills as well. Alas, I have little to no knowledge of database systems, and what remains of my programming skills is little more than modest shell-scripting, though I can interpret and sometimes tweak existing code reasonably well. I am a quick and eager learner and willing to take on new challenges. I am available immediately, and I hope to hear from someone soon.
