I decided that I wanted to try the amd64 laptops with cardbus, express card and SD slot. And I wanted to buy it from the shops locally on saturday. This means I went with a big, and kinda bulky laptop from HP the dv5140us. It was a bunch cheaper than the lifebook I was looking at, and didn't have a two week lead time for the model that I wanted. Maybe I'll get one of them next year :-) Alas, FreeBSD doesn't perfectly support this laptop. I got lucky with X, since the ATI part that in here just worked. The wireless card and the sound card appear to not have drivers. Update on this - i have updated to 6.1 (built on Tue May 23 09:37:57 EST (AUS) 2006, downloaded shortly before). Until now, i had dri enabled in xorg.conf, but it would get disabled due to not being supported or something. Now it simply locks up the laptop (not panic, just hard lock, not even CapsOn light works). will investigate more later... My T43p with an M24 1T FireGL works pretty good now: I have glx working, but dri is disabled, since I have acpi_video loaded. With no other patches applied, I can now (since the dri updates from last week to -stable) resume with no problems, and the backlit is turned off during suspend (this has been the case for quite some time now. before that, I needed some acpi_video patches to achieve this). I have no dri/gl specific ports installed, but radeon.ko and drm.ko get loaded when I start X. thanks, Tobias From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Wed May 24 20:39:37 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EB8DF16A538 for ; Wed, 24 May 2006 20:39:37 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from roth@droopy.unibe.ch) Received: from mailhub03.unibe.ch (mailhub.unibe.ch [130.92.9.70]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1BBBE43D46 for ; Wed, 24 May 2006 20:39:37 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from roth@droopy.unibe.ch) Received: from localhost (scanhub01.unibe.ch [130.92.5.61]) by mailhub03.unibe.ch (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3B5C7420DD; Wed, 24 May 2006 22:39:36 +0200 (CEST) Received: from mailhub03.unibe.ch ([130.92.9.70]) by localhost (scanhub01.unibe.ch [130.92.5.61]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id 21771-01-71; Wed, 24 May 2006 22:39:35 +0200 (CEST) Received: from asterix.unibe.ch (asterix.unibe.ch [130.92.64.4]) by mailhub03.unibe.ch (Postfix) with ESMTP id AAD3742927; Wed, 24 May 2006 22:39:34 +0200 (CEST) Received: from droopy.unibe.ch (droopy [130.92.64.20]) by asterix.unibe.ch (8.12.10+Sun/8.12.10) with ESMTP id k4OKdXJu024334; Wed, 24 May 2006 22:39:33 +0200 (MEST) Received: (from roth@localhost) by droopy.unibe.ch (8.12.10+Sun/8.12.9/Submit) id k4OKdXsG013819; Wed, 24 May 2006 22:39:33 +0200 (MEST) Date: Wed, 24 May 2006 22:39:33 +0200 From: Tobias Roth To: Fabian Keil Message-ID: <20060524203933.GA13782@droopy.unibe.ch> References: <20060510121149.7ba4fc5a@localhost> <20060510052528.GA11015@droopy.unibe.ch> <20060510172547.19d29ac5@localhost> <20060510153801.5102a3a9@localhost> <20060524195310.GA13682@droopy.unibe.ch> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20060524195310.GA13682@droopy.unibe.ch> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4i X-message-flag: Warning! I tried agp_cvs.patch, which I think is the jhb@ patch you mentioned, but it didn't appy cleanly (no wonder, it's dated and huge). Is it possible to disable all ways to click on a touch pad (disabling the touch pad buttons included), without disabling the mouse stick buttons as well? I want to degrade the touch pad to a large virtual scrolling area without the click-by-accident feature, for everything else I have the mouse stick.=20 I know that I can disable synaptics support, that's not what I'm looking for. It is a HP OmniBook 5500CT, and it got a 20GB disk a while back, as the old 2.1GB (or was it 1.2GB? I don't remember anymore) was getting to small. It doesn't have a cdrom, and uses a pccard for networking, but works well. The machine has been running FreeBSD 4.x for a number of years, and the last test I did was to install 4.11-release on it. Now 4.11 is retired, and I'm trying to get 6.1 working on it. First problem: the pc card controller isn't detected (correctly) under FreeBSD 6.1-release (it wasn't with FreeBSD 5.4 either), this means I have no network to install from. The machine lacks any other "easy" ways to install from as well: usb / firewire ports? no. cdrom? no. built in network card? no. Ok, that leaves me with only one option: I take out the harddrive and install on another machine. BTW, I tried installing two slices; 6.1 on ad0s1, and 4.11 on ad0s2, but apparantly the bios in the machine doesn't support this large hard drives (20GB), because all i can see from the boot loader is ad0s1 (or disk1s1* as it is called there). Anyway, I now have a working 6.1-release installation, but no network. This makes debugging, updates, etc. kinda hard to do. So I am interested in getting the PC card controller working if possible. If you can dual boot Windows, this is easy. If not, it may be a bit hard, depending on the model of ThinkPad. If you still have Windows on the box, boot, log in, and Start->Run... Enter 'cmd' and click OK to bring up a DOS-like shell. In that shell, type 'PS2 ?' and find the item for TOUCHpad. I think the command is "PS2 TOUCH DISABLE". This is written to CMOS and will disable the touchpad for FreeBSD. IT will also make the TrackPoint a 3-button mouse. On newer version of ThinkPad, you can also get into BIOS at boot and do this, but older versions only allowed very minimal adjustments of the configuration in that way and PS2 is the only way to do this on those systems. While you are there, you might want to look at other options. I always disable suspend when the LCD is closed, enable the serial port and a couple of other things. If you don't still have Windows, you can go to the Lenovo web-site and download the DOS PS2 program. If you have a floppy, you can place this on a bootable floppy and go from there. -- R. It most certainly has a serial port...just no connector. However, if you have the Port Replicator or the Mini-dock for your system, it DOES have a connector and I use it. In the past, I have been quite accustomed to using ppp for Internet access, but I have never succeded in setting up ppp over serial for installing FreeBSD. I see that the PD6729 is listed in the pcic(4) man page, so I was hoping that there were just some tweaking needed. One thing I know (from running =A4.x on the machine) is that it needs irq 11 for the pc card controller to work. Receiving Interest From the Industry as It Enters Next Phase of Development Cantex Energy Corp. (CTXE - News) is pleased to report the following on its Big Canyon Prospect in West Texas. Recent company announcements related to the acquisition of over 48,000 acres of a world-class prospect has captured the attention of many oil & gas industry experts and corporations, who have recently inquired into various participation opportunities ranging from sharing science technology to support findings or expertise to drill, operate and manage wells. Trace Maurin, President of Cantex, commented, "Although we are a small independent oil & gas company, we have a very unique 0pp0rtunity in one of the last under-explored world-class potential gas plays with no geopolitical risks and the industry is starting to take notice. As we prepare to prove up the various structures within our prospect later this month, we are increasing our efforts to communicate on our progress to our shareholders and investors. Our intention is to provide investors with a better understanding of the full potential of this prospect as we embark on the next phase of operations." Starting immediately the company will undertake CEO interviews, radio spots (which will be recorded and published on the company website), publication placements, introductions to small cap institutional investors and funds all in an effort to optimize market awareness and keep our shareholder well informed. GET IN NOW Happy memorial day We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Thick as a brick. Red as a beet. There may be snow on the roof, but there's fire in the belly. Rare as walking on water. What's done is done. The season of goodwill. Wet behind the ears. A rose is a rose is a rose. Putting the cart before the horse. Speak softly and carry a big stick. She has a green thumb. Stand your ground. I have some ideas on what is going on, but no fix yet. For anyone who has time (no matter what size ram you have), I'd like you to try the attached patch. The patch is very simple - instead of interrupt storming, it tells you why the bfe card is unhappy, and downs the interface instead of continually attempting to restart it. The interrupt storm was a side-effect of the card complaining, and the driver continually trying to restart the card. So, apply the patch, then try with 128 as the values for BFE_TX_LIST_CNT and BFE_RX_LIST_CNT, see what happens, then try with 511 and see what happens. Then e-mail me the results. This will confirm that you are seeing the same errors from the card that I am. Oh, and once you're done with that, go back to using the values for BFE_TX_LIST_CNT and BFE_RX_LIST_CNT that work for you. :) Thanks, Mike "Silby" Silbersack --0-614941107-1148756799=:7405 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII; name=if_bfe.c.errordetect.patch Content-Transfer-Encoding: BASE64 Content-ID: <20060527140639.B7405@odysseus.silby.com> Content-Description: Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=if_bfe.c.errordetect.patch LS0tIGlmX2JmZS5jLmdvb2Rlbm91Z2gJU2F0IE1heSAyNyAwMDoyNToyNCAy MDA2DQorKysgaWZfYmZlLmMuaGFzYWxsZXJyb3JzZGV0ZWN0ZWQJU2F0IE1h eSAyNyAwMToxODozOSAyMDA2DQpAQCAtMTIxNSw2ICsxMjE1LDI4IEBADQog CX0NCiANCiAJaWYoaXN0YXQgJiBCRkVfSVNUQVRfRVJST1JTKSB7DQorDQor CQlpZiAoaXN0YXQgJiBCRkVfSVNUQVRfRFNDRSkgew0KKwkJCXByaW50Zigi aWZfYmZlIERlc2NyaXB0b3IgRXJyb3JcbiIpOw0KKwkJCWJmZV9zdG9wKHNj KTsNCisJCQlCRkVfVU5MT0NLKHNjKTsNCisJCQlyZXR1cm47DQorCQl9DQor DQorCQlpZiAoaXN0YXQgJiBCRkVfSVNUQVRfREFUQUUpIHsNCisJCQlwcmlu dGYoImlmX2JmZSBEYXRhIEVycm9yXG4iKTsNCisJCQliZmVfc3RvcChzYyk7 DQorCQkJQkZFX1VOTE9DSyhzYyk7DQorCQkJcmV0dXJuOw0KKwkJfQ0KKw0K KwkJaWYgKGlzdGF0ICYgQkZFX0lTVEFUX0RQRSkgew0KKwkJCXByaW50Zigi aWZfYmZlIERlc2NyaXB0b3IgUHJvdG9jb2wgRXJyb3JcbiIpOw0KKwkJCWJm ZV9zdG9wKHNjKTsNCisJCQlCRkVfVU5MT0NLKHNjKTsNCisJCQlyZXR1cm47 DQorCQl9DQorCQkNCiAJCWZsYWcgPSBDU1JfUkVBRF80KHNjLCBCRkVfRE1B VFhfU1RBVCk7DQogCQlpZihmbGFnICYgQkZFX1NUQVRfRU1BU0spDQogCQkJ aWZwLT5pZl9vZXJyb3JzKys7DQo= --0-614941107-1148756799=:7405--
