Shamil. mailto:suira@rambler.ru This is just a guess, but I think the console device may be switching to a different connection. This is the point where FreeBSD kernel takes over from the loader and, if the loader talks to one device and the kernel to another, it will seem to hang. If the console switched to a different device, this is exactly what you will see. Try connecting something to whichever device you are NOT using and see if it becomes active at this point. -- R. I was able to successfully get ndis0 to appear and after hitting the Fn+F2 button and starting ndis_events I could see some access points. The problem I'm having now is that when I do connect to an access point (with wpa_supplicant -D ndis -i ndis0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf) DHCP doesn't appear to work right. What I'm seeing is that the DHCP requests issued by the AP it self are ignored, however if I allow DHCP requests through the AP from say my cable modem, those are accepted and collected. This problem does not exist if I establish a link to the AP with my ural USB card. Also, a quick note on the Fn+F2 thing. Though the LED which indicates wireless card broadcast status does not turn on and stays off, It does seem to switch the mode from off to on. -cf Mark A-J. Sticking with the tried-and-true Thinkpad series, knowing full well that new hardware will cause issues with FreeBSD. Two big sticking points so far evaluating one (T60 1951-43U). I am trying FreeBSD 6.2 1. Sound: cannot get FreeBSD to recognize sound. First tried what I always used successfully in the past on T41's and T30's (and maybe T23's and T21's, I don't remember): # kldload snd_ich ....... nothing so I tried # kldload snd_driver to load them all, and still get nothing (other than a bunch of probes of parallel ports and serial irqs that yield nothing) 2. Wireless: thought I would need the if_ipw dirver, so I installed that port, and loaded it (like I did with success last year on the T41), but here's the bizarre thing: when I "kldload if_ipw", it registers my gigabit ethernet card, em0 !!!! WTF? Oddly enough, the real em0 doesn't even come up if there is no network cable plugged in. Shouldn't I at least see em0 but "no carrier". I've tried ath in case that's the chipset, but no luck there either. Also, for whatever it's worth to those reading these lists, I tried FreeBSD 5.4 first (even though I plan on going w/ 6.2 if I can get it working), and during the install, it couldn't even see the hard disk!!!!!! One other thing: Xorg works great w/ the Intel Graphics Accelerator card 950. Didn't have to screw with anything, looks great. The only weird thing is that everytime I start a new X session, there is a ghost flicker image of the last session. No big deal, but kind of weird. Don't even ask me about ACPI yet. But I'm sure I'll be banging my head into that once I can get through these Sound and Wireless issues. It has a new High Def sound card and there is no support in FreeBSD at this time. Check the archives for a patch that might get you going. I would guess the patch was posted early this month. > 2. There is currently no driver. ndis might work. The optional 11a/b/g wireless card IS an atheros, but you have to ask for it. (No price difference.) > Also, for whatever it's worth to those reading these lists, I tried > FreeBSD 5.4 first (even though I plan on going w/ 6.2 if I can get it > working), and during the install, it couldn't even see the hard disk!!!!!! I can think of few reasons to even try 5.4. With the exception of a few very hardware specific issues, 6.1 is vastly better. (6.2 would be tough as it won't exist for a few months.) > One other thing: Xorg works great w/ the Intel Graphics Accelerator card > 950. Didn't have to screw with anything, looks great. I suspect that the right sysctls can get that working, too. I did get it working for my T43. Good luck. -- R. Kevin Oberman, Network Engineer Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) Ernest O. I have recently bought a thinkpad R50e and, as I use a dial-up connection, I also bought a 3com Megahertz 56k pc-card modem (model 3CCM156 B), since the onboard modem is not supported by freebsd. The modem works fine, except the fact that after 5-10 minutes of being connected to the internet it just disconnects! On my desktop the same connection with the same telephone line works perfectly. I am running FreeBSD 6.1-STABLE on both computers. First thing to say is: FreeBSD-STABLE runs well and stable with SMP. And then again, there are some weird bugs/missing features the laptop has uncovered. 1) ACPI-weirdness? I can see some "acpi_bus_number: can't get _ADR" messages during startup. Whatever it is, it does not affect the standard ACPI functionality. There is also a "acpi_throttle1: failed to attach P_CNT". 2) cpufreq does not work The module does not load. It gives me "device_attach: est0/est1 attach returned 6" multiple times. 3) em(4) - small bug(s) When there is no ethernet cable attached, em(4) will fail to be detected. dmesg gives me: em0: The EEPROM Checksum Is Not Valid em0: Unable to initialize the hardware em(4) works if ethernet cable is plugged in first. Then you can unplug and plug it in again, it will still work. If you change the MAC address while it has been unplugged, em(4) will fail to work, too. 4) Sound (ICH7) The "82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio" chipset does not work. As far as I understand the docs, it should have an AC97 compatibility mode like 82801GB. This is really a pity that sound does not work. I tried to patch ich.c, but I'm too dumb, I think. The "bus_alloc_ressource_any" functions near ich.c:792 both return 0. Here is what I get from pciconf: class=0x040300 card=0x201017aa chip=0x27d88086 rev=0x02 hdr=0x00 5) No ATI - vesa works The kernel does not recognize ATI vga card. drm seems not to be supported. VESA mode Xorg works fine. pciconf: class=0x030000 card=0x200717aa chip=0x71c41002 rev=0x00 hdr=0x00 6) umass USB problems (panic on plug-in) I got a panic with umass. Pluging in a USB card reader gives me a slow kernel output. If I detach it while in the quite long detection phase it gives me: Fatal trap 12 (g_event) Stopped at xpt_schedule Debugger prompt is frozen from here on, so no further analysis can be done. Also, if I plug in the device and boot, the detection of disks, CDs and the reader itself takes minutes. The kernel hangs while doing something. I can provide more information on request. I don't know how easy it would be to order the other T60's w/ alternate 11a/b/g cards (Atheros chipset, which I am told should work), and would rather not rock the boat at this time. I've done a lot of research and have found that Damien Bergamini is still involved in developing the driver for the 3945ABG, although he is focusing his efforts on OpenBSD. On May 14th, he committed it into OpenBSD as the wpi(4) driver. I suspect that there will be enough of us here who will need support for these 3945 cards, so I'm feeling that even if these laptops show up up next month, and have to sit in boxes for several weeks (probably would anyway, we're so busy with other things), I might be ok as far as having driver support into FreeBSD by that time, even if it's a matter of patching or installing a firmware port (like for iwi and ipw). What do you all think? What are the chances of getting burnt? Sure we'll still have our old trusty Orinoco pcmcia cards if worse comes to worse, but I really don't want to have to do that again. That's what happened on the T30's when we went to 5.4 and the driver for the cisco aironet was broken. Since I'm on this subject, I'm still struggling with sound on the T60 -- some have pointed to patches for the Hi Def driver, but it seems that mine is even newer (g), and haven't had success here either. It seems like this is evolving rapidly though, and will probably get better as more folks pick up the newer Thinkpads and others w/ this audio card. Opinions? Other than those two things, I still think the T60 is a damn fine piece of hardware, and installing 6.1 was easy, X was the easiest ever (Intel graphics accelerator card, which I was nervous about at first, since we always had the widely used radeon cards before, but it xorg picked it up w/ no problems and handled the display superbly). Thanks again for any input. The T60 does had 2 slots; one for either the 3945 or 11abg wireless card and a second slot that will either be empty or have the Verizon Wireless WAN card (which I understand has no FreeBSD support, but I don't care). Did some more research today, and it seems like an ath card is the way to go, 3945 support or no; these are also discussed on formus.thinkpads.com (http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=25430), and another compelling argument is some benchmarking between the two. While not scientific or definitive, some anecdotal evidence that the atheros works better in a weak signal environment than the Intel cards, and also runs cooler than the Intel cards. Just thought I would share that; something to think about. The only additional bit that I have to offer is that it is no longer as easy to install mini-pci cards (or RAM for that matter) then it was on the earlier thinkpads. Before you could just flip the laptop over, remove a screw, and access the slot. Now you have to remove 5 screws from the belly, remove the battery, flip it over, carefully remove the palm rest w/ the touchpad just to install extra RAM, then additionally lift up the keyboard (which isn't that big a deal if you get the first step of removing the palm rest). It's not terribly difficult, but it isn't so easy to re-attach the palm rest when you're finished. I think I might have botched the cheap plastic tabs that hold the bezel in place, and now there some noticeable give at the seams. I have unlimited accidental repair warranty, so I might send it back to set things straight once things settle down. But when I buy the other Thinkpads, I think I am going to pay a few $ extra to have the reseller install the extra ram and swap the wireless cards. Oh, that's another thing -- if you customize your own Thinkpad on Lenovo's site, you can choose the atheros card as an alternate right there. But if you buy from a reseller, you get what you get, whatever model flavors they have. And they don't always have the tech staff to know what exact card is in there. If you know exact T60 model number you're looking at buying, I would check w/ IBM/Lenovo tech support to find out. I already blew away WinXP, so I had remove the bezel and keyboard just to verify that I did, in fact, have a 3945. Sorry for the long-winded post, but hopefully this will same some folks some time trying to figure this stuff out like I had to. > 3945 support is on my todo list unless someone else picks it up. Note that the screws that hold the thing together are plastic coated and the maintenance manual states that they should be replaced (along with the plastic tabs) an not re-used. They also claim that the keyboard and wrist pad are "customer removable" to comply with FCC regulations, so you can't be violating the warranty by doing this. I can't speak for everyone, but the driver for this card in windows XP seems to be garbage. It dissociates with the AP all the time, can't transfer large amounts of data without losing the connection etc. The only way to fix it is to do the "repair" option in the network properties. My atheros card was so much more reliable. If I had the option I'd take something else. > I've done a lot of research and have found that Damien Bergamini is still > involved in developing the driver for the 3945ABG, although he is focusing > his efforts on OpenBSD.
