I've some experience with Linux, so I'm not a total n00b, but I haven't really done much "in-depth" with any BSD. I would like to know what laptop vendors/models people recommend for installing BSD on, and what gaps (if any) exist in hardware support. To get things started I should mention that I was looking at buying one of either IBM/Lenovo, Fujitsu, or the British makes Mesh or Acorn - but I'm not opposed to other suggestions. The system should have, at minimum: 15.4" WXGA widescreen LCD 60GB HD AMD64 CPU At minimum I would like a system where suspend "works" in some fashion and where I can get online with wireless networking. I have a PC Card wireless modem which is known to work in Linux and I suspect it will work in *BSD, so if a given laptop's inbuilt wifi doesn't work it's not a disaster as long as the pc card slot is supported. Also, are there any specific issues regarding running BSD on laptops? I am currently using HP nx6310; after the initial problem with npx freezing when MULTIPROCESSOR is on, I an reasonably happy with it. The wireless (wpi) works (but not with wpa_supplicant for me), the Ethernet (bce) as well (I just have to disconnect the power supply for a moment when rebooting from XP). The only minor gripe is that I could not get the audio (azalia) work through the speakers, but it works fine through the headphones; also the SATA controller has to be set to compatibility mode for NetBSD, which is weird, as the native mode is supported by both OpenBSD-current and FreeBSD-current. I haven't yet tried seriously suspend/resume. The graphics - Intel 945 - works in VESA mode under XFree86, but I installed Xorg 6.9 from pkgsrc and this is now served by the I810 driver, so it's OK. Otherwise it looks quite well built; one may not like the 15" screen with 1024x768 native resolution. though (or, maybe, like - depends on one's eyes...). As far as OpenBSD-current is concerned, I just booted the installation CD and collected the dmesg (posted earlier in current-users@), but it looked OK at this stage. I tried at one stage FreeBSD6.2 Beta1, but did not get the wireless and the azalia working straight from the CD (I found an OSS audio driver, but did not want to deal with bits from outside of it; as I have another ath wireless card, which worked, I did not bother to look at the wpi one). On most Thinkpads (Lenovo or IBM - I have seen no real changes), BSD runs fine. I or friends have had good experiences with 760ED 600 600E T22 T30 T42 T43(p) X31 R51 I know have a T60, and it is basically ok under NetBSD current, with minor annoyances no ACPI suspend (NetBSD) (T60 has no apm support) ATI graphics not supported by X, so using vesa driver, which works intel gige chipset PHY a bit odd, but I think that's being fixed. Works fine at gige, ok at 10 Mb/s after forcing, lame at 100. of course the winmodem doesn't work disk controller "AHCI" not supported, set in BIOS to 'legacy' and it looks like PIIX and works fine. after exiting X or switching back to text console, it's in some large font that lets me see only the upper left corner of the screen. switching to external display audio works, but is a bit funny - azalia(4) support is still improving. Not sure if mic is ok, but someone just gave me hints. So dual CPUs, disk, DVD drive, atheros wireless, USB, all work fine. Order it with atheros ("IBM a/b/g") instead of Intel. While the above sounds negative, I'm glad I got it. I expect the X60 is similar. I have one at work and should try again - NetBSD current is a lot better on X60/T60 now than it was last spring when I last tried the X60. I don't know anything about the low-end non-thinkpad lenovo line. I would not conclude that they are as nice as thinkpads compat-wise, but I also don't have any particular reason to think they are trouble - just never tried and appears to be different lineage. Lenovo/Thinkpad service is still great. I bought 9 T43p systems and have had some fan failures (but these machines have a demanding work environment). The normal repair is still call, explain (day 1), have mailer arrive, send back (day 2), fixed (day 3), fixed unit arrive (day 4). After the answers i got here and some further investigation on my side, i ordered the T60. A few days ago, finaly, it was deliverd, so now i can show the first results :) First of all, i am not using the standard built in Intel wireless card, but an Atheros that can be ordered via IBM. The shop was kind enough to build it in for me, so no hassle at that part. I installed 6.2 (beta3) and CURRENT, both installed without a problem from CD. Everything seems to work except sound and the em interface. In CURRENT sound (snd_hda) works, so i think somebody needs to MFC that driver. (why was it removed from stable?) X works (perfect) at 1400x1050 with framebuffering. I did not look (yet) at an ATI drivers, since FB is all i need :) Pro: - Robust look and feel - Quality! - Nice keyboard - Keyboard light (i love it :) ) - Mousepointer between the keys (my former laptop was a toshiba) Con: - Fan speed. It hasn't dropped below 2500 rpm - Battery time (now running 30 minutes on battery and i have a remaining cappacity of 72%. I suspect the fan as a battery drainer. Loading acpi_ibm.ko enables a nice set of knobs that can be read or set with sysctl. So, my first impression, if the cons are fixed, this is a perfect laptop when running FreeBSD. If you're preferred OS is written by Microsoft it will probably work without any hassle, but i did not try that. -- Regards, Richard. So, my first impression, if the cons are fixed, > this is a perfect laptop when running FreeBSD. If you're preferred > OS is written by Microsoft it will probably work without any hassle, > but i did not try that. First, snd_hda had never been in STABLE. It is quite new and was added to CURRENT too late to be adequately tested before the freeze to prepare for 6.2-Release. I suspect it will be MFCed fairly soon as the the freeze on STABLE should be thawing (or might already be doing so). I believe that acpi_ibm should provide some fan control, but the fan is really not much of a power sink. Make sure that you install radeontool from ports. It will let you turn off the display (not just the back-light) and the DAC for the video out. Try setting hw.pci.do_power_nodriver="1" in /boot/loader.conf. That will help (or crash the system). It works on my T43. You can then up the value to "2" or "3". I have yet to try "2", but "3" prevents by T43 from booting. Maybe the T60 will do better. Larger values result in more aggressive PCI power control. Finally, limiting the CPU speed while on battery is a winner. If you use Gnome, use the CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor and kill powerd. You can then manually set the speed. Try to enable EST. Add hint.est.0.disabled="1" to /boot/loader. It is not a win for my system, but it should be. Even though I have these on my T43, Windoows still stretches battery quite a bit. I get about 3.5 hours on FreeBSD and about 5 on Windows. -- R.
