My needs are general: to play/record stereo audio (no need in additional channels), line output is a must, headphone output is a plus ;) What models can you recommend to buy and what - to avoid buying? snd_uaudio(4) only talks about "USB audio class devices" and doesn't mention specific models. In this case, I always carry a laptop with FreeBSD installed to shop and test all interested products in the shop. In the file "uaudio.c" the matching operation is only by "class" and "subclass": if (id == NULL || id->bInterfaceClass != UICLASS_AUDIO || id->bInterfaceSubClass != UISUBCLASS_AUDIOCONTROL || (usbd_get_quirks(uaa->device)->uq_flags & UQ_BAD_AUDIO)) return UMATCH_NONE; But just as reported on MP3 player and digital camera (umass) these days, NetBSD USB protocol stack has not been robust enough. Only attendant test can ensure what works with FreeBSD. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From Beijing, China Dmitry Pryanishnikov wrote: > > Hello! > > I'm going to buy an USB audio adapter supported by FreeBSD's snd_uaudio > driver. I have=20 http://www.defender.ru/products/elektronnye-ustroistva/adaptery-usb/10100= /=20 (http://www.usbgear.com/usb-audio-adapter-5/index.html for English = description) that is made by unknown company and sold under several brands (just = search for=20 "USB 5.1 AUDIO ADAPTER" or "AC1500 USB" in Google). Positive side:=20 It works (stereo playback/recording only, 5.1 sound does not).=20 Cheap (around $17 in Moscow).=20 Has LEDs that blink when data is sent over USB bus. Negative side:=20 You have to find correct recording volume, otherwise all you will get=20 is a cheap guitar overdrive - it seems that 100% rec gain is realy = 200-400% gain over=20 source level. If I set a mixer (Behringer MX) to -10db (level required = by most=20 consumer equipment) and line volume at 100% I'm getting distorted sound under any OS (both 7-CURRENT at home and XP at work). I will not recommend it to anything serious. It's just probing for the HDA controller and then tries to scan for some child devices. I haven't got the chance to put as much efforts into this lately as I would have liked to do but it's progressing. FWIW, I had had Skype running fine on 6.0-RELEASE -- then it stopped workin= g for some unknown reason. Symptoms were that the Skype process would star= t, fire up some child processes, but never bring up any windows. I upgraded to 6.1-RELEASE, did a portupgrade, and still had the same proble= m with Skype. After reading that other people still were able to run Skype= , I decided to start all over with it: deinstalled net/skype, deinstalled t= he emulators/linux_base-suse-9.3 that I'd been using, and 'rm -rf /compat/l= inux/*'. Then, I just: cd /usr/ports/net/skype make install (that ended up installing linux_base-8) Although the build/install went fine, Skype wouldn't start due to missing l= ibraries. So I copied them over from a Linux partition (happens to be Gent= oo): libGL.so.1 libXmu.so.6 libXrandr.so.2 libXcursor.so.1 libXft.so.2 libSM.so.6 libICE.so.6 libXext.so.6 libX11.so.6 libXxf86vm.so.1 libXt.so.6 libXrender.so.1 libexpat.so.0 And now Skype runs fine again for me. You should be aware that our USB stack doesn't allow full duplex =20 communication by default ATM. For uhci chipsets you can enable it by =20 changing the source and it should work. If this Plantronics headset is just an ordinary USB audio device, it =20 should work (FreeBSD 6.1 or -current is a good choice then). In case you want to play music at the same time you are using a =20 headset, you can activate the virtual channels for the audio device =20 with a sysctl. This way the sound system allows to open /dev/dsp =20 multiple times and mixes everything together and you don't need to =20 have more than one soundcard. One is for setting =20 it to a specific number of virtual channels, and one is to let the =20 sound system automatically add some upto the amount you allow with the =20 sysctl. It's in the sound-MIB (hw.sound?). Do a "sysctl -a | grep pcm". If the output is "hw.sound.pcm0.XXX" run =20 "sysctl hw.sound" so see a complete list of sysctl's available. Pick =20 one of the "vchan" ones and change it from zero to an arbitrary =20 numer... e.g. 4 to be able to let 4 applications play at the same time. I think we should activate vchans by default... anyone with an idea of =20 the number of channels we should provide by default (warning: bikeshed =20 ahead)? I already tried those, but my HDA device is sharing an interrupt with my nvidia device, and it is apparently causing panics with the 4front OSS driver. I haven't been able to get it to behave (I can't do much about the interrupts it is using through the BIOS unfortunately) other than disabling the nvidia driver but since I'd like to run X that isn't much of an option either =/ From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Thu May 18 17:47:35 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3229A16A466 for ; Thu, 18 May 2006 17:47:35 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from uspoerlein@gmail.com) Received: from nf-out-0910.google.com (nf-out-0910.google.com [64.233.182.188]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 55CA443D4C for ; Thu, 18 May 2006 17:47:34 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from uspoerlein@gmail.com) Received: by nf-out-0910.google.com with SMTP id x29so81724nfb for ; Thu, 18 May 2006 10:47:33 -0700 (PDT) DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=beta; d=gmail.com; h=received:date:from:to:cc:subject:message-id:mail-followup-to:references:mime-version:content-type:content-disposition:in-reply-to; b=V94aw4VuS1JsI75zc9h5/iHsvDxblWwvEcg52rrpWuYsVCCQANj53awLBsjjsLE5aRHA5G0XFF79n/WOYD3zFQ4xmmf+ixc9QZI2X7X2iEjNh6ka+DI1Lve9+2BHb/gBG19wGTEcdG55fTnreP2kO1YpWCd8WhCKzpAK3GP8y0Q= Received: by 10.48.206.12 with SMTP id d12mr766273nfg; Thu, 18 May 2006 10:47:32 -0700 (PDT) Received: from roadrunner.q.local ( [217.185.114.55]) by mx.gmail.com with ESMTP id b1sm1215300nfe.2006.05.18.10.47.29; Thu, 18 May 2006 10:47:32 -0700 (PDT) Received: from roadrunner.q.local (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by roadrunner.q.local (8.13.6/8.13.6) with ESMTP id k4IHlOFx001334; Thu, 18 May 2006 19:47:24 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from uspoerlein@gmail.com) Received: (from q@localhost) by roadrunner.q.local (8.13.6/8.13.6/Submit) id k4IHi6Rb001246; Thu, 18 May 2006 19:44:06 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from uspoerlein@gmail.com) Date: Thu, 18 May 2006 19:44:06 +0200 From: Ulrich Spoerlein To: Alexander Leidinger Message-ID: <20060518174406.GA1130@roadrunner.informatik.uni-wuerzburg.de> Mail-Followup-To: Alexander Leidinger , "Marc G. Well, the Soundblaster Live! (snd_emu10k1) provides four vchannels in hardware, ie., you don't need to set the sysctl manually. Thus, I'm using 4 vchans on this laptop with snd_ich(4) hardware since day one. No ill effect observed, and I think 4-8 would be an ideal range. Older version of this driver was available from ports (audio/emu10kx). Changes over emu10k1 driver: 1. Almost all Creative cards that based on EMU10K1 and CA010X-YYY DSPs are supported. Exceptions are cards on CA010X-DAT ("Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit", card known as "DELL OEM SB Live!" and "Audigy LS") and E-mu cards. 2. Complete mixer support. Some controls that can't fit into OSS mixer are available as sysctl under debug.emu10kxX. 3. Optional multichannel support. Front, rear, center, subwoofer and side card connectors are visible as a separate PCM devices. Only front channel supports recording, other are playback-only. There is no lowpass filter on subwoofer output. 4. Optional MIDI I/O support, one midi port on Live! cards and two on Audigy (and Audigy 2). MIDI support require "evennewermidi" kernel patch. Known problems: 1. When S/PDIF input is not connected it generates some noise. 2. Analog center & subwoofer are muted, because they share minijack connector with digital output. 3. On Audigy 4 Pro headphones connector on AudigyDrive does not work. 4. "AUX In 2" on AudigyDrive is noisy. "Features": 1. On EMU10K1 cards playback volume is low. What needs testing: 1. AMD64 was known to work for driver in ports. 2. SMP was known to work for older release (before driver appear in ports). 3. Audigy 4 (not Pro) card support 4. CardBus Audigy support 5. Digital output dmesg: (SB Live! card locks system before boot when inserted with Audigy 2 cards) emu10kx0: port 0xd400-0xd41f irq 9 at device 9.0 on pci0 emu10kx0: Audigy IR MIDI events enabled. emu10kx1: port 0xb800-0xb83f irq 12 at device 10.0 on pci0 emu10kx1: Audigy IR MIDI events enabled. emu10kx2: port 0xb000-0xb03f irq 10 at device 11.0 on pci0 pcm0: on emu10kx0 pcm0: pcm1: on emu10kx0 pcm2: on emu10kx0 pcm3: on emu10kx0 pcm4: on emu10kx1 pcm4: pcm5: on emu10kx1 pcm6: on emu10kx1 pcm7: on emu10kx1 pcm8: on emu10kx2 pcm8: pcm9: on emu10kx2 pcm10: on emu10kx2 pcm11: on emu10kx2 pcm12: on emu10kx2 emu10kx1: port 0xb800-0xb81f irq 10 at device 10.0 on pci0 emu10kx1: SB Live!
