As long as we don't lock our self into a position where we cannot switch to another search engine in the future if needed (and I don't see that happening here), I don't consider the closed search engine a big problem. When I talked to glebius about this some time ago we discussed simply hosting the search engine on a system at rambler and then only allowing rambler employees, and potentially other people who have signed an NDA, access to the system. I think that would be preferable to "The FreeBSD Project" having to handle access to the system to avoid any potential legal problems. I do have one thing which I don't like too much about using rambler by default and that is that rambler basically mirrors the mails so we have yet another place for mail references (we already both have docs.freebsd.org and lists.freebsd.org). I'm not sure if there are any solutions to this, but it would be nice to handle this somehow. That said, it's not a showstopper for me. > Currently, we are not aware of way to make Rambler to search in more > specific mailing lists, say freebsd-doc and freebsd-www; only in one > at the moment. One minor nit which should probably be handled is that rambler currently doesn't display the message ID - that should be there since that's the best persistent reference for a mail. > I have also asked, if it is possible to search FreeBSD.org web site > with Rambler. There are some issues which should be worked out, and you mention the ones I can recall in your mail, other than that it sounds a feasible way ahead. Of cause, it requires someone to take the lead on this... hint hint :-). BTW. you might want to poke wosch directly to hear if he has any comments, since he is the one handling the current search system. Also note, that you should read the lack of other responses as "No objections" :-). -- Simon L. We are getting close to the application deadline and are afraid some developers are going to miss getting help with their travel expenses to EuroBSDCon. Thanks, Deb Goodkin The FreeBSD Foundation -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [FreeBSD-Announce] Travel Grant Application due Oct 6 Date: Thu, 28 Sep 2006 10:14:32 -0600 From: Deb Goodkin To: freebsd-announce@freebsd.org This message is a reminder to the FreeBSD community, from The FreeBSD Foundation, that the Travel Grant Request applications for EuroBSDCon are due by October 6, 2006. If you have submitted an application and have not received a confirmation that the foundation received your application, then please resubmit your application. The FreeBSD Foundation will be providing a limited number of travel grants to individuals requesting assistance. Please fill out and submit the Travel Grant Request Form at www.freebsdfoundation.org/documents/ by October 6, to apply for this grant. Though we would like to support everyone who applies, priority will be given to FreeBSD developers speaking at the conference. Due to constrained resources, we would appreciate if developers could look to their employers first for sponsorship or cost-splitting. Also, to be considered for the grant, you must provide a detailed justification for attending this conference in the application. Please describe, not only your purpose for attending, but how the FreeBSD community will benefit by you attending this conference. Please note, the deadline for submitting Travel Grant Request forms is October 6, 2006. Thank You, The FreeBSD Foundation _______________________________________________ freebsd-announce@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-announce To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-announce-unsubscribe@freebsd.org" From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Oct 4 00:57:02 2006 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1A4C016A403 for ; Wed, 4 Oct 2006 00:57:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from andriy.tyurnikov@gmail.com) Received: from ug-out-1314.google.com (ug-out-1314.google.com [66.249.92.174]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6D64443D49 for ; Wed, 4 Oct 2006 00:56:59 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from andriy.tyurnikov@gmail.com) Received: by ug-out-1314.google.com with SMTP id u40so920ugc for ; Tue, 03 Oct 2006 17:56:59 -0700 (PDT) DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=beta; d=gmail.com; h=received:message-id:date:user-agent:mime-version:to:subject:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:from; b=ipQ7sg2CtcvgVUP2Z3jWMo+iz1stfg9equdOm/kIr77xXHbwKFcWVDof2sJee25gdFePHECE+OfxrRF5lR0k8UVpCsZ0IwssbTynCIUb7XllOb3G7OJKPtFzsYxwKO6jD/xhj+A7ut1UYarQasnouSMoSOK3gWkRl78mUlKeH9o= Received: by 10.67.103.7 with SMTP id f7mr2663ugm; Tue, 03 Oct 2006 17:56:59 -0700 (PDT) Received: from ?172.17.17.2?
