The problem is observed both with the GENERIC and SMP kernel configurations. >Description: The system freezes almost immediately when copying a file to a usb disk slice that is formatted with Linux' ext2 filesystem. "Freeze" means that the system stops responding to any keyboard or mouse input, the mouse pointer no longer moves. After the necessary hard reboot the target file exists but is empty. The resulting damage to the ext2fs filesystem is usually limited. The problem has been persistent since Kernel release 6.1. /usr/src was refreshed from stable on May 12th, 2007. The problem is independent from the method of connecting the disk to the system (hotplug or at boot time). The hardware works flawlessly under a different OS (Linux). The file that is copied to the disk is 2097152000 bytes (~2GB) large. It is unknown if the file size has an impact; the target disk is my backup drive, so I am reluctant to experiment with it. Similarly, it is unknown if the problem is related to the fact that the disk is formatted with ext2. /etc/make.conf parameters: CFLAGS+=-pipe -O2 -march=k8 Suspected cause of the problem: Deadlock within the kernel; potentially due to a race condition. >How-To-Repeat: Connect a usb disk to the system with an ext2fs filesystem in the first slice. Mount the disk with something like mount -f ext2fs /dev/da0s1 /mnt. Copy a file to the disk using, e.g. cp source-file /mnt >Fix: None known --- dmesg.log begins here --- Copyright (c) 1992-2007 The FreeBSD Project. There are some ACPI AE_NOT_FOUND errors (ACPI-0438: *** Error: Looking up [LNKC] in namespace, AE_NOT_FOUND) but other than this everything else seems to be detected without trouble. On board Ethernet works as does the integrated video. Sound not tested. Please update the http://www.freebsd.org/platforms/amd64/motherboards.html page to include this board as it would appear to be a reasonable low cost option and no AMD690 chipsets are on the list yet. It does not depend on multiple CPUs or USB. Single AMD64 CPU, SATA drive connected to nforce4 ultra. USB disk with FFS works fine, even with large (tens-of-GB) files. I have only seen this with ext2fs. It may well be a problem with large filesizes, perhaps a 31 or 32 bit limit. Small files (a few KB) work okay. Mounting the ext2fs read-only works fine, even with multi-GB files. I think my case was removing a large file from the ext2fs. This was with FreeBSD-6.0. I haven't seen it with 6.2, but that's because I've avoided rm-ing large files on ext2fs. The ext2fs was created under Linux, as were the large files. Rm-ing the large files works fine under Linux. I found some old PRs that describe this behaviour: amd64/87305, amd64/87689. The age of these PRs make me think this issue is not going to be solved in the near future. :) Is there a workaround for this or another way of saving energy? The system I use is a Tyan S2875 board with 2 Opteron 250. thank you, Uwe From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Fri May 18 19:15:51 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9718016A402 for ; Fri, 18 May 2007 19:15:51 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from groot@kde.org) Received: from poster.science.ru.nl (poster.science.ru.nl [131.174.30.28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2C59413C465 for ; Fri, 18 May 2007 19:15:50 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from groot@kde.org) Received: from smeltpunt.science.ru.nl [131.174.16.145] (helo=smeltpunt.science.ru.nl) by poster.science.ru.nl (8.13.7/5.11) with ESMTP id l4IJ3Sxm022816 for ; Fri, 18 May 2007 21:03:28 +0200 (MEST) Received: from adsl-dc-2f63f.adsl.wanadoo.nl [83.116.148.63] (helo=research.englishbreakfastnetwork.org) (authen=adridg) by smeltpunt.science.ru.nl (8.13.7/5.11) with ESMTP id l4IJ3QAS012929; Fri, 18 May 2007 21:03:26 +0200 (MEST) From: Adriaan de Groot To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Date: Fri, 18 May 2007 21:04:18 +0200 User-Agent: KMail/1.9.6 References: <20070518183549.GA3524@laverenz.de> In-Reply-To: <20070518183549.GA3524@laverenz.de> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; boundary="nextPart6325121.imQ7fKFPGB"; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; micalg=pgp-sha1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-Id: <200705182104.24007.groot@kde.org> Cc: Subject: Re: cpufreq/powerd workaround?
