I suffer random reboots without any clear reason. A possible power failure it's a discarded point: I use a switched rack PDU and anything is showed by the logs. Moreover, I'm talking about datacenter environment, so there're a lot of redundant UPSs too. So, I tend to think it should be a hard/soft conflict, but when I check the dmseg and others logs after a random reboot, all appears completely normal. I know that a kernel dump will be great help, but this boxes has a 4/8GB of RAM, and their /swap is lesser. Moreover, I have a lot of services in the boxes: http/https (Apache), SMTP (Postfix), POP/IMAP (Dovecot) and database (MySQL). This point makes too complex to determines what is the origin of the random reboots. I have to say that the strange reboots seems that hasn't direct relation with the system load: they occurs randomly in stress or calm situations. I've looked at ACPI issues, but, accordint to this helpful info [2], all seems ok. їSome idea? What Version of FreeBSD are you running on this systems? I once had a very busy file server which was running FreeBSD 6.0 and showed similar effects, eg. random crashes every 2 - 3 weeks. After some months I discovered that it happens when one of the backups was running. Other less busy servers run just fine with FreeBSD 6.0. After upgrading to FreeBSD 6.1 everthing was running stable again. bye Fabian From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Dec 17 19:27:28 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F05DB16A41A for ; Mon, 17 Dec 2007 19:27:28 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jordi.espasa@opengea.org) Received: from mail.opengea.org (234.pool85-48-253.static.orange.es [85.48.253.234]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8E5CA13C474 for ; Mon, 17 Dec 2007 19:27:28 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jordi.espasa@opengea.org) Received: from localhost (tartarus [127.0.0.1]) by mail.opengea.org (Opengea.org Project MailServer) with ESMTP id 63525D50038 for ; Mon, 17 Dec 2007 20:27:06 +0100 (CET) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at opengea.org Received: from mail.opengea.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (mail.opengea.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10026) with ESMTP id EeeTRKGIgmjA for ; Mon, 17 Dec 2007 20:27:06 +0100 (CET) Received: from [192.168.1.33] (179.Red-88-25-70.staticIP.rima-tde.net [88.25.70.179]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) (Authenticated sender: jordi.espasa@opengea.org) by mail.opengea.org (Opengea.org Project MailServer) with ESMTP id ECB0AD50036 for ; Mon, 17 Dec 2007 20:27:05 +0100 (CET) Message-ID: <4766CDAB.5010709@opengea.org> Date: Mon, 17 Dec 2007 20:27:39 +0100 From: Jordi Espasa Clofent User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 (X11/20071022) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org References: <47656FB7.4070807@opengea.org> <4766C95F.4000506@wenks.ch> In-Reply-To: <4766C95F.4000506@wenks.ch> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: Re: Random reboots X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 17 Dec 2007 19:27:29 -0000 > What Version of FreeBSD are you running on this systems? 6.2p[5-8] > I once had a very busy file server which was running FreeBSD 6.0 and > showed similar effects, eg. random crashes every 2 - 3 weeks. It's not my case. Currently I focused in the fact that the chipset driver is nfe(4) which will be included in closer 7 branch, but I use nowadays. Especially I'm working in the relation between the NICs (controlled by em driver) and the IRQs. Moreover I'm also planning to recompile the kernel with kgdb support and get a coredump for accurate analysis. -- Thanks, Jordi Espasa Clofent From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Dec 17 19:34:35 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 63FC416A41B for ; Mon, 17 Dec 2007 19:34:35 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jordi.espasa@opengea.org) Received: from mail.opengea.org (234.pool85-48-253.static.orange.es [85.48.253.234]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 157D413C45A for ; Mon, 17 Dec 2007 19:34:35 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jordi.espasa@opengea.org) Received: from localhost (tartarus [127.0.0.1]) by mail.opengea.org (Opengea.org Project MailServer) with ESMTP id 4CB8BD50038 for ; Mon, 17 Dec 2007 20:34:13 +0100 (CET) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at opengea.org Received: from mail.opengea.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (mail.opengea.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10026) with ESMTP id xFGopiwPt7Wa for ; Mon, 17 Dec 2007 20:34:13 +0100 (CET) Received: from [192.168.1.33] (179.Red-88-25-70.staticIP.rima-tde.net [88.25.70.179]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) (Authenticated sender: jordi.espasa@opengea.org) by mail.opengea.org (Opengea.org Project MailServer) with ESMTP id DC354D50036 for ; Mon, 17 Dec 2007 20:34:12 +0100 (CET) Message-ID: <4766CF56.7030308@opengea.org> Date: Mon, 17 Dec 2007 20:34:46 +0100 From: Jordi Espasa Clofent User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 (X11/20071022) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org References: <47656FB7.4070807@opengea.org> In-Reply-To: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: Re: Random reboots X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 17 Dec 2007 19:34:35 -0000 > That would be especially helpful, since from this information we don't > know whether the cause is a kernel panic or a hardware problem. Not trying to hound you :) > Besides of that, I was looking at watchdog but I don't understand their > operation yet. It's a time question. The reason I ask is that I've run into a couple of issues where the machine hangs. If you were using a watchdog, that would cause the system to reboot. So as far as debugging goes, it's just as well that you aren't using it. I have run into some issues with snapshots, are you using them? You might also check the SMART data on your disks since FreeBSD has some bugs where failing drives are not handled gracefully. See the smartmontools port. One other idea: you might configure a serial console so you can see any messages the machine generates as it's dying. (These wouldn't necessarily appear in the log files, since the system is too dead to write to them.) You could connect the serial port to another machine which logs it. -- Nate Eldredge nge@cs.hmc.edu From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Dec 18 08:15:35 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6428A16A417 for ; Tue, 18 Dec 2007 08:15:35 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jordi.espasa@opengea.org) Received: from mail.opengea.org (234.pool85-48-253.static.orange.es [85.48.253.234]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0554013C448 for ; Tue, 18 Dec 2007 08:15:34 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jordi.espasa@opengea.org) Received: from localhost (tartarus [127.0.0.1]) by mail.opengea.org (Opengea.org Project MailServer) with ESMTP id 32453D50038 for ; Tue, 18 Dec 2007 09:15:16 +0100 (CET) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at opengea.org Received: from mail.opengea.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (mail.opengea.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10026) with ESMTP id KVB9fcu3j0Kw for ; Tue, 18 Dec 2007 09:15:16 +0100 (CET) Received: from [192.168.0.29] (62.Red-217-126-43.staticIP.rima-tde.net [217.126.43.62]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) (Authenticated sender: jordi.espasa@opengea.org) by mail.opengea.org (Opengea.org Project MailServer) with ESMTP id 978CCD50036 for ; Tue, 18 Dec 2007 09:15:15 +0100 (CET) Message-ID: <476781A3.1040102@opengea.org> Date: Tue, 18 Dec 2007 09:15:31 +0100 From: Jordi Espasa Clofent User-Agent: Thunderbird 1.5.0.7 (X11/20061027) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org References: <47656FB7.4070807@opengea.org> <4766CF56.7030308@opengea.org> In-Reply-To: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Subject: Re: Random reboots X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 18 Dec 2007 08:15:35 -0000 > Great. No snapshots here (we use Bacula for backup data). Maybe when ZFS will be stable enough for production environment and we'll use it. We already use SMART in every server; indeed, the HDD health is controlled by daily smartmontools shell-script. > One other idea: you might configure a serial console so you can see any > messages the machine generates as it's dying. I'm thinking about building a new machine before the end of the year. A quad core machine would be nice. I'm looking at AMD Socket AM2+ and Phenom. For running FreeBSD / amd64, are there any combinations of motherboard and cpu which work better than others? Here is a list http://wiki.freebsd.org/NvidiaFeatureRequests I just wanted to ask, does anyone have time to work on that? Or is it planned for these features to be finished in the near future?
