A full FreeBSD release costs like 40$. 40$?! HOLY SHIT! Who would buy it for that much money when you can download it for free? Now you might think that giving 40$ is a great way for supporting the project. But is freebsdmall associated with the core team in any way? OK, even if it is, I think there would be more income, if there were a reasonable price. Or does mailing a 4 CD set or a DVD really cost that much money?! Either way, I think it is still more financially efficient if users download a copy and donate like 35$ via some online method. Don't give me wrong. Of course there are people without online access or CD/DVD burners, but those are rare case exceptions. Am I wrong? Is it not how this thing works? Are lots of people really buying freebsdmall products keenly/willingly every time for some reason? If enough people agree with you, the company will either change their prices, go out of business, or find some other solution. Also, in the past few months alone, we've donated over $20k USD in modern server hardware for FreeBSD development, made possible in part due to the revenue generated by the mall. The FreeBSD Mall also provides us with merchandise that we use to promote FreeBSD at trade shows that we attend at a cost of several thousand dollars per show. I think the $40 dollars for the professionally packaged 4 CD set is not only an inexpensive investment for a little piece of internet history for each FreeBSD release, but it is also a tremendous help offsetting a portion of the costs for our advocacy and hardware support efforts for the FreeBSD Project. best, -matt -- Matt Olander CTO, iXsystems - "Servers for Open Source" http://www.iXsystems.com Public Relations, The FreeBSD Project http://www.FreeBSD.org BSD on the Desktop! http://www.pcbsd.org Phone: (408)943-4100 ext. 113 Fax: (408)943-4101 From owner-freebsd-chat@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Sep 4 04:50:25 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-chat@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5A45D16A417 for ; Tue, 4 Sep 2007 04:50:25 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from freebsd@bitfreak.org) Received: from mail.twinthornes.com (mail.twinthornes.com [65.75.198.147]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 39DE213C45E for ; Tue, 4 Sep 2007 04:50:25 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from freebsd@bitfreak.org) Received: from [10.9.70.100] (pool-71-117-232-141.ptldor.fios.verizon.net [71.117.232.141]) by mail.twinthornes.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 705A1A95; Mon, 3 Sep 2007 21:40:05 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <46DCE1CC.4060901@bitfreak.org> Date: Mon, 03 Sep 2007 21:40:44 -0700 From: Darren Pilgrim User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 (Windows/20070728) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: deeptech71@gmail.com References: <46DBF48E.7030806@gmail.com> In-Reply-To: <46DBF48E.7030806@gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: freebsd-chat@freebsd.org Subject: Re: freebsdmall.com prices X-BeenThere: freebsd-chat@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Non technical items related to the community List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 04 Sep 2007 04:50:25 -0000 deeptech71@gmail.com wrote: > A full FreeBSD release costs like 40$. <...> > Who would buy it for that much money when you can download it for > free? Actually shipping is $4.95 on top of the purchase cost, IIRC. But then, you do get pressed CDs instead of sticker-labeled CDR crap like certain other software shippers. And stickers! Don't forget the stickers! I got bored one day and cut out and stuck little beastie heads on the penguin logos on my friend's business's server farm. Had I not bought all those FreeBSD CD sets over the years, I'd have run short on beastie heads and my dastardly plan would have been foiled! > Either way, I think it is still more financially efficient if users > download a copy and donate like 35$ via some online method. You mean like download the ISOs at ftp.freebsd.org, then hop over to http://www.freebsdfoundation.org/donate/ and send the Foundation your $35 via check/MO/Paypal? Hi Matt, I'm wondering how many people are behind the Mall, what the order statistics are, and how much the income is. If the Mall is just a secondary job, and you donate a considerable excess amount, then I have to respect, but also criticize that. The good thing is about *you* supporting the Project, is that *you* can chose what parts of development to encourage. If you donate raw cash, they will spend it on ice cream ;), if you donate a piece of hardware, they will utilize that thing for testing, which is good if your company relies heavily on FreeBSD driver efficiency and stability for that type of piece. However, if you really encourage advertising FreeBSD, you should make promo stuff as cheap as possible. At first I thought you were just asking a question and trying to gain insight but now I see you're just trolling. I don't really understand what you are trying to gain through this ranting. If you want to use FreeBSD, you can, and for free. Same for NetBSD, OpenBSD, various distributions of Linux...... what's the problem? You can't realistically expect to get everything for no cost. Or maybe you need clarification between the terms - Free does not necessarily mean "at no cost to you" (although as you know you can still download and use FreeBSD at virtually no cost to you....) --Mike H From owner-freebsd-chat@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Sep 5 18:21:58 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-chat@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0AB9D16A418 for ; Wed, 5 Sep 2007 18:21:58 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from deeptech71@gmail.com) Received: from nf-out-0910.google.com (nf-out-0910.google.com [64.233.182.187]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7C6DC13C45D for ; Wed, 5 Sep 2007 18:21:57 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from deeptech71@gmail.com) Received: by nf-out-0910.google.com with SMTP id k4so1765871nfd for ; Wed, 05 Sep 2007 11:21:38 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=domainkey-signature:received:received:message-id:date:from:user-agent:mime-version:to:subject:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; b=JpwYEhLusATMMak5Rk8cqmFDBnOsPA2TsEbyG31kN1VjAvYTMZgnUku8TPBqWd51SmXyanskJkYpltRIcG5pngoJF53MtqYBizrEJSmPQWfnSTJAAmsnv8SrI0agefHGraj5nUTboIuutYacywwut8Wiqxoe7bXR5Xpf7VfPTc4= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=received:message-id:date:from:user-agent:mime-version:to:subject:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; b=B8/Nuv2jYuCC+e/tUkSiu0GX8MqE36BW8dnfWag4oriDZJU5QQjF2dEICpES6WxWiXgHzcRe4SEVjMNWBd2WaUumm5LnRwsK7QJzFWjd2OXUGBJmeukOKWDxYhgajupnctQ/duwAtK4qPS4bQ0f4qByXyN6XYwbhW6+8zXKdJng= Received: by 10.86.1.1 with SMTP id 1mr5390371fga.1189016497859; Wed, 05 Sep 2007 11:21:37 -0700 (PDT) Received: from ?192.168.123.111? They supported FreeBSD and gave it marketing and a face. How? Via your purchases, back before you could so easily download it. Now, yes, prices have gone up, or at least feel that way. But even if you, as an individual feel that its worth saving 40.00 to max out your DSL for a a bit and make a few cds at home, if you use FreeBSD at your company, you should get them to subscribe to the CD's! Maybe as an individual it's not cost effective for you. But there is no reason to let your company off the hook if you can help it. The CD subscriptions are very reasonable for a company, and without the per machine requirements of other OS types. $40-100 per quarter is nothing. Most companies don't blink at a bar tab that large for a salesperson. CD subscription should be required on a moral basis if for no other reason for a company. Indeed a company that uses *BSD should subscribe to all *BSD versions to keep updated, abreast of devel, and current. Now that VMware is free I don't know why an IT dept wouldn't be constantly evaluating *BSD subscriptions. I'd already played the game on Windoze and Linux; a 3d FPS game of heavy graphics rendering and 3d sound. I was surprised of the quality of the game play on FreeBSD. Never thought it could deliver such quality. In fact the game runs through Linux kernel emulation, but there is no difference between the quality of the game play on FreeBSD and that of Linux/Windoze. FreeBSD team: Very good job! They're durable enough. I have subscriptions. Each CD set is $29.90 shipped. I consider it worthwhile because I don't have to worry about heat and light exposure with pressed CDs, so I can stuff the disc set on a shelf in a server room or keep a set in my toolkit which tends to stay in my car. I think the biggest advantage of having a cd or dvd release from bsdmall is the well designed and professional look of the packaging and disks themself. I find customers to be much more receptive when I have a pressed disk and not a cdr I printed a label on myself, or worse in a pinch a cdr with hand written label (though my hand writing is not very good). I think it is a must for working around customer machines, though cdrs are still fine for home use.
