These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. r - repocopy The resolution of the problem report is dependent on a repocopy operation within the CVS repository which is awaiting completion. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. The first one states "you cannot sell the software itself." But that is not true. From the GPL FAQ: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html Does the GPL allow me to sell copies of the program for money? Yes, the GPL allows everyone to do this. The right to sell copies is part of the definition of free software. Except in one special situation, there is no limit on what price you can charge. (The one exception is the required written offer to provide source code that must accompany binary-only release.) In "What a license cannot do" you make claims about Mattel and Cygnus that are misleading. The Mattel case didn't get anywhere -- that was back in 2000 and cphack is still freely available on the 'net. If Cygnus "[took] over development of the FSF compiler tools," I think that is a good thing because it means that a company that might have historically made more money under a proprietary business model is instead contributing to a GPL code base. No one can really "take over" a GPL'd project -- it is just a fork, and if it is a good fork it may become predominant, but that is not a "take over." In the end, you basically suggest that the sole advantage of the BSD license over the GPL is that the BSD license attracts developers who want to use a proprietary model of software development. In other words, the BSD license is best for those who would like to profit from our code without giving back any code to the developer community. What's good about that? That clearly is the core issue. Couldn't you have left off nearly everything else and just told the reader why he should want his code to be used in proprietary software projects that compete with open source projects? That way you'll pick up new categories when they are added. > http://www.freebsd.org/ports/ports-mgmt.html really does not exists! That's an interesting mystery. The ports-mgmt category is in the file in CVS, but it's not showing up on the web site. Perhaps something has happened with INDEX fetching? I wasn't able to find the actual HOWTO other than in the mailing list archives, so I figured I'd just post. I have an addendum to the Step Four restore command. A more flexible way to restore would be via network. To backup I usually do something like this (from a Windows host, which runs the software for our tape library): > "C:\Program Files\PuTTY\plink" -batch -i "%userprofile%/backup.ppk" backup@host.domain.local /usr/bin/nice /sbin/dump -0Lauf - / | gzip -c > host-root-full.dump.gz So now the dump file is on the backup hosts' HD which is also accessible via password protected HTTP. On the new system, boot from FreeBSD CD 1, setup networking (under Configure, Networking, Interfaces), partition and format your HD like you want - following the instructions in the HOWTO, then when you get to the restore command it would be something like this: # /mnt2/usr/bin/ftp -o - http://username:password@backup.domain.local/host-root-full.dump.gz | /bin/zcat | /mnt2/sbin/restore -ruvyf - Most of the documentation I've seen involves using dump/restore with a tape drive or from some sort of mount. For me and possibly others, this method is much more flexible. If you need better security, it's also possible to initiate the restore from the backup server so it doesn't have to listen to any outside requests and therefore can't be cracked as easy. Use SSH instead of HTTP, assuming your network transport is insecure. That would look something like this: =============== -The system you are restoring to should have a base install (minimal) of FreeBSD near the same version of the one you are restoring. The closer the better, since that will reduce the chance of the root fs not restoring properly since some required stuff for ssh is under both that and /usr. -Make sure you restore all other mount points before /. With recent versions (>6.1), it's best to also transfer the root dump file over to /var/tmp so you have it available for restore if sshd breaks because of the /usr restore (get errors about 'Binary file not executable'). -Make a backup of /etc/fstab if the destination FS's and device names aren't the same as the original server, then restore it before you reboot the server. For example, after restoring /var put a copy of /etc/fstab in /var/tmp, restore /, then 'cp /var/tmp/fstab /etc'. -kill non-vital services except sshd, so you don't have daemons going crazy while fs structures change out from under them. -Don't worry if you see a "cannot open /dev/tty: Device not configured" error, it's just cd complaining. -You will probably have to do a 'cd /; chflags -R noschg *' on the destination server before restoring /usr and /. -If using cygwin the command would look something like this: bash -c "zcat host-usrhome-full.dump.gz | ssh root@host.domain.local 'cd /usr/home; /sbin/restore -ruvyf -'" -If using putty/plink it would look something like this: zcat host-usrhome-full.dump.gz | "C:\Program Files\PuTTY\plink" -i "%userprofile%/backup.ppk" root@host.domain.local cd /usr/home; /sbin/restore -ruvyf - =============== From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Feb 27 01:34:15 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: doc@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7DCC016A400 for ; Tue, 27 Feb 2007 01:34:15 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from VISP@homer.isd-holland.nl) Received: from homer.isd-holland.nl (homer.isd-holland.nl [62.221.254.40]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4D55413C48E for ; Tue, 27 Feb 2007 01:34:15 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from VISP@homer.isd-holland.nl) Received: by homer.isd-holland.nl (Postfix, from userid 10000) id C0FD71DC752; Tue, 27 Feb 2007 02:04:17 +0100 (CET) To: doc@FreeBSD.org From: UK NATIONAL LOTTERY MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Message-Id: <20070227010417.C0FD71DC752@homer.isd-holland.nl> Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2007 02:04:17 +0100 (CET) Cc: Subject: CONTACT MARK ROGERS FOR YOUR WINNING X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: national_lottoo@yahoo.co.uk List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2007 01:34:15 -0000 The National Lottery PO Box 1010 Liverpool L70 1NL United Kingdom. Trying to find a good list of wireless cards with the atheros chipset, I did find this sweet site on the atheros site http://customerproducts.atheros.com/customerproducts/ResultsPageBasic.asp . It basically lets you pick different delimiters (interface, brand, protocol, etc.) to narrow down your search for the Atheros card that's right for you. I wanted to submit a suggestion to include this link in the man page instead of the one that's there now, and I didn't know how to go about doing this. The FreeBSD documentation site that I saw only addressed submitting documentation, not editing it.
