I'm not sure mirrors would be happy with these requirements, don't forget that changing something to the build of the www/ or doc/ sets has consequence outside of the FreeBSD.org network. On another hand, there are already some equivalent systems to graphviz in the current docproj port (I mean some "txt to graph" systems: pstricks, groff, etc.), so why not using what is already available instead of adding a new application? Regarding the graphs, I can understand the importance of the project organization graph, but for the mentor-mentee one I doubt a lot of people will really care of it. The organization graph can be static, we don't need to say who compose the teams since it's already detailed elsewhere. -- Marc From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Apr 23 11:06:17 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: doc@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B113F16A47E for ; Mon, 23 Apr 2007 11:06:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [69.147.83.40]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A032E13C465 for ; Mon, 23 Apr 2007 11:06:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (linimon@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id l3NB6HpW092203 for ; Mon, 23 Apr 2007 11:06:17 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from linimon@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id l3NB6GVa092199 for DOC; Mon, 23 Apr 2007 11:06:16 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Date: Mon, 23 Apr 2007 11:06:16 GMT Message-Id: <200704231106.l3NB6GVa092199@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: linimon set sender to owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: FreeBSD doc list Cc: Subject: Current unassigned doc problem reports X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 23 Apr 2007 11:06:17 -0000 Current FreeBSD problem reports The following is a listing of current problems submitted by FreeBSD users. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. r - repocopy The resolution of the problem report is dependent on a repocopy operation within the CVS repository which is awaiting completion. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. There might be some value in creating a graphviz-lite slave port to remove the XPM and TK support, but otherwise it isn't all that bad. At least at this point this argument may have more merit. Hmm, I agree with not making the port heavier. The docproj's TeX dependency is one of what we want to remove, and keeping it small is always our goal. graphviz is a powerful tool, but it needs X IIRC (docproj has a no X11 option). How about putting statically-generated graphs or pic graphs like ones in doc/share/images/articles/releng for the moment? The mentor-mentee graph is not so complex, so it is not impossible, I think. Adding the graphs looks great to me, but it does not always require the graphviz. -- | Hiroki SATO ----Security_Multipart(Tue_Apr_24_10_18_42_2007_009)-- Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.7 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQBGLVryTyzT2CeTzy0RAjA7AKDK/u0PxO5cTA6nh/JxFpO0IIE9LQCgigSf dBbUlMjT81BZxIp7JVhAnsU= =oNjA -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ----Security_Multipart(Tue_Apr_24_10_18_42_2007_009)---- From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Apr 24 05:44:21 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: doc@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4C35816A400; Tue, 24 Apr 2007 05:44:21 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from marc@blackend.org) Received: from abigail.blackend.org (ns0.blackend.org [82.227.222.164]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9AB3113C448; Tue, 24 Apr 2007 05:44:19 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from marc@blackend.org) Received: from abigail.blackend.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by abigail.blackend.org (8.13.4/8.13.3) with ESMTP id l3O5iIYg022557; Tue, 24 Apr 2007 07:44:18 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from marc@abigail.blackend.org) Received: (from marc@localhost) by abigail.blackend.org (8.13.4/8.13.3/Submit) id l3O5iIZ9022556; Tue, 24 Apr 2007 07:44:18 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from marc) Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2007 07:44:18 +0200 From: Marc Fonvieille To: Hiroki Sato Message-ID: <20070424054417.GA22361@abigail.blackend.org> Mail-Followup-To: Hiroki Sato , gabor@FreeBSD.org, brooks@FreeBSD.org, webmaster@FreeBSD.org, doceng@FreeBSD.org, doc@FreeBSD.org, www@FreeBSD.org References: <20070422103926.GA976@gothic.blackend.org> <20070423174421.GE40814@lor.one-eyed-alien.net> <20070423183352.GB1060@gothic.blackend.org> <20070424.101842.21878413.hrs@allbsd.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="yrj/dFKFPuw6o+aM" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20070424.101842.21878413.hrs@allbsd.org> X-Useless-Header: blackend.org X-Operating-System: FreeBSD 4.11-STABLE User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.9i Cc: webmaster@FreeBSD.org, brooks@FreeBSD.org, doc@FreeBSD.org, doceng@FreeBSD.org, www@FreeBSD.org, gabor@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: RFC: putting our graphs onto the website X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2007 05:44:21 -0000 --yrj/dFKFPuw6o+aM Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On Tue, Apr 24, 2007 at 10:18:42AM +0900, Hiroki Sato wrote: > Marc Fonvieille wrote > in <20070423183352.GB1060@gothic.blackend.org>: >=20 > bl> On Mon, Apr 23, 2007 at 12:44:21PM -0500, Brooks Davis wrote: > bl> > > bl> > Given that docproj includes TeX it's dependency list, complaining a= bout > bl> > the weight of graphviz seems silly. > bl> > bl> The fact something is already heavy is not a reason to make it heavie= r. > bl> It's like telling that since the water is polluted we can add more > bl> pollution. >=20 > Hmm, I agree with not making the port heavier. FWIW, it defaults to depending on X, but does not actually require it. It looks like adding a no X11 option wouldn't be too hard. Already today you cannot build complete doc/ with only textproc/docproj installed (the Palm book tools are not installed). One could just only build the graph's on www.freebsd.org, and not by default - see www/en/ports/Makefile for example on how we already do that. WRT. the size of the graph I agree that is not optimal, but by using a smaller font it should be possible to handle that. While the mentor graph's aren't useful per say, I think they are kind of neat :-). -- Simon L. You are of course correct, thanks for bringing this to our attention. I've deleted all the references to the 6bone in both doc/ and www/, and also updated the 3ffe:* addresses to use the prefix define for documentation in RFC 3849. However I did not go through all the docs looking for other possible IPv6 addresses that might need to be converted. Cutting out the 6bone stuff in 29.10.3 shortened the section considerably, but most of the stuff that was cut was just a description of how to do by hand what the text in 29.10.5 describes how to automate with rc.conf, so it seems like a good trade. If someone wants to go back in and restore 29.10.3 with a real example, I won't object. hth, Doug -- This .signature sanitized for your protection From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Apr 27 09:49:04 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CCEAA16A404 for ; Fri, 27 Apr 2007 09:49:04 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from ceri@submonkey.net) Received: from shrike.submonkey.net (cpc3-cdif2-0-0-cust64.cdif.cable.ntl.com [81.106.128.65]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7C98B13C455 for ; Fri, 27 Apr 2007 09:49:04 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from ceri@submonkey.net) Received: from ceri by shrike.submonkey.net with local (Exim 4.66 (FreeBSD)) (envelope-from ) id 1HhMba-000KNS-CQ; Fri, 27 Apr 2007 10:19:06 +0100 Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2007 10:19:06 +0100 From: Ceri Davies To: "Simon L. I found it to be a very informative document and a great introduction to the OS. I do however have a small suggestion regarding section 4.4, Using the Packages System (URL below). http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/packages-using.html As this documentation is likely to be ready by new users, it may be useful to point out that in csh (being the default shell for root) one must either run "rehash" or log out and back in before the commands related to the package are available.
