The above message says nothing about the example being broken under default circumstances; that is, letting sysinstall create the partitions automatically results in /home being a symlink to /usr/home. Based upon the text you quoted above a user knows that putting jails anywhere is acceptable but they don't know that putting them anywhere with a symlink in the path is not. All I'm suggesting is that /home be changed to /usr/home in the examples. -- WXS From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jun 25 10:47:45 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 08E0116A421 for ; Mon, 25 Jun 2007 10:47:45 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from almarrie@gmail.com) Received: from an-out-0708.google.com (an-out-0708.google.com [209.85.132.248]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4D60213C447 for ; Mon, 25 Jun 2007 10:47:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from almarrie@gmail.com) Received: by an-out-0708.google.com with SMTP id c14so349418anc for ; Mon, 25 Jun 2007 03:47:43 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=domainkey-signature:received:received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition; b=Py49DN5X6qahlCxIdslct/vWGqyZ9RvtaLGKZ/7H1N0v5kjgODFvdI5lLjpDQLximUnGFWQF4tQMEF72Mm4sbUue9fsuV6qH0kgLonLxz5oRCuMANImgI7RzFMF94RTEtCE4PSZM+D3jj0IEfJPPzr+uINBNN2YpeqlblIgO1Bo= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition; b=oRTzMA9DNrSIkTwtXQ8tmxC3a98yQJEjxT6IAl0Pr+5zAPBTa+9Cuash013fWFLaqDUa3VzsVW2R/6IXHb3j3u8+ysDoJRrCR/jG8EYhRiGkel5IzAQHyf5NjUsjbZguPUm8rH68uTW4RATawYGbzu5JUv+yWorgVfK5VgRxZrg= Received: by 10.100.106.5 with SMTP id e5mr3001373anc.1182766949858; Mon, 25 Jun 2007 03:22:29 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.100.9.14 with HTTP; Mon, 25 Jun 2007 03:22:29 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <499c70c0706250322j3ac73760m38dbbb10bd816bb5@mail.gmail.com> Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2007 13:22:29 +0300 From: "Abdullah Ibn Hamad Al-Marri" To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Subject: Document old docs - http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/5-roadmap/index.html X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2007 10:47:45 -0000 Hello, Just wondering if FreeBSD still needs the roadmap pages for FeeBSD 5.x http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/5-roadmap/index.html -- Regards, -Abdullah Ibn Hamad Al-Marri Arab Portal http://www.WeArab.Net/ From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jun 25 11:06:17 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: doc@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EB8DA16A400 for ; Mon, 25 Jun 2007 11:06:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [69.147.83.40]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D0EEB13C458 for ; Mon, 25 Jun 2007 11:06:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id l5PB6Hg2097682 for ; Mon, 25 Jun 2007 11:06:17 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id l5PB6G8J097675 for DOC; Mon, 25 Jun 2007 11:06:16 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2007 11:06:16 GMT Message-Id: <200706251106.l5PB6G8J097675@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: gnats set sender to owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: FreeBSD doc list Cc: Subject: Current unassigned doc problem reports X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2007 11:06:18 -0000 Current FreeBSD problem reports The following is a listing of current problems submitted by FreeBSD users. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. r - repocopy The resolution of the problem report is dependent on a repocopy operation within the CVS repository which is awaiting completion. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. As part of the documentation, we've made a technical report available that outlines what we learnt whilst transitioning from noob kernel hackers to guys that have a (partial) clue. The report is certainly a useful reference for us and people working at our research centre. We hope it will also be a useful reference for the community to point people at who are new to kernel hacking. The report's title is "An Introduction to FreeBSD 6 Kernel Hacking" and has been released as Centre for Advanced Internet Architectures Technical Report 070622A. The reason for this behavior is located in Rev. 1.105 of doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/Makefile. This change has to be applied to ALL localized versions of the handbook before the build of our docs will be successful. Unfortunately I don't have my FreeBSD system available at the moment so I cannot commit the necessary patches. But maybe one of the other doc committers could fix this? Thanks. -- jkois From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jun 27 15:58:18 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4611916A400 for ; Wed, 27 Jun 2007 15:58:18 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from chinsan.tw@gmail.com) Received: from an-out-0708.google.com (an-out-0708.google.com [209.85.132.244]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0539E13C44C for ; Wed, 27 Jun 2007 15:58:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from chinsan.tw@gmail.com) Received: by an-out-0708.google.com with SMTP id c14so49408anc for ; Wed, 27 Jun 2007 08:58:17 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=domainkey-signature:received:received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:cc:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition:references; b=OB/eT7Iz/P+jc0zB+fjcboJtQqBQlBTReGYGSIwaEcdWHOX6hWcxhTy4rP8Sps1aE67Eb+xP2W5Tgu+g8M5FdZCO8zGIc+hQnfpODbVZteoBS3wV9w5vexjgk+YVSEGIQzIzAj5L6e0RWFsmBJpBrBoJsBHgRqxxjHNMTcCW+bE= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:cc:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition:references; b=Nsd8G/oJjxLFwTpp4CiOQIbM/JwPvXc/V+PeaQfxz+zUtDo46e2ww2KvGguRIF1xcGrv0vcfmXGtHfisRMPixXTblmpNmavMMIuxD9rHJ/p6dBtV780TXD2flZbIpb3Z6GRnbieZBnDIUmQaasTLezlc/ZnKktG7dZKPaaqnr9Y= Received: by 10.100.120.5 with SMTP id s5mr403142anc.1182959897142; Wed, 27 Jun 2007 08:58:17 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.100.119.4 with HTTP; Wed, 27 Jun 2007 08:58:17 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <1f27304c0706270858p71faa632m5cdbe0f85b894cd9@mail.gmail.com> Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2007 23:58:17 +0800 From: chinsan To: jkois@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: <20070627172519.erhm98bm00g8w4co@login-8.hoststar.at> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline References: <200706271454.l5REsEjf020735@www.freebsd.org> <20070627172519.erhm98bm00g8w4co@login-8.hoststar.at> Cc: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org, World Wide Web Owner Subject: Re: FreeBSD web build failed on www.freebsd.org X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2007 15:58:18 -0000 On 6/27/07, Johann Kois wrote: > On 27.06.2007 World Wide Web Owner wrote: > > ... > > ===> ../es/doc/books/handbook > > make: don't know how to make > > /w/www/build/doc/es_ES.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/../../../share/images/books/handbook/install/desktop.scr. > > Stop > > seems like the build will fail with EVERY localized version of the handbook. > The reason for this behavior is located in Rev. 1.105 of > doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/Makefile. A sample -XF86Config file is supplied with XFree86; it is configured for a standard -VGA card and monitor with 640x480 resolution. This program will ask for a -pathname when it is ready to write the file. - -You can either take the sample XF86Config as a base and edit it for your -configuration, or let this program produce a base XF86Config file for your -configuration and fine-tune it. - -Before continuing with this program, make sure you know what video card -you have, and preferably also the chipset it uses and the amount of video -memory on your video card. SuperProbe may be able to help with this. - -Press enter to continue, or ctrl-c to abort. - - Pressing Enter will start the mouse - configuration. Be sure to follow the instructions and use - Mouse Systems as the mouse protocol and - /dev/sysmouse as the mouse port even if - using a PS/2 mouse is shown as an illustration. - - First specify a mouse protocol type. There are -two main varieties of the latter type: mice with a switch to select the -protocol, and mice that default to 1 and require a button to be held at -boot-time to select protocol 2. Some mice can be convinced to do 2 by sending -a special sequence to the serial port (see the ClearDTR/ClearRTS options). - -Enter a protocol number: 2 - -You have selected a Mouse Systems protocol mouse. At this point you can -choose to make a selection out of a database of video card definitions. -Because there can be variation in Ramdacs and clock generators even -between cards of the same model, it is not sensible to blindly copy -the settings (e.g. a Device section). For this reason, after you make a -selection, you will still be asked about the components of the card, with -the settings from the chosen database entry presented as a strong hint. - -The database entries include information about the chipset, what driver to -run, the Ramdac and ClockChip, and comments that will be included in the -Device section. However, a lot of definitions only hint about what driver -to run (based on the chipset the card uses) and are untested. - -If you can't find your card in the database, there's nothing to worry about. -You should only choose a database entry that is exactly the same model as -your card; choosing one that looks similar is just a bad idea (e.g. a -GemStone Snail 64 may be as different from a GemStone Snail 64+ in terms of -hardware as can be). - -Do you want to look at the card database? y - - - -288 Matrox Millennium G200 8MB mgag200 -289 Matrox Millennium G200 SD 16MB mgag200 -290 Matrox Millennium G200 SD 4MB mgag200 -291 Matrox Millennium G200 SD 8MB mgag200 -292 Matrox Millennium G400 mgag400 -293 Matrox Millennium II 16MB mga2164w -294 Matrox Millennium II 4MB mga2164w -295 Matrox Millennium II 8MB mga2164w -296 Matrox Mystique mga1064sg -297 Matrox Mystique G200 16MB mgag200 -298 Matrox Mystique G200 4MB mgag200 -299 Matrox Mystique G200 8MB mgag200 -300 Matrox Productiva G100 4MB mgag100 -301 Matrox Productiva G100 8MB mgag100 -302 MediaGX mediagx -303 MediaVision Proaxcel 128 ET6000 -304 Mirage Z-128 ET6000 -305 Miro CRYSTAL VRX Verite 1000 - -Enter a number to choose the corresponding card definition. -Press enter for the next page, q to continue configuration. - -288 - -Your selected card definition: - -Identifier: Matrox Millennium G200 8MB -Chipset: mgag200 -Driver: mga -Do NOT probe clocks or use any Clocks line. - -Press enter to continue, or ctrl-c to abort. - - - -Now you must give information about your video card. I don't remember seeing one, but I started with 5.2, and have never had much trouble installing. -Ben Kaduk From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jun 29 19:01:52 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 813D216A469 for ; Fri, 29 Jun 2007 19:01:52 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from minimarmot@gmail.com) Received: from ik-out-1112.google.com (ik-out-1112.google.com [66.249.90.178]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 16E9013C4BE for ; Fri, 29 Jun 2007 19:01:51 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from minimarmot@gmail.com) Received: by ik-out-1112.google.com with SMTP id c21so965371ika for ; Fri, 29 Jun 2007 12:01:50 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=domainkey-signature:received:received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:cc:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition:references; b=DbOJeE+KzEyw/xpJxhMwT/kYDX8qyniCt+0iTPCXe4Jw1nuPcDeHjVZS8ZSHyl2yDujuyN6tdDctTWFtZH/efZfBQzeWYldNRDhoVHv1DkF+15pqvZnUf7fPif1LzTJwu4GCy1Y5RmIUvkFtNY4546Wfibw3ovp+7zXzFCuyrO0= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:cc:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition:references; b=A45wiwx1hfVr+KqbOpLIGcSA4ybEeHAUHvqxEkFTJEK62eUfzHUjxRZQv/dvCiHDvRMKsjp1d2YFzNaIiL2oHcvNVi1BREcKE8q11+8MmZL1OkUXgKMCGK2CLQWz9YGZfceDSyxCphh7O7QkeHksqTCGEEug0xuGjBP9XnXXcqI= Received: by 10.142.154.20 with SMTP id b20mr200654wfe.1183143709481; Fri, 29 Jun 2007 12:01:49 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.143.1.8 with HTTP; Fri, 29 Jun 2007 12:01:49 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <47d0403c0706291201p51e60132g3ddd7de2080941b8@mail.gmail.com> Date: Fri, 29 Jun 2007 14:01:49 -0500 From: "Ben Kaduk" To: "Doug Barton" In-Reply-To: <46855640.9000009@FreeBSD.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline References: <47d0403c0706291117i5efad22es35debfa001604aac@mail.gmail.com> <46855640.9000009@FreeBSD.org> Cc: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: nit in sysinstall menu X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 29 Jun 2007 19:01:52 -0000 [remove ``phosphor'' from ``phosphor burn-in'' in sysinstall] On 6/29/07, Doug Barton wrote: > This is a good sort of thing to submit in a PR so that it doesn't get > lost. > > Thanks, > > Doug > > -- > > This .signature sanitized for your protection > Okay; I'll be submitting a lot of PR's in the next couple of days, then, mostly for small changes like this. -Ben Kaduk From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jun 29 19:24:51 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BDA7016A421 for ; Fri, 29 Jun 2007 19:24:51 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from dougb@FreeBSD.org) Received: from mail2.fluidhosting.com (mx21.fluidhosting.com [204.14.89.4]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 85E4C13C447 for ; Fri, 29 Jun 2007 19:24:51 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from dougb@FreeBSD.org) Received: (qmail 28574 invoked by uid 399); 29 Jun 2007 18:58:09 -0000 Received: from localhost (HELO ?192.168.0.7?) We've got a sentence in the installation chapter of the handbook that claims that a regular FreeBSD install will put about 40 MB of data on the root partition. I find it likely that this is no longer true on a modern system, since my (debug) kernel is 88 MB, but I don't have a box handy on which I can do a quick install. http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/install-steps.html is the page in question. However, in this table, the ``b'' partition is the only one which has a multi-paragraph description.
