My original email bounced after several days (a problem on our end) so I assume you did not get it. I am using FreeBSD 6.2 (under VMware Workstation 6.0). The Eclipse 3.3 build appears to need two JVMs, 1.6 and 1.5. I successfully built a 1.6 JVM first using the instructions provided in /usr/ports/java/jdk16 (the specific version is jdk-1.6.0.1p1_5). The 1.5 JVM I am using is the one installed as part of the Eclipse build, namely diablo-jdk-1.5.0.07.01. The build completes successfully but plug-ins do not work as expected. I cannot connect to an update site directly, instead I have to download the zip file and install the plug-in from that. The only other problem I've seen is the Subclipse plug-in doesn't appear to work after it is installed. It runs but when I try to point it to a repository it says it can't find a repository at the indicated URL. The same URL works fine in Eclipse 3.3 under CentOS (Linux). -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/Eclipse-3.3-plug-ins-not-working-tf4604157.html#a13212926 Sent from the freebsd-eclipse mailing list archive at Nabble.com. I've been using it for a couple of days now and so far it's certainly as groovy as the 3.3 that we have in eclipse-devel. What do you think about kicking eclipse-devel up to 3.3.1? From what I can see, 3.3.1 is the current release on eclipse.org and it sure would be nice to be even that little bit closer to getting in step with their releases. As Ken mentioned, 3.3.1 doesn't need launchersrc.zip, which I'm sure you'll agree is a good step forward. Ken has identified a couple of minor issues with it, but as it turns out, they all appear to be in the 3.3 build too. I know 3.3 only just made it into cvs and it does seem a shame to stomp if so swiftly, but I think 3.3.1 is more desirable candidate for eventual merge into java/eclipse. OT: Nice switcheroo on the Makefile for 3.3... works like a charm! Let me know your thoughts, Mike. I kept trying to catch you on IRC, but kept missing you it would seem. Which updates are you apply and from which sites? I'll give it a try and see if I can replicate it. I've got a handful of plugins which I'm running nightly builds of, which are quite happy so far, so I'd be interested to see which ones are upsetting your install. Have you given Ken's 3.3.1 a try? For the platforms were JDK 1.6 support is not yet available e.g linux-gtk-s390, linux-gtk-s390x the Eclipse SDK can be built with JDK 1.5 in place JDK 1.6. To do that, please follow the following steps: * Edit the file build.xml: replacing the tags with and with * Remove code which compile and package the plugins that require JDK 1.6 currently: org.eclipse.jdt.compiler.tool, org.eclipse.jdt.compiler.apt and org.eclipse.jdt.apt.pluggable.core from the files features/org.eclipse.jdt/feature.xml and features/org.eclipse.jdt/feature.xml. UNQUOTE I am not sure if we pursue compilation with jdk15 from the following three points. a) jdk16 is available on FreeBSD (incl. -current) b) eclipse eliminated java5home argument in build script with 3.3.0 which disabled jdk selection. c) There are binary incompatibility between jdk15 and jdk16. jdk15 compiled eclipse-europe may cause problems with plugins compiled with jdk16. (jdk16 compiled one cannot run with jdk15, but the other way is OK). If the instruction tells all, addition of jdk15 compilation will be; a) add 'java5home' argument to build script (back to 3.2.2) b) rewrite two build.xml(build.xml and features/org.eclipse.jdt/features.xml) so that they conditionally branch by java5home/JAVA_HOME. Ant is not my good friend yet, and I am not sure if it is easy or not. As I compiled Eclipse with the 1.6 JDK anyway I did not do any of the other modifications and it worked for me. The reason for this is that I am working on a Eclipse RCP application that has to be Java 1.5 compatible (that particular application actually does not even compile cleanly with a 1.6 JDK but needs Eclipse 3.3 (and as I am not the only developer I can't fix that)). Seemingly the "official" pre-compiled versions from eclipse.org (for Linux or Windows) have a similar change applied as you can run them using a 1.5 JDK without any problems. So personally I would prefer to have this integrated into the port. One of the 3.3.0 port version we had built and ran quite happily with jdk1.5, but we've not seen the same success with 3.3.1 so far. I may have a poke at it this weekend and see what we can wrangle. For now the eclipse-devel port is tied to jdk1.6 and the upcoming 3.3.1 version will most likely be also, but we'll see what we can do to get 1.5 support in there in the near future. Thanks again for sharing the specific situation. Cheers, Mike. Thanks, I really appreciate your efforts. Without them I would probably need to boot into Windows (or install Linux) to use Eclipse. What actually puzzles me a bit is the fact that although according to the official build instructions JDK 1.6 is required (and the build.xml uses 1.6 as target version) the builds from eclipse.org run happily with Java 1.5 (or even on Java 1.4 according to http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/moreinfo/jre.php ). So obviously the guys at eclipse.org seem to use their own modified build process... Once something workable comes together, it will most likely be posted here before it hits ports. It is a bit puzzling how eclipse's builds to run across jdk versions... perhaps one of the guru's will come up with something genius, but it's beyond me. ;-) instructions.html makes it seem like an elementary process to build with 1.5, but I think it might be a bit outdated as there are a few other areas which require patches for it to work. Keep an eye on the list for progress. :-D Cheers, Mike. However, I have not run them as I am using eclipse-europa itself for eclipse porting which I do not want to disturb. Would you please try if it works for you? It is in http://www.tydfam.jp/eclipse-europa-331.tgz as usual. One need to mention. You need ant-contrib (http://ant-contrib.sourceforge.net) as I used for conditional branch for jdk15 and jdk16. Please download it defreeze and put ant-contrib-1.0b3.jar into /usr/local/share/java/apache-ant/lib. My ant knowledge is bad and I needed it to make it happen quickly. Sorry for your incovenience.
